The Salt Lake Tribune: Ogden police dog puts truck in gear, runs over woman
They can sniff out drugs, find lost people and track down suspects, but K-9s are not trained to drive. So people in Ogden are wondering how one police dog slipped a truck into gear Tuesday and ran over a woman, seriously injuring her. "I've been here for almost 30 years and this is the first time I've heard it happening," said Ogden police Lt. Loring Draper...

From The Females Are Crazy Too Department:
The News-Press: Attackers Super Glue woman's mouth shut
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- One First Coast woman was out walking her dog Tuesday afternoon in her Arlington neighborhood. She says when the dog walk came to an end, a terrifying few minutes began.
"It's hard to talk about it" the woman told First Coast News. She wanted to tell us her story if we concealed her identity.
She says when she walked in her house, five masked women came out of the bedrooms and attacked her.
"You can't fight back because there are five of them," she said.
"They made me take my clothes off. They ripped my shirt off with a knife. They made me turn over on my stomach on the bed and they tied my feet together."
She says one of the attackers decided she was making too much noise.
"They were trying to look for something to put in my mouth, and they found some super glue I had, and they thought it would be funny to super glue my lips shut."
She says the women held her mouth open, put super glue on her lips, and held her mouth shut until it dried.
She says she could not talk, move, or see.
"They were hitting me in my back. I couldn't cry out because I was scared I'd rip my lips."
"Then they went to the front of the house, and I started hearing breaking of personal items, and pictures being ripped off the wall."
Back in the bedroom, she says the attackers stabbed the bed on each side of her head, and left the knives in the mattress.
She lay there for awhile, until she thought it was safe to move.
She says she got one hand out of the handcuffs, and pulled one knife out of the bed to cut herself free.
She put on clothes and ran outside.
"My neighbor helped me get my lips apart and then we called 911."
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the women may have pushed a dryer up to a back window to get inside.
It's not the woman's first scare.
She says the message "Leave or Die" was spray-painted on her front door a few weeks ago.
"I was scared that that was going to be the day that it was going to happen, that they were going to kill me."
Investigators are looking into the possibility that one of the attackers may have had a relationship with the victim's fiancé. (Emphasis mine.)
Hmmm...I wonder why the guy broke up with that one...

BUGS ATTACK MICHELLE WIE...
...or, Interview With A Sixteen Year Old.
Michelle Wie Interview
Editor’s Note: Michelle Wie’s sixth foray onto the PGA Tour wasn’t quite as successful as the 16-year-old prodigy had hoped. Her first round in the John Deere Classic at the Tournament Players Club at Deere Run in East Moline, Ill., was an unspectacular 6-over 77. Here’s what Wie had to say after Thursday’s round.
MODERATOR: We thank Michelle Wie for stopping in after a 6 over 77 in today's first round of the John Deere Classic. I know it's not the start you hoped for today. First couple holes you had a couple balls go right off the tee it seemed today.
MICHELLE WIE: Yeah. I mean, it was very uncharacteristic of me to do that, but I felt like considering that I had the water hazard penalties, considering that I had to call unplayable, considering that I hit my driver like 50 yards right, I felt like I played really well. I felt like I made a lot of great up and downs, I felt like I putted great, my irons were good. You know, on the last couple holes during the back nine, I felt like my driver was working very well. I feel like I have a lot of confidence going into tomorrow.
MODERATOR: Looks like you shook off that front nine on the back there. Tell us what was the change from the front to back?
MICHELLE WIE: You know, I just changed my posture a little bit and tweaked around a little bit, played around with my shots. It couldn't get any worse, so I just played around with it. Luckily it worked, so I'll keep that same mentality going for tomorrow.
Q. That bug on the second tee kind of seemed to get to you a little bit.
WTF???
MICHELLE WIE: I mean, literally I had like five of them on me. As soon as I got on the ball I mean, it's okay if the bugs are like around the ball, I can handle that. But they were crawling on my arm, they were on my hand, they were on my head. I mean, it was just ridiculous. I had to step back like five times. It was just very unfortunate.
Q. Did that kind of throw you off, your concentration?
MICHELLE WIE: I would like to say it didn't, but it bothered me a little bit. Bugs on me, I hate bugs, and I was starting to get a little aggravated like the fifth time I stepped out. I was a little aggravated, but I felt like I shook it off. Obviously I didn't hit that tee shot the way I wanted to, but I don't think it was because of the bugs.
Q. How were you feeling physically today as far as coming into the round? Were you tired at all and did you have any aches and pains or anything during the round?
MICHELLE WIE: No, I felt pretty good. It was very hot out there. I'm not really used to wearing long pants in the heat, but it was okay. I mean, obviously there's a lot of hills on this golf course, but I didn't really feel tired. I was sweating a lot out there, but I felt like I hydrated myself very well when I had to, and I kept my energy level up all around.
It is a crime to make a girl with legs like that wear long pants. She should be sent back to the chick tour where she can wear miniskirts as Hootie Johnson intended.
Q. Last year after the first round you were 1 under. Just talk about how disappointing I guess it is for you to be where you are now compared to where you were at this time last year.
MICHELLE WIE: Well, I didn't make the cut shooting 1 under on the first round, so maybe shooting 6 over might do it (laughter).
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha-
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

