Feminist groups plan a protest Tuesday to argue the age should be set at 15. Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet says 13 “is worth considering.”

The age is just one piece of an upcoming bill on sexual violence and harassment.

The documentary “Mosquito” (8 p.m., Discovery) just might give you nightmares. Narrated by Jeremy Renner, it ticks off gruesome statistics about the little stingers and their role in epidemics that have killed millions and infected billions. Some contend that half the people who have ever lived have died from a mosquito-borne illness.

Diseases including zika, malaria, West Nile virus, yellow fever, chikungunya and dengue have been around killing people for many years. In the 21st century, warmer temperatures and ubiquitous air travel have enabled these Africa-based diseases to move to Europe and North America, where hundreds of millions of people have little or no immunities to tropical viruses.

Made with the cooperation of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and featuring interviews with Bill Gates, “Mosquito” is a curiously beautiful film, filled with gorgeous close-ups of blood-sucking parasites as well as their breeding grounds.

Graphics inform us of the unique properties that make mosquitos ideal for transmitting viruses. In the end, it all comes down to saliva. In addition to literally “sawing” their way into your skin and drinking your blood, mosquitos use their own spit as an anti-coagulant, and that’s what spreads disease, one bite at a time.

Size-wise, it’s difficult to think of anything less significant than mosquito spit. But the potential for mosquitos spreading pandemics has gotten the world health community’s attention. Bill Gates is a tad rattled by the prospect. Perhaps that’s a concern we all should share.

Fetal Onanism: A Surprising Scientific Debate




The medical journal Prenatal Diagnosis recently played host to a vigorous debate over whether a male fetus was spotted engaging in masturbation on ultrasound.

This poor kid is caught up in the porn industry at only 32 weeks of age!





The alleged case of antenatal autoeroticism was reported by Spanish gynecologists Vanesa Rodríguez Fernández and Carlos López Ramón y Cajal in September last year. Their paper was called In utero gratification behaviour in male fetus. Here’s the ultrasonic evidence of the act:



Rodríguez Fernández and López Ramón y Cajal wrote that “This is a very clear sexual behavior ‘in utero’ in the 32nd week of gestation”, speculating that the fetus may have been comforting himself by the behaviour.

However, not everyone was convinced by these claims. In March 2017, Prenatal Diagnosis published a rather scathing ‘Comment’ on Rodríguez Fernández and López Ramón y Cajal’s paper. The author of the critique was Israeli ultrasound expert Israel Meizner, and he pulled no punches:

Looking at Figure 1 presented in the letter, one would have to conclude that the authors have made one huge error in the interpretation of the pictures presented. Picture no. 1 in Figure 1 represents a grasped normal hand with five fingers. What the authors mark as foreskin is the normal index finger.

In picture no. 2 in Figure 1, one can see the flexed hand with five fingers. What the authors mark as meatus is the flexed index finger, a bit drawn backwards.

The normal penis and scrotum are clearly visible in this picture, appearing medially to the clenched hand. I have indicated real penile tip and scrotum on a photocopy of picture 2, enclosed herewith.

Meizner included a (rather grainy) figure with what he says is the “Real Penis” helpfully labelled in yellow – and it’s not in the fetus’s hand:



López Ramón y Cajal and Rodríguez Fernández didn’t take this criticism of their ultrasound interpretation skills lying down, however. In their Response to Meizner’s criticism, they indignently deny having made any anatomical errors:

We do not agree with your analysis; the image is a snapshot of an exploration that was performed over a period of 30 min. Typically, I work using two ultrasound machines and seven transducers (three-dimensional mechanical and electronic transducers).
The behavior reported in our study was observed and confirmed by several doctors over a period of time… I would be happy for you to visit my hospital and ultrasound lab to witness this.

According to López Ramón y Cajal and Rodríguez Fernández, it was in fact Meizner who made an anatomical blooper. What Meizner called the “Real Penis” was actually the umbilical cord, they say. They also point out that it was Meizner himself who published the first ever report on pre-natal self-pleasure, in 1987.

So who is right in this dispute? I’m not sure, but what does seem certain is that the fetal masturbation controversy ranks among such great scientific debates of the past as Huxley-Wilberforce, Bohr-Einstein, and Gould-Dawkins.

It’s also fair to say that life is never dull for 32-week old fetuses these days. If researchers aren’t peeping at their private moments, they’re shining lasers at them.

I guess the second label should be In vitro, no one can hear you scream - in ecstasy.

Babies From Skin Cells? Prospect Is Unsettling to Some Experts - The Old Gray Whore 

Nearly 40 years after the world was jolted by the birth of the first test-tube baby, a new revolution in reproductive technology is on the horizon — and it promises to be far more controversial than in vitro fertilization ever was.

Within a decade or two, researchers say, scientists will likely be able to create a baby from human skin cells that have been coaxed to grow into eggs and sperm and used to create embryos to implant in a womb.

The process, in vitro gametogenesis, or I.V.G., so far has been used only in mice. But stem cell biologists say it is only a matter of time before it could be used in human reproduction — opening up mind-boggling possibilities.

With I.V.G., two men could have a baby that was biologically related to both of them, by using skin cells from one to make an egg that would be fertilized by sperm from the other. Women with fertility problems could have eggs made from their skin cells, rather than go through the lengthy and expensive process of stimulating their ovaries to retrieve their eggs.

“It gives me an unsettled feeling because we don’t know what this could lead to,” said Paul Knoepfler, a stem cell researcher at the University of California, Davis. “You can imagine one man providing both the eggs and the sperm, almost like cloning himself. You can imagine that eggs becoming so easily available would lead to designer babies.”

Some scientists even talk about what they call the “Brad Pitt scenario” when someone retrieves a celebrity’s skin cells from a hotel bed or bathtub. Or a baby might have what one law professor called “multiplex” parents.

“There are groups out there that want to reproduce among themselves,” said Sonia Suter, a George Washington University law professor who began writing about I.V.G. even before it had been achieved in mice. “You could have two pairs who would each create an embryo, and then take an egg from one embryo and sperm from the other, and create a baby with four parents.”

Three prominent academics in medicine and law sounded an alarm about the possible consequences in a paper published this year.

“I.V.G. may raise the specter of ‘embryo farming’ on a scale currently unimagined, which might exacerbate concerns about the devaluation of human life,” Dr. Eli Y. Adashi, a medical science professor at Brown; I. Glenn Cohen, a Harvard Law School professor; and Dr. George Q. Daley, dean of Harvard Medical School, wrote in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Still, how soon I.V.G. might become a reality in human reproduction is open to debate.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it was five years, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was 25 years,” said Jeanne Loring, a researcher at the Scripps Research Institute, who, with the San Diego Zoo, hopes to use I.V.G. to increase the population of the nearly extinct northern white rhino.

Dr. Loring said that when she discussed I.V.G. with colleagues who initially said it would never be used with humans, their skepticism often melted away as the talk continued. But not everyone is convinced that I.V.G. will ever become a regularly used process in human reproduction — even if the ethical issues are resolved.

“People are a lot more complicated than mice,” said Susan Solomon, chief executive of the New York Stem Cell Foundation. “And we’ve often seen that the closer you get to something, the more obstacles you discover.”

I.V.G. is not the first reproductive technology to challenge the basic paradigm of baby-making. Back when in vitro fertilization was beginning, many people were horrified by the idea of creating babies outside the human body. And yet, I.V.F. and related procedures have become so commonplace that they now account for about 70,000, or almost 2 percent, of the babies born in the United States each year. According to the latest estimate, there have been more than 6.5 million babies born worldwide through I.V.F. and related technologies.

Of course, even I.V.F. is not universally accepted. The Catholic Church remains firm in its opposition to in vitro fertilization, in part because it so often leads to the creation of extra embryos that are frozen or discarded.

I.V.G. requires layers of complicated bioengineering. Scientists must first take adult skin cells — other cells would work as well or better, but skin cells are the easiest to get — and reprogram them to become embryonic stem cells capable of growing into different kinds of cells.

Then, the same kind of signaling factors that occur in nature are used to guide those stem cells to become eggs or sperm. (Cells taken from women could be made to produce sperm, the researchers say, but the sperm, lacking a Y chromosome, would produce only female babies.)

Last year, researchers in Japan, led by Katsuhiko Hayashi, used I.V.G. to make viable eggs from the skin cells of adult female mice, and produced embryos that were implanted into female mice, who then gave birth to healthy babies.