WFIE: Michigan: Tiny Bet Pays Off Big
A woman who placed a ten-cent bet at a Michigan horse track has won $21,584. The woman's name wasn't released. She made the bet Friday at Sports Creek Raceway in Swartz Creek, about 55 miles northwest of Detroit. The Old Gray Whore hates America.
It is time to forcibly embed all the antique media with Hezbollah...
New York Times: Better Dead Than Read
by Ann Coulter
When I told a New York Observer reporter that my only regret was that Timothy McVeigh didn't hit the New York Times building, I knew many would agree with me -- but I didn't expect that to include the New York Times. And yet, the Times is doing everything in its power to help the terrorists launch another attack on New York City.
As with forced school busing, liberals seem to believe that the consequences of their insane ideas can be confined to the outer boroughs.
Last year, the Times revealed a top secret program tracking phone calls connected to numbers found in Khalid Shaikh Mohammed's cell phone. How much more probable cause do you need, folks? Shall we do this as a diagram? How about in the form of an SAT question -- or is that a touchy subject for the publisher of the Times? "9/11 architect Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is to terrorist attacks as ..."?
Their reaction to al-Zarqawi's death was to lower the U.S. flag at the Times building to half-staff. (Ha ha -- just kidding! Everybody knows there aren't any American flags at the New York Times.)
Ha! It's funny because it's true.
And most recently, ignoring the pleas of the administration, 9/11 commissioners and even certifiable liberal Rep. Jack Murtha, the Times revealed another top secret program that had allowed the Treasury Department to track terrorists' financial transactions.
We're in a battle for our survival and we don't even know who the enemy is. As liberals are constantly reminding us, Islam is a "Religion of Peace." One very promising method of distinguishing the "Religion of Peace" Muslims from the "Slit Their Throats" Muslims is by following the al Qaeda money trail.
But now we've lost that ability -- thanks to the New York Times.
People have gotten so inured to ridiculous behavior on the left that they are no longer capable of appropriate outrage when something truly treasonous happens. It is rather like the rape accusation against Bill Clinton losing its impact because of the steady stream of perjury, obstruction of justice, treason, adultery and general sociopathic behavior coming from that administration.
This is a phenomenon known in the self-help community as "Clinton fatigue" (not to be confused with the lower back pain associated with excessive sexual activity known as "Clinton back").
Heehee!
In December 1972, Ronald Reagan called President Richard Nixon after watching Walter Cronkite's coverage of the Vietnam War on "CBS News," telling Nixon that "under World War II circumstances, the network would have been charged with treason."
Ah, the good old days...
No treason charges were brought, but we still have to hear liberals carrying on about Nixon's monstrous persecution of the press -- which was so ungrateful of him, considering how nicely the press treated him.
Today, Times editors and columnists are doing what liberals always do when they're caught red-handed committing treason: They scream that they're being "intimidated" before hurling more invective. This is getting to be like listening to the Soviet Union complaining about the intimidation coming from Finland.
Liberals are always play-acting that they are under some monstrous attack from the right wing as they insouciantly place all Americans in danger. Their default position is umbrage, bordering on high dudgeon.
We've had to listen to them whine for 50 years about the brute Joe McCarthy, whose name liberals blackened while sheltering Soviet spies.
In 1985, Times columnist Anthony Lewis accused the Reagan administration of trying to "intimidate the press." Channeling Anthony Lewis this week, Frank Rich claims the Bush administration has "manufactured and milked this controversy to reboot its intimidation of the press, hoping journalists will pull punches in an election year."
Rich's evidence of the brutal crackdown on the press was the statement of San Francisco radio host Melanie Morgan -- who, by the way, is part of the press -- proposing the gas chamber for the editor of the Times if he were found guilty of treason, which happens to be the punishment prescribed by law. (Once again Frank Rich finds himself in over his head when not writing about gay cowboy movies.)
HEEHEE! Perfect.
I prefer a firing squad, but I'm open to a debate on the method of execution. A conviction for treason would be assured under any sensible legal system.
But however many Americans agree with Reagan on prosecuting treason, we can't even get President Bush to stop building up the liberal media by appearing on their low-rated TV shows -- in the process, dissing TV hosts who support him and command much larger TV audiences. American consumers keep driving CNN's ratings down, and then Bush drives them back up again. So I wouldn't count on any treason charges emanating from this administration.
This is how Bush "intimidates" the press? The level of intimidation I had in mind is more along the lines of how President Dwight D. Eisenhower "intimidated" Julius and Ethel Rosenberg at 8 in the morning, June 19, 1953.
Amen to that, Sister.