The process strikes some people as inherently repugnant.

“There is a yuck factor here,” said Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University. “It strikes many people as intuitively yucky to have three parents, or to make a baby without starting from an egg and sperm. But then again, it used to be that people thought blood transfusions were yucky, or putting pig valves in human hearts.”

Brilliant, Art! Some people used to think gassing Jews or shooting Armenians or eating babies was not only "yucky", but morally abhorrent AND practically unimaginable. Fuckin' dumbass.

Whatever the social norms, there are questions about the wisdom of tinkering with basic biological processes. And there is general agreement that reproductive technology is progressing faster than consideration of the legal and ethical questions it raises.

“We have come to realize that scientific developments are outpacing our ability to think them through,” Dr. Adashi said. “It’s a challenge for which we are not fully prepared. It would be good to be having the conversation before we are actually confronting the challenges.”

Some bioethicists take the position that while research on early stages of human life can deepen the understanding of our genetic code, tinkering with biological mechanisms that have evolved over thousands of years is inherently wrongheaded.

“Basic research is paramount, but it’s not clear that we need new methods for creating viable embryos,” said David Lemberg, a bioethicist at National University in California. “Attempting to apply what we’ve learned to create a human zygote is dangerous, because we have no idea what we’re doing, we have no idea what the outcomes are going to be.”

WASHINGTON — Researchers are creating an artificial womb to improve care for extremely premature babies — and remarkable animal testing suggests the first-of-its-kind watery incubation so closely mimics mom that it just might work.

Today, premature infants weighing as little as a pound are hooked to ventilators and other machines inside incubators. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is aiming for a gentler solution, to give the tiniest preemies a few more weeks cocooned in a womb-like environment — treating them more like fetuses than newborns in hopes of giving them a better chance of healthy survival.

The researchers created a fluid-filled transparent container to simulate how fetuses float in amniotic fluid inside mom’s uterus, and attached it to a mechanical placenta that keeps blood oxygenated.

In early-stage animal testing, extremely premature lambs appeared to grown normally inside the system for three to four weeks, the team reported Tuesday.

“We start with a tiny fetus that is pretty inert and spends most of its time sleeping. Over four weeks we see that fetus open its eyes, grow wool, breathe, swim,” said Dr. Emily Partridge, a CHOP research fellow and first author of the study published in Nature Communications.

“It’s hard to describe actually how uniquely awe-inspiring it is to see,” she added in an interview.

Human testing still is three to five years away, although the team already is in discussions with the Food and Drug Administration.

“We’re trying to extend normal gestation,” said Dr. Alan Flake, a fetal surgeon at CHOP who is leading the project and considers it a temporary bridge between the mother’s womb and the outside world.

Increasingly hospitals attempt to save the most critically premature infants, those born before 26 weeks gestation and even those right at the limits of viability — 22 to 23 weeks. Extreme prematurity is a leading cause of infant mortality, and those who do survive frequently have serious disabilities such as cerebral palsy.

The idea of treating preemies in fluid-filled incubators may sound strange, but physiologically it makes sense, said Dr. Catherine Spong, a fetal medicine specialist at the National Institutes of Health.

“This is really an innovative, promising first step,” said Spong, who wasn’t involved with the research.

One of the biggest risks for very young preemies is that their lungs aren’t ready to breathe air, she explained. Before birth, amniotic fluid flows into their lungs, bringing growth factors crucial for proper lung development. When they’re born too soon, doctors hook preemies to ventilators to keep them alive but risking lifelong lung damage.

Flake’s goal is for the womb-like system to support the very youngest preemies just for a few weeks, until their organs are mature enough to better handle regular hospital care like older preemies who have less risk of death or disability.

The device is simpler than previous attempts at creating an artificial womb, which haven’t yet panned out.

How the “Biobag” system works:

—The premature lambs were delivered by C-section and immediately placed into a temperature-controlled bag filled with a substitute for amniotic fluid that they swallow and take into their lungs.

“We make gallons of this stuff a day,” said fetal physiologist Marcus Davey. It’s currently an electrolyte solution; he’s working to add other factors to make it more like real amniotic fluid.