Behold! The "palestinian" goat rapists die for the greater glory of Iran and Syria!
Here's the bottom line:
Iran and Syria will NOT go to war with Israel over Hamas and Hezbollah, though they will give their terrorist proxies enough guns and money to fight to the death.
IF (In case you didn't notice, that's a big if.) Israel has the strength of will to resist the pressure from the US and the "international community" and prosecute this war as they should, the goat rapists might leave her alone for a generation.
Sadly, there are few real men running Israel these days.
AP: Israeli warplanes strike in Beirut again
BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israeli warplanes punished the Lebanese capital on Friday, blasting the airport for a second day, shattering bridges, igniting fuel storage tanks and cutting the main highway to Syria. Hezbollah guerrillas fought back with a fresh barrage of rockets. Police said three people were killed and dozens wounded in the airstrikes, raising the death toll to 60 on the third day of Israel's offensive against the Iranian-backed militants.

Man, 80, traded crack for sex
How screwed up are we, kiddies? This one is too common to qualify as a SEX IS DEATH story.
An 80-year-old Bloomfield man pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges he traded crack cocaine from his home.
Felix Cocco had been dealing drugs off his back porch for nearly a year when Pittsburgh police first arrested him in November. They seized crack, a digital scale, packaging materials and a pistol during that bust. He was caught dealing again in February.
"I was trying to stay alive, your honor, pay my bills," Cocco said after Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning asked why he had chosen a new profession so late in life.
Defense attorney Martha Bailor said Cocco wanted to remain sexually active after his wife died three years ago, and turned to prostitutes.
"He decided it's cheaper to pay for sex with crack than cash," Bailor told the judge.
Assistant District Attorney Matt Wholey said he would forgo seeking mandatory sentences that would put Cocco in prison for at least seven years if Cocco and Bailor agreed to a six-to-18-month jail term.
Manning ordered a pre-sentence evaluation of Cocco's health at the request of Bailor, who said she was concerned about her client's "vulnerability" in jail.
Manning also put Cocco on house arrest -- during which he will wear an electronic-monitoring bracelet -- until he is sentenced on Oct. 2. (Thanks to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for the heads up.)

AP: Italian scientists exhume body of castrato
Scientists have exhumed the body of the legendary 18th-century opera singer Farinelli to learn more about the castrati, male singers neutered in childhood to preserve their high-pitched voices.
Farinelli was the most popular and best-paid opera singer in Europe before his death in 1782. His remains were exhumed Wednesday from the historic Certosa cemetery in Bologna, said musicologist Carlo Vitali, a founder of the Farinelli Studies Center.
The bones will be examined by scientists from the universities of Bologna and Pisa for insights into Farinelli's lifestyle, habits and possible diseases, as well as the physiology of a castrato.
Scientists were surprised to find not just Farinelli's remains but also those of his grandniece Carlotta Pisani Broschi.
"When Carlotta died in 1850, the grave was reopened and Farinelli's bones were stacked together at the base of the tomb to make (a) place for Carlotta's remains," Vitali said Thursday.
The stacking of the bones degraded the preservation of Farinelli's remains, which included his jawbone, several teeth, parts of his skull and almost all of his major bones.
Vitali described the major bones as "long and sturdy, which would correspond with Farinelli's official portraits, as well as the castrati's reputation for being unusually tall."

SDI is on its way. And it works.
AAP: THAAD System Intercepts Live Missile Target
The US military said it successfully tested a missile-shield component built by Lockheed Martin Corp to shoot down a ballistic missile in the last minute or so of its flight.
The so-called Terminal High Altitude Area Defense weapon system, or THAAD, "exceeded its objectives" in the long-planned test by shooting down a non-separating Hera target missile at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, Lockheed said in a statement.
THAAD, which is still being developed, is to be part of a layered shield meant to defend against all ranges of ballistic missiles in all phases of flight.
The backbone of the fledgling US shield - a ground-based system coordinated by Boeing Co. to thwart long-range missiles in the middle of their flight path - was on alert during North Korea's missile launches a week ago.
Of 10 planned flight tests of the ground-based, mid-course system, five have ended with successful intercepts. In the two most recent ones, the interceptor did not get off the ground.
The THAAD element is designed to destroy short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their terminal flight phase - approximately the last minute of flight.
The Pentagon plans to field two units consisting of 24 missiles each, the first one in 2009 and the second one by December 2011, according to the Government Accountability Office, Congress's investigative and audit arm.
"Initial indications are that all planned flight test objectives were achieved," the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency said of the THAAD test.
Pam Rogers, an agency spokeswoman, said the test had "absolutely no connection to the situation in North Korea," which test-fired at least seven ballistic missiles on July 5, including a multistage Taepodong 2 missile with a potential range that could include Alaska.
This marked the third successful THAAD developmental flight test since such testing resumed in November 2005. The remaining tests are for verifying the system's capabilities at "increasingly difficult levels," the Missile Defense Agency said.

Totalitarian Pennsylvania Update.
Philly Machine hack "Slow Eddie" Rendell is just another big government, high tax, big spending, leftist moron vote buyer. You should have known better, Pennsylvania.
From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and AP:
State spending during Gov. Ed Rendell's first three years in office increased faster than the national average, while his first-term spending is projected to be just shy of the two-decade peak set by the late former Gov. Robert P. Casey.
Counting the budget for the current fiscal year, which Rendell just signed, the state's general fund budget has grown by $5.7 billion, or 28 percent, since he took office in 2003, according to an Associated Press analysis of figures provided by the state budget office.
Casey, a fellow Democrat whose son is now the state treasurer, approved increases that totaled 28.3 percent during his first term, from 1987 to 1990. In Casey's second term, spending grew by 26.2 percent.
In between the Casey and Rendell administrations, the two Republican governors who shared an eight-year tenure _ Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker _ held spending growth to well below 20 percent in each four-year term.
The comparison is important because Republican Lynn Swann, Rendell's re-election challenger, is making an issue of Rendell's fiscal stewardship.
Within hours after the Republican-controlled Legislature passed the fourth and last budget of Rendell's first term, which will increase spending by 5.8 percent over last year, Swann issued a statement calling the budget "bloated" and urging Rendell to veto it.
The overall dollar increase during the Rendell administration has been fueled largely by an expansion in subsidies for public schools, pensions, medical care for the poor and child care services. The former Philadelphia mayor has made a point of keeping services for the poor intact while pouring money into signature programs targeted at improving early childhood education.
Rendell's average annual increase of 6.6 percent in his first three years is nearly a percentage point bigger than the 5.7 percent average annual increase in other states' general fund budgets over the same period, according to figures from the National Association of State Budget Officers.
It is also bigger than the 5.5 percent average annual increase in other states' general fund budgets over the previous two decades, the figures show.

The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.
Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy clemency hear and answer me. Amen.
St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse, pray for us.
Prayer to St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire
Dear St. Anthony, you became a Franciscan with the hope of shedding your blood for Christ. In God's plan for you, your thirst for martyrdom was never to be satisfied. St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire, pray that I may become less afraid to stand up and be counted as a follower of the Lord Jesus. Intercede also for my other intentions. (Name them.)
Prayer To Saint Michael The Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the divine power, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God, I thank You today for the gift of my life, and for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part to end abortion. Today I commit myself never to be silent, never to be passive, and never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement, and never stop defending life until all my brothers and sisters are protected and our nation once again becomes a nation with liberty and justice, not just for some, but for all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer For Vocations
Send forth your Spirit, Lord, into the hearts of your faithful people, that we may be conscious of our vocation to holiness and sevice to others. Grant that many of us may dedicate ourselves to You through the priesthood and the religious life.We pray especially for the needs of our own parish and diocese. Grant that we may always have sufficient good and holy priests, and dedicated Sisters to serve our commumities. We pray, too, for religious orders; that generous men may join them to become zealous missionaries in preaching the Gospel in word and action, especially to the poor and abandoned. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Religion of Peace and Love Coming to Your Town Update.
Fyodor's Website of the Day is usually a happy or fun place to visit. Today's isn't.
IslamicFinder is interesting. The way serial killers are interesting. Here is my periodic warning to however many decent
mohammedans there are left in this world:
Eradicate the murderous strain of ignorance in your midst or it will be done for you. The rest of the world may be fat, lazy, and slow to anger, but it will destroy you (innocent and guilty alike) in order to survive.
Anyway, IslamicFinder has oodles of fascinating articles. Joe Kaufman of FrontPage Magazine found these while writing a story on the proliferation of death-cult mohammedan mosques in America:
In the Islamic Finder article, entitled “50 Signs of the Day of Judgment,” an impending war is discussed between Muslims and “the Jews plus other non-Muslims led by the Antichrist.” According to the article, the Antichrist “will be followed by 70,000 Jews.”
Whoa! Arlen Specter, call your office.
Another Islamic Finder article describes in which instances and to what degree a husband is allowed to beat his wife. It states, “It is important that a wife recognizes the authority of her husband in the house. He is the head of the household, and she is supposed to listen to him… If there arises any disagreement or dispute among them, then it should be resolved in a peaceful manner… However, in some cases a husband may use some light disciplinary action in order to correct the moral infraction of his wife…”
Golly, that's not a very nice way to treat the fairer sex, is it, kiddies? I'll bet that's why all the gals over at NOW joined the Army and went to Iraq to filet those goat rapists from the crotch on up.
As a Catholic, I found 20 Causes of Forgiveness of Future Sins to be particularly unsound.
What is the Shape of the Earth?* tells us mohammedan scholars beat that old rascal Columbus to the punch.
The Appearance of Gog and Magog will appeal to the Left Behind crowd.
Life With the TV cautions good mohammedan parents to stop their kiddies from watching Fox News and other Crusader broadcasts.
There is one article entitled Can a Muslim woman ask a Muslim man to...?, but I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole.
10 Books Every Muslim Should Read! Now there's something to pique Your Humble Servant's interest. Not surprisingly, the only one on the list I have read is The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to the arch-conman Alex Haley. How pathetic! How could the folks who discovered the earth was round* end up slurping the obviously heterodox Citizen X?
I will end with #99, Punishment In The Hellfire, which more mohammedans should take to heart.
Memo To The Mohammedans: If you think I am picking on your religion, I want you to know I would gladly post something similar on any other false religion, like protestantism. Just send me a link to their foolishness.