—Then the researchers attached the umbilical cord to a machine that exchanges carbon dioxide in blood with oxygen, like a placenta normally does.

—The lamb’s heart circulates the blood, without the need for any other pump.

The researchers tested five lambs whose biological age was equivalent to 23-week human preemies, and three more a bit older. All appeared to grow normally, with blood pressure and other key health measures stable and few complications during the weeks they were inside the womb-like device.

The study didn’t address long-term development. Most of the lambs were euthanized for further study that found normal organ development for their gestational age. One was bottle-weaned and is now more than a year old, apparently healthy and living on a farm in Pennsylvania.

Flake stressed that the womb-like system isn’t intended to support preemies any younger than today’s limits of viability — not what he calls the more “sensationalistic” idea of artificially growing embryos.

He acknowledged that parents might question the approach, but notes that the preemies always could be whisked into standard care if they fared poorly in the new system. And while he said further adaptation of the device is needed before it can begin human testing, he envisioned parents being able to see the baby and even piping in the sound of mom’s heartbeat.

Stacey’s slogan neatly encapsulates her idea that gays are pioneering ways of living that will transform the family for everyone. Consciously echoing Giddens, Stacey draws out the implications of European family sociology in an American context.

In Stacey’s view, lesbian motherhood via artificial insemination helps pave the way for intentional single motherhood among heterosexuals. (Then artificial wombs and then cloning and then the extinction of the female. You've heard it here before, kiddies. Like Beck and Beck Gernsheim, Stacey sees the traditional family as something like the living dead. We are haunted by the ghost of the family, says Stacey. She suggests “a proper memorial service” to help us get over its death. But wouldn’t burying the traditional family mean greater instability, especially for children? Absolutely. Stacey frankly acknowledges her willingness to pay a steep price in family instability if it means promoting feminist values and unleashing a raft of experimental family forms. Stacey’s ideal is Scandinavia, where same-sex unions and unwed parenting are accepted, and where the welfare state steps in to mitigate the effects of family instability.

Pity the children. I can only hope they will arm themselves and exact terrible vengeance upon their liberators.

So there’s hardly a point about the power of same-sex unions to disrupt traditional marriage that Stacey herself hasn’t already made. The key difference between Stacey and conservative critics of same-sex marriage is that Stacey actually wants to undermine marriage. In short, the most influential European family sociologists, America’s radical academics, and American conservatives are surprisingly united in recognizing the potential of same-sex marriage to undermine marriage itself.

NEW DELHI — The ratio of women to men among India’s young people, which has been low compared with Western nations for decades, will drop further in the coming years, the Indian government has reported.

For people ages 15 to 34, the number of women for every thousand men will drop to 898 in 2031 from 939 in 2011, the report says, using projections from the World Bank. That decline outpaces a more modest drop in the sex ratio among the general population in the same period, and indicates the continuing practice of sex-selective abortion, experts say. The report, by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, was published in March.

Evidence of the abortion of female fetuses emerged strongly in the 1980s and has continued since then, in part because of the introduction and proliferation of ultrasound technology. The sex ratio in the general population dropped to 927 in 1991, census data shows, and has rebounded slightly since.

Among the reasons for Indians’ preference for a male child are the perception that men will take care of their aging parents financially, a desire to pass lineage through a male heir and a fear of being financially crippled by a dowry. But the report highlights what would appear to be a paradox: Even as fertility declines and as incomes and education increase, the process of sex-selective abortion continues.

“People are selecting to have fewer children but selecting to have boys,” said Poonam Muttreja, the executive director of the Population Foundation of India, a nongovernmental organization.

India outlawed prenatal sex determination in 1994, but enforcement is lax. Ms. Muttreja said that as income levels rise, so do aspirations, and as Indians emerge into the middle class they are limiting the size of their families and focusing their resources on male children, who are seen to offer a better return on investment.
The fertility rate of women in urban areas has come down to just over two children per woman in 2014, down from more than five in 1971.

UC Davis campus vending machine now selling Plan B contraceptive ...

A vending machine on the UC Davis campus has been installed offering the Plan B emergency contraceptive, otherwise known as the “morning after pill.”

Finish the sentence, you ghouls! "...that murders a baby after he has been conceived."

The vending machine arrived in early April near the activities and recreation center, according to news reports.