Fascist Carter-appointed judge assures election fraud will go unpunished.
The Columbus Dispatch: Georgia not allowed to require voter IDs
The same federal judge who threw out Georgia’s voter ID law last year blocked the state yesterday from enforcing its revised law during this year’s elections...
U.S. District Judge Harold Murphy’s ruling, which he delivered orally from the bench, was much broader, also including the Nov. 7 general elections and any runoffs.
If the rulings stand, Georgia voters will not have to show a government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot this year. The state’s primary election — which would have been the first election for which the IDs were required — is Tuesday.
Murphy said the state’s latest attempt to require photo IDs for voters discriminated against people who don’t have driver’s licenses, passports or other government IDs.
"That is the failure of this legislation as it stands," he said.

THIS is baseball!
Soccer? HA!
AP: Man, 83, is oldest pro baseball player
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No one in the bleachers at the Sioux Falls Canaries game was quite sure what was going on down on the field. They were all quiet, wondering and transfixed on the little old man digging into the batters' box.
The infielders moved up on the grass, giggling, and pitcher looked as uncomfortable as anyone else would have felt.
But to 83-year-old Jim Eriotes, it was serious business.
Eriotes led off Tuesday's game for the Canaries against the St. Joe (Mo.) Blacksnakes and took four big swings — even fouling a pitch off — before striking out.
The at-bat made Eriotes the oldest man to ever play professional baseball. It was his only at-bat in the game.
The record didn't mean much to the Chicago native and former minor leaguer.
"I don't give a damn about that stuff," he said, bothered by his failure to reach base. "If I got a couple more at-bats, I'd get a hit. Easy."
Hot diggity!
He wasn't kidding.
Eriotes said he had hit pitches thrown harder than the 83-mph fastball he whiffed against Blacksnakes starter Jesen Merle.
He has appeared on the "Today" show and said he has hit pitches near 100 mph — although they were hurled by a pitching machine.
He did admit that stepping into the box with a professional on the mound is a different story.
"He wasn't throwing that hard," he said. "I fouled one off. You can be the best hitter in the world and you might not get a hit if you only get one chance. But it was a great opportunity. It was cool."
Amen to that!
Spectators Derek Johnson, 27, already had bought his ticket for the game before knowing about Eriotes. But he said he made sure to arrive on time after hearing about the 83-year-old.
"I could not believe he actually got a piece of one. That's better than I could do," he said.
But Johnson's friend Dean Faynor thought the gimmick was excessive.
"I don't know, man, a real game? That's kind of bush," he said.
Former major leaguer Chad Hermansen made sure the Canaries won.
Ralph Santana singled and stole second after Eriotes' at-bat, and Hermansen quickly followed with a two-run homer. He later added a double and another homer as the Canaries defeated the Blacksnakes, 5-3.
So that's what happened to Chad Hermansen.
Hermansen got a good laugh out of his new, and now former, teammate.
"We didn't really know what to expect until we saw him hanging out in the dugout," Hermansen said. "As long as it didn't affect the game, I guess."
But don't expect to see Eriotes in any senior leagues. He's only interested in facing the best.
"Guys my age, it's no challenge," he said. "They're throwing like, what, 40, 50 mph? I'd rather hit pitches that are 90 mph and feel good about myself. If I could just get four at-bats in the majors, I could get a hit."
Amen to all that! Whoever is facing the Phillies' and their pathetic pitching this weekend should sign Mr. Reiotes.

Mrs. Louise Will, Requiescat in pace.
Mr. George Will has lost his dear mother. On this 17th day of Tamuz, 5766, he says goodbye:
The long dying of Louise Will ended here recently. It was time. At 98, her body was exhausted by disease and strokes. Dementia, that stealthy thief of identity, had bleached her vibrant self almost to indistinctness, like a photograph long exposed to sunlight.
It is said that G-d gave us memory so we could have roses in winter. Dementia is an ever-deepening advance of wintry whiteness, a protracted paring away of personality. It inflicts on victims the terror of attenuated personhood, challenging philosophic and theological attempts to make death a clean, intelligible and bearable demarcation.
Is death the soul taking flight after the body has failed? That sequence — the physical extinguished, the spiritual not — serves our notion of human dignity. However, mental disintegration mocks that comforting schema by taking the spirit first.
In the very elderly the mind can come and go, a wanderer in time, and a disintegrating personality can acquire angers and jagged edges that are, perhaps, protests against a growing lightness of being. No one has come back from deep in that foreign country to report on life there. However, it must be unbearably frightening to feel one's self become light as a feather, with inner gales rising.
Dementia slowly loosens the sufferer's grip on those unique tokens of humanity, words. An early sign is a forgetfulness that results in repetitiveness, and fixation on the distant past.
For a while, one of Louise's insistently recurring memories was of spring 1918, a war year, and eastbound troop trains passing through Greenville, Pa. When the trains stopped, residents offered candy and magazines to the soldiers — but not to black units. That infuriated Louise's father, whose fury was a fine memory for Louise to have among those of a father who died at age 44.
To the end, even when virtually without speech, Louise could recognize her children, could enjoy music and being read to from love letters written 75 years ago by Fred, her future husband. She could even laugh, in spite of the tormenting chasm between her remaining cognition and the prison of her vanished ability to articulate.
In 1951, in Champaign, Ill., for her 10-year-old son, she made a mother's sacrifice: She became a White Sox fan so she could converse with the argumentative Cubs fan who each evening dried the dishes as she washed. Even after much of her stock of memories had been depleted, she dimly knew that the name Nellie Fox (a second baseman) once meant something playful.
The aging that conquered Louise was, like war, a mighty scourge, and, like war, elicited nobility from those near its vortex. The nearest was Fred Will, who died eight years ago, at the end of his ninth decade.
A few years before his death, Fred, a reticent romantic, whose reticence may have been an effect of his tinge of melancholy, shared with his children some poetry he had written for Louise, including this from 1933:
The warm sun
Beams through the clear air
Upon glistening leaves.
And the birds
Sweep in long arcs
Over the green grass.
They seem to say,
"This might last forever!"
But it doesn't.
But it lasted more than six decades, which is forever, as foreverness is allotted to us.
A retired professor of philosophy, Fred probably knew what Montaigne, quoting Cicero, meant when he said that to study philosophy is to prepare to die. Fred was, strictly speaking, philosophic about his wife's affliction. A common connotation of "philosophic" is placid acceptance of what can be comprehended but not altered. However, Fred's philosophic response to the theft of his wife by aging was much richer than mere stoicism grounded in fatalism. It was a heroic act of will, arising from clearsightedness about the long trajectory of Louise's life.
He understood this stern paradox: Families seared by a loved one's dementia face the challenge of forgetting. They must choose to achieve what dementia inflicts on its victims — short-term memory loss. They must restore to the foreground of remembrance the older memories of vivacity and wit.
"All that we can know about those we have loved and lost," Thornton Wilder wrote, "is that they would wish us to remember them with a more intensified realization of their reality. What is essential does not die but clarifies. The highest tribute to the dead is not grief but gratitude." Louise, released from the toils of old age and modern medicine, is restored to clarity.