Former student senator Parteek Singh told FOX40 he’s been working with the university to make this contraceptive more available since 2015

“The more skeptical and negativity I got from other people like ‘oh it’s not gonna happen,’ kind of pushed me more,” Singh told the news station.

Plan B from the machine is $30. The machine also sells condoms, tampons and pads, pregnancy tests and pain relievers like Tylenol and Advil.

The campus is one of a handful nationwide to offer vending access to Plan B contraception.

PHOENIX — Three months ago, State Trooper Jonathan Otto, 33, of the Arizona Department of Public Safety pulled over a car that had caught his attention by traveling 104 miles per hour long after midnight, just south of Kingman. He smelled marijuana in the car. It was driven by a man with an adult female wearing only lingerie. Their passenger was a female juvenile whose fake document showed her to be 18. She was, Otto says, "not wearing a whole lot of clothing."

The adults had taken this 16-year-old from California to Arizona and were heading for Las Vegas. The girl gave Otto the California phone number of her grandmother, who immediately told him the girl might have been in prostitution since she was 15. Trained in interview techniques for such situations, and experienced at noticing people who somehow do not belong together, Otto correctly suspected DMST — domestic minor sex trafficking.

Trooper Mitch Jergenson, 46, stopped a car driven by a man whose passenger was a 17-year-old girl he had gotten to know via Facebook and other social media. He had paid for her ticket from California to Phoenix and was taking her to Las Vegas. She said she was going to be a "model," then said she was going to work in a strip club. This, says Jergenson, is "the start of a process" whereby minors often wind up working the streets. "Las Vegas has strict regulations, but … ."

Sgt. Scott Reutter, 47, who watches the motels near the Phoenix intersection of I-17 and I-10, where prostitutes are active, approached a young girl talking to an older man. She said she was 22. Reutter, whose daughters are 22 and 19, thought she was "14, maybe 15." She had been a runaway for 17 months, since she was 13, and said that if she were returned to the custody of child services she would run again. After a 10-minute hearing, she was returned. She immediately ran, and did so repeatedly. To be in law enforcement is often to feel condemned to bailing an ocean with a thimble.

Frank Milstead, too, knows how Sisyphus felt. When nature designed him, it had a director of the Department of Public Safety in mind. Large and laconic, he is the 54-year-old son of a Phoenix cop and, although he spent some time doing stand-up comedy, he knows in the marrow of his bones that "there are so many people out there who want to take advantage of other people."

It is unclear how many victims of DMST there are because for many reasons the crime is not often reported by its victims. They are, Milstead says, usually abducted, sort of, from "some environment where nobody missed them," adding, however, that traffickers cannot control "people who are unwilling."

But many trafficked minors, "who no one had made to feel valuable," are, Milstead says, "chronic runaways" with attenuated capacities for self-determination. They are products of poor or nonexistent parenting; their traffickers provide food, shelter, a simulacrum of caring, and drugs that produce dependency. Milstead guesses that 80 percent are addicted. Hence, they engage in "survival sex."

Survival Sex Is Death.

Milstead's troopers patrol motel parking lots and get to know those who do the motels' housekeeping and notice suspicious activity. Big sporting events, of which Phoenix has many — the Super Bowl, the Final Four, NCAA championship football games — attract traffickers. Troopers also watch bars and nightclubs where minors are offered for sex, and, increasingly, monitor the internet and social media.

The website Backpage, whose founders live in Arizona, began as a place for normal classified advertising but, a U.S. Senate investigation concluded, found its most lucrative business being a sexual marketplace. The New York Times reports that law enforcement officials say Backpage's "dating section" often "used teasers like 'Amber alert' and 'Lolita' to signal that children were for sale." According to the Times, "In the midst of a Senate investigation, a federal grand jury inquiry in Arizona, two federal lawsuits and criminal charges in California accusing Backpage's operators of pimping children, the website abruptly bowed to pressure in January and replaced its sex ads with the word 'Censored' in red."

Holding up his smartphone, Milstead, whose vocation reinforces his inclination to look on the dark side, says: "Leaving your kid alone at night in his room with this? You might as well leave him or her in the city park downtown. Anything is available on a phone."

I am old and tired, kids. I am cynical, bored, disillusioned, jaded, and ill. But most of all, I am pissed off.