Dr. Thomas Sowell defends the foundation of our legal system against the depredations of the antique media.
From RealClearPolitics (via Laura Ingraham) comes everything you need to know about Our Boys and the dunderheads of the press.
Media Mistreat American Troops
By Thomas Sowell
The same newspapers and television news programs that are constantly reminding us that some people under indictment "are innocent until proven guilty" are nevertheless hyping the story of American troops accused of rape in Iraq, day in and day out, even though these troops have yet to be proven guilty of anything.
What about all the civilian rapes that are charged -- and even proven -- in the United States? None of them gets this 24/7 coverage in the mainstream media.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated example of media hype of unproven charges against American troops. While military action was still raging in the early days of the Iraq war, there was media condemnation of our troops for not adequately protecting an Iraqi museum from which various items were missing.
When the smoke of battle cleared, it turned out that members of the museum staff had hidden these items for safekeeping during the fighting.
Then there was the incident when a Marine shot a terrorist who was pretending to be asleep and the media turned that into a big scandal until an investigation revealed how these and other tricks used by terrorists had cost the lives of American troops in Iraq.
None of the brutal beheadings of innocent hostages taken by terrorists in Iraq -- and videotaped for distribution throughout the Middle East -- has aroused half the outrage in the mainstream media as unsubstantiated charges made by terrorists imprisoned in Guantanamo.
Nor have most of the media become any more skeptical about charges made by these cutthroats in Guantanamo after the claim that copies of the Koran had been flushed down the toilet at that prison turned out to be a lie.The idea of trying to flush any book down a toilet ought to have raised suspicions but much of the media treats statements by terrorists and their supporters as true and any denials of wrongdoing by American troops as false and "a coverup."
These are the same liberal media people who claim to be "honoring our troops" when they hype every casualty and make a big production of each landmark death, such as the 1000th American killed in Iraq and then the 2000th.The multiple-page spread in the New York Times and similarly elaborate coverage of these landmark deaths on liberal television programs show that they had been preparing for these particular deaths for some time.
They may well be disappointed if we don't reach the 3000th American death, since the terrorists have shifted their attacks and now target primarily Iraqi civilians. We all need to understand the fraudulence of the claim that these media liberals who have been against the military for decades and who have missed no opportunity to smear the military in Iraq are now in the forefront of "honoring" our troops by rubbing our noses in their deaths, day in and day out.
Troops who have won medals for bravery in battle -- including one soldier who won a Congressional Medal of Honor at the cost of his life -- go unmentioned in most of the mainstream media that is focused on our troops as casualties that they can exploit.
A recent study by the Media Research Center found that the three big broadcast news networks -- CBS, ABC, and NBC -- ran 99 stories in 3 and 1/2 hours about the investigation of charges against Marines in the death of Iraqi civilians in Haditha last November.
These remain unproven charges in a country where people on the side of the terrorists include civilian women and children who set off bombs to kill American troops and who can set off lies to discredit those that they do not kill.
But the same networks that lavished 3 and 1/2 hours of coverage of these unproven charges gave less than one hour of coverage of all the American troops who have won medals for bravery under fire.
Every newspaper and every television commentator has a right to criticize any aspect of the war in Iraq or anywhere else. But when they claim to be reporting the news, that does not mean filtering out whatever goes against their editorial views and hyping unsubstantiated claims that discredit the troops.
Those troops deserve the presumption of innocence at least as much as anyone else.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune: Milwaukee gas giveaway sparks crashes, arrests
Two vehicle crashes occurred, four people were arrested for fighting and three officers got sent to the hospital all over some free gasoline Wednesday. For the most part, hundreds of drivers waited patiently for hours for about $30 worth of free gasoline from Allstate Insurance as a reward to Milwaukee for ranking high on its safe drivers list. Steelers Update.
The Steelers' QB was even luckier than I thought...
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Roethlisberger was told he was close to dying
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Wednesday night that he was told he was "seconds, maybe a minute away from dying" immediately after his motorcycle accident last month.
Roethlisberger, in his first interview since the June 12 accident, told ESPN's "SportsCenter" that he doesn't remember much about the accident when he rammed his motorcycle into a car that was making a left turn in front of him. He did, however, remember what he was told by people at the scene.
"They told me that I was literally seconds, maybe a minute away from dying, because I slit a vein or artery in my mouth or my throat and it was draining blood right into my stomach, and luckily the paramedic noticed it and stopped it, or else I would have had too much blood in my stomach," he said in Los Angeles, where he was for the taping of the ESPY Awards.
"I remember very few things about the accident," Roethlisberger said. "I remember one car turning in front of me, I don't remember the car that hit me, but I remember that first car turning in front of me, and the next thing I remember is being in the ambulance and asking, 'Is this really happening?'
"I said, 'Tell me this is just a bad dream,' and he said, 'No, everything is going to be OK,' and he asked me, 'Is there anyone you want me to call?' ... I just gave him two numbers, and I don't remember anything until I woke up from surgery."
Roethlisberger underwent seven hours of surgery to repair a broken jaw and other facial bones. Tests showed no brain injuries, although he had a mild concussion. He also lost two teeth and chipped several others.
Roethlisberger was cited for not wearing a helmet when the accident happened.
"That day I wasn't, I forgot it. I literally forgot it," he said. "You know there are times that, people that have been making a big deal for the last couple years about me riding first of all, and then me riding without a helmet, but it's one of those things that I ride with a helmet also. I do a little bit of both. If you don't wear a seat belt every time you ride in the car, should I label you as a person who doesn't wear a seat belt? And, unfortunately, I happened to not have it on that day because I forgot it in the basement."
Oh, please...
Roethlisberger said he didn't know if he would ride a motorcycle again.
"I don't know. I am not even thinking about that right now," he said. "To me, right now, like I said when I first started thinking about things, I started thinking about my family. Now that I am doing better and I feel good, now all I am thinking about is football and that is what is on my mind right now. I am getting healthy and I am getting better every day, so all I am thinking about is football. I am not thinking about anything else."
Roethlisberger is scheduled to play in a celebrity golf tournament this weekend in Lake Tahoe, Nev.
Including the postseason, the Steelers are 27-4 with Roethlisberger at quarterback. They advanced to the AFC championship game in both his seasons as a starter, winning the Super Bowl in January.
The Steelers won the ESPY for best team and Roethlisberger joined his teammates and coach Bill Cowher onstage to accept the award. It was his first public appearance since the accident.
Roethlisberger didn't appear backstage to talk to reporters.