I don't have many friends who enjoy the company of other men, but that doesn't mean I never have. {In case you are wondering, no lesbian friends at all. They are just mean...KIDDING! I kid because I care.} I have seen too many of them self-destruct mentally and physically. I can't stand the heartache inherent in caring for someone who can't or won't see that his passions are destroying him. So I avoid getting to know homosexuals not because I hate them, but because it is too painful... and it REALLY pisses me off!

BTW, the use of the word "gay" in this context has gone way beyond ironic. It can only be described as cruel now.


The author of the article below, Mr. David-Elijah Nahmod, and I have little in common except that which is most important: our shared humanity.

Despite the horrors inflicted upon him by others he thinks are just like him and should be his friends and allies, he clings to the notion that there is some sort of "community" to which he and they belong merely because they generally have the same attitude toward their respective genitals. [And specifically, in the case of his ex.].

Mr. Nahmod, no such community exists. Nor has it ever existed. Suicide in the LGBT Community, What's Driving So Many to Such Despair...


In December 2010, I came within 48 hours of committing suicide. At the time I was 54 years old. I had never before considered taking my life, but as 2010 drew to a close, I felt like I had nothing to live for.

My cat literally saved me. I've had Charlie, my then 12-year-old feline companion, his whole life. I was all he knew. He trusted me. If I was going to leave him behind, I felt that I should at least find another loving home for him. I couldn't just drop him off at a shelter, where he would no doubt be put down.

An ad on Craigslist offering Charlie up for adoption produced not a single response. And so I put off my pending suicide for Charlie's sake. A few weeks later, the desire to end my life passed. As I sit here, telling this sad tale, Charlie lies by my side, sleeping and purring peacefully. All is well in his world. Even though I no longer wish to die, my world has never felt right again.

Since 2010, I've read numerous accounts, in both the LGBT and mainstream media, which tell me that many others within the LGBT sphere are feeling the kind of hopeless despair that nearly killed me. We're all aware of the escalating levels of suicide among LGBT youth. Bullying, both online and off, appears to be the driving force behind these tragic losses. But it's not just kids.

On March 12, 2013, gay porn king Michael Lucas published “An Open Letter to the Gay Porn Industry.” Lucas' piece was seen in Adult Video News, an industry trade publication. In the heartfelt letter, Lucas calls upon the industry to offer emotional support systems for gay adult models. Lucas walked the walk: he published his email address and let it be known that any performers who were suffering from depression could reach out to him.

Lucas was inspired to take this stand by the recent suicide of his friend and former colleague Wilfred Knight--Knight's partner had himself committed suicide only two weeks earlier. The previous month, gay porn models Roman Ragazzi and Arpad Miklos had taken their own lives.

At about this time, Lucas made a shocking revelation on his Facebook page: 20 members of his gym, not one of whom worked in gay porn, had also committed suicide.

In an era when LGBT people are enjoying more visibility and acceptance than at any time in U.S. history, what could possibly be driving this horrifying epidemic?

In my own case, the answer is simple, yet profoundly disturbing. I was raised in an Orthodox Jewish household in an ultra-conservative, virulently homophobic community. My sexuality became apparent at a very young age. On the advice of a Rabbi, my parents put me in a mental hospital when I was 8 years old. I was kept heavily medicated. I was also fed a heavy dose of Bible quotes during "therapy." This, in essence, is the story of my childhood. I came out of the experience deeply wounded and scarred. I have since been diagnosed with PTSD--Post Traumatic Stress Disorder--for which now I take medication.

Decades later, in 2005, my now former partner found "the Lord." He left me to live with Kathryn and Stephen Polich, a conservative, Christian identified couple in Surprise, Arizona. In 2007, for no reason at all, Mr. and Mrs. Polich took out a restraining order against me, then proceeded to harass me while the order was in effect. Their actions included sending me emails with phrases like "you emasculated Jewish bitch" and "you ignorant Zionist fool."  They also subjected me to publicly posted jokes about mental illness, comments regarding the "disgusting homosexual acts" I indulge in, and accusations of pedophilia.

I contacted Judge Gerald Williams of the North Valley Justice Court in Surprise, to inform him of Mr. and Mrs. Polich's behavior. Judge Williams, who had granted them the Order of Protection, assured me that he would do nothing about this. I then turned to gay activists, and gay advocacy groups, and requested help.

The response I got was universal: "Ha ha. You're boyfriend doesn't love you anymore. Get over it." Everywhere I turned in the gay community I was either ignored or laughed at. In 2008, I was subjected to two lurid stories in the Phoenix New Times regarding my situation. In the stories, I was referred to as "delusional." I was subjected to further snarky innuendos about mental illness. Niki D'Andrea, the author of both stories, also made an issue out of my being Jewish, which I had never mentioned to her when she contacted me and requested an interview. I asked D'Andrea why she had done this. She had, after all, seen some of Mrs. Polich's postings about me.

"My editor and I agreed to ignore your documentation," D'Andrea told me. "But I'm an out lesbian, which makes it OK." A quick Google search informed me that D'Andrea has a long history of such conduct.

In December 2010, the harassment from Kathryn and Stephen Polich continued to escalate. The Surprise police finally stepped in to assist me. Thanks to the kind intervention of Surprise police officer Officer Michael King, Mr. and Mrs. Polich ended their reign of terror against me. Through it all, gay activists and writers continued to either ignore or laugh at me. My PTSD symptoms, which had been dormant for a number of years, returned, and I had to go back on a medication regimen.
It was the combination of all that hate and abuse, from the gay and anti-gay alike, that left me wanting to kill myself. Neither one nor the other was powerful enough to by themselves drive me to that state. It was the combination of both.

To this day, I've been unable to find a single gay activist who will tell me that they're sorry I was so horribly treated. I've told my story to literally hundreds of gay activists, all of whom know about my close brush with suicide. In August 2012, Times of Israel Magazine published “A Gay Jewish Man Learns That Hate Can Come From the Most Unexpected Places,” in which I shared a more detailed version of my story. Yet not one of the activists who claim to be fighting for our equality, or purport to be saving us from suicide, will offer me a kind word.

I am not alone in this experience. On April 4, SFGN courageously published “Bullying Is Not a Gay Right,” my expose on gay activist Kevin Patrick O'Neil, who has a history of bullying and threatening other LGBT people.

I've shared the O'Neil story with the LGBT activist community. This included showing them actual threatening emails that O'Neil sent to Rinna Hoffman, a young lesbian suicide attempt survivor. As with my own story, I showed Hoffman's emails to hundreds upon hundreds of people. Again I was ignored.

Those who saw Rinna's emails include Scott Rose, a gay blogger who's been published by Huffington Post and The New Civil Rights Movement. In a series of Facebook messages dated February 5, 2012, Rose expressed his support for the manner in which Hoffman was treated by O'Neil.

Hoffman's emails were also seen by Laura McGinnis of The Trevor Project, an LGBT youth suicide prevention organization. McGinnis told me she would offer a statement "if I can find the time", she said. She never found the time.

Gay blog sites such as Addicting Info and Taboo Jive publicly declared O'Neil to be a hero; they also saw the emails O'Neil sent to Hoffman.

What does it say about us as a community when a victim of anti-gay bias can be ridiculed, and a young suicide survivor can be threatened? What does it say about our movement when absolutely no one will come forward to right these terrible wrongs?

There's a great deal of validity to the argument that we're a psychologically damaged people. Centuries of hate have turned us into haters.

At some point we have to own up to what all that hate has turned us into. In “Bullying Is Not a Gay Right” I stated that our kids were killing themselves in record numbers. We've been failing them, I pointed out.

But now we see that it's not just kids who are dying. How many funerals must there be before we hold our leaders, and ourselves, accountable?

Please pray for Mr. Nahmod, kiddies, and all others like him who define themselves by what they do with their sexual organs. Remember, Hugh Hefner and Barney Frank are basically the same.

Unprotected Sex Without Disclosing HIV-Positive Status Would No Longer Be A Felony...

A group of California lawmakers have proposed legislation that would make it no longer a felony for an HIV-positive individual to knowingly expose others to the disease by not disclosing their HIV status and engaging in unprotected sex.

The new legislation would make such acts a misdemeanor. The measure was written by state Senator Scott Weiner (D-San Francisco) with Assemblywoman Susan Eggman (D-Stockton) and Assemblymen Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) and David Chiu (D-San Francisco).


The Los Angeles Times reports:

“HIV-related stigma is one of our main obstacles to reducing and ultimately eliminating infections,” Wiener said. “When you criminalize HIV or stigmatize people who have HIV it encourages people not to get tested, to stay in the shadows, not to be open about their status, not to seek treatment.”

Legislators who support the measure say medicine has made the current law unfair.
“These laws are absolutely discriminatory. No other serious infectious disease is treated this way. HIV was signaled out,” said Wiener, who wrote the legislation with Assemblywoman Susan Eggman (D-Stockton) and Assemblymen Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) and David Chiu (D-San Francisco).

They noted that someone can be charged with a felony even if the medicine they are taking makes them virally suppressed, which means it is unlikely they would pass the infection to another person.

“Current state law related to those living with HIV is unfair because it is based on the fear and ignorance of a bygone era,” Gloria said. “With this legislation, California takes an important step to update our laws to reflect the medical advances which no longer make a positive diagnosis equal to a death sentence."

The proposed legislation also has its opponents.

Opponents of the bill, including state Sen. Jeff Stone (R-Murrieta), say knowingly exposing others to a life-altering disease should remain a felony.

“HIV/AIDS remains a deadly disease,” Stone, a pharmacist, said in a statement. “Existing law provides accountability of those engaging in unprotected, risky behavior that endangers the life of another.”

Sen. Joel Anderson (R-San Diego) said the availability of medicines that can prolong life does not change the major impact an HIV-positive diagnosis has on a person’s life.

“While we have come a long way with AIDS, you still have to take drugs for the rest of your life. You still have to bear the burden of the costs of the health care,” Anderson said. “I get that this is the only disease that is treated that way, but I think any disease that you inflict on somebody against their will that permanently changes them should be a felony.”

Anderson said he would be willing to address the discrimination issue by adding other diseases to the list whose intentional spreading is a felony.

Hep C, anyone? If you share a dirty needle, you go to jail. At least you would be less likely to infect another.

He challenged the argument that the law change is needed because otherwise some people will not get tested and will continue spreading the disease.

“Because they are so disrespectful of the people they are willing to engage in a sexual act with and risk their life, that is the reason why they need to go to prison,” Anderson said. “They can’t be trusted in society as a responsible person.”

Be sure to screen patients for depression and other mental health issues. ƒ

Explore the social support network of patients—one’s level of identification with community strongly correlates with decreased risk for STDs and improved mental health

o Increased stress levels can translate into increase in tobacco, alcohol or drug use.

  o Ask all patients about intimate partner violence (IPV)

o Be knowledgeable about safer sex practices as they relate to LGBT individuals, also be able to answer questions about STD transmission rates which differ based on various sexual practices.

o Do not assume lesbian patients have never had male sexual partners, are not at risk for STDs or do not have children. Do not make similar assumptions for other LGBT individuals.  In short, do not make assumptions about past, current, and future sexual behavior.

o The CDC recommends that men who have sex with men be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B and receive yearly syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and HIV screening.  ƒ In addition gay and bisexual men may be at increased risk for anal cancer which is associated with HPV infection.

o Not all transsexual individuals have the means to undergo gender reassignment, an expensive process. 

ƒ Ask about hormone use, which has been prescribed or obtained on the black market. ƒ Ask about procedures that may have been completed as part of gender transformation.

o Use respectful language—listen to your patients and how they describe their own sexual orientation, partners, and relationships o Circulate these guidelines to all administrative, nursing, clinical staff...

From seniors to youth, our LGBTQ community faces persistent challenges. For example,

LGBTQ older adults are less likely than heterosexual elders to have children to look after them as they age – and they’re more likely to live alone.

And according to our TRENDS Report,

LGBTQ high schoolers report higher rates of dating violence, including sexual assault, than their straight peers.

In addition, LGBTQ youth are bullied to a much greater degree (30%) than heterosexual teens (17%), and are significantly more likely to contemplate and attempt suicide.

In response, the Open Door Fund, a permanent endowment of the Community Foundation, aims to support the strengths and needs of the LGBTQ population throughout the county in three ways: by building community, by facilitating collaboration and dialogue between our LGBTQ community and the county, and through fundraising and grantmaking.