I've always hated that book.
For the literary-minded among you...
AP: Relatives mark anniversary of 'Tragedy'
BIG MOOSE LAKE, N.Y. - Grace Brown headed to the Adirondack Mountains hoping for a marriage proposal. Instead, authorities said the pregnant woman was murdered by her lover in a sorrowful saga that became the basis for Theodore Dreiser's 1925 novel, "An American Tragedy."
The story was later spun into an Oscar-winning movie, television programs, plays, songs, true crime books and most recently an opera on the Metropolitan Opera stage.
Huh?
In observance of the 100th anniversary of the killing, two of Brown's relatives helped unveil a historical marker Tuesday next to the lake where she died.
"This is very meaningful, especially since so many people in our extended family don't ever talk about it," Robert Williams said of his great-aunt. "By memorializing Grace like this, it feels like we're bringing her back into the family."
About 50 people gathered on the western shore of Big Moose Lake to witness the unveiling of the blue-and-yellow marker. Later Williams and his sister Susan Williams laid a large floral wreath in the lake on the spot where Brown was believed to have been killed.
Surrounded by about 200 onlookers in a flotilla of small boats and canoes, an actress read Brown's last letter to her lover and a local clergyman offered a prayer.
On July 11, 1906, Brown and Chester Gillette took an afternoon rowboat ride on the lake. Authorities said Gillette struck Brown in the head with a tennis racket, and she fell into the lake and drowned.
Brown's body was found the next day in the lake along with the overturned rowboat. Gillette was spotted walking away with his luggage and arrested three days later in nearby Inlet. Soon after, the sheriff found the tennis racket buried under a log.
Gillette's monthlong trial made headlines across the country. He said Brown drowned accidentally, and that he panicked and fled. In March 1908, he was executed in the electric chair at Auburn State Prison.
The story might have faded from public interest if not for Dreiser's novel. In 1951, the story was adapted to the movie screen in "A Place in the Sun," which starred Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters, and won six Oscars.
The three upstate New York counties that share the story's history have held a series of summer events to observe the 100th anniversary, including a re-enactment of Gillette's trial and a three-day conference for scholars.
Susan Williams, of Southfield, Mich., said other relatives have tried to keep their connection secret, likely ashamed that Grace was unwed and pregnant when she was killed and because of the notoriety Gillette's trial later brought the family.
Robert Williams, of Atlanta, Mich., said he didn't learn about the family history until he was in college at Syracuse University and his father saw him reading Dreiser's novel.
"He said, 'If you don't tell your mother, I'll tell you a secret. That story's about grandma's sister.' I didn't believe it at first," he said. "But I can tell you, I was much more interested in the book after that."

War of the Year.
2006 marks the 800th anniversary of the beginning of Genghis Khan's attempt to impose his version of civilization on everybody else.
He came pretty darn close to succeeding.
Boston Globe: Amid unsettling times, Mongolians turn to Genghis Khan
Mongolians celebrated the 800th anniversary of Genghis Khan's march to world conquest yesterday with festivities that mixed commercialism with appeals to nationalism.
That could describe the 4th of July here. Do they have softball tourneys in Ulan Bator?
In the capital's Central Stadium, men dressed like warriors in Genghis Khan's 13th-century horde paraded on stout, brown horses. In one section of the grandstands, people held up cards to form images of the conqueror and the national flag. An actor played Genghis Khan in a white robe and head gear, riding a white horse to cheers from the crowd.
``We Mongolians must be united and have one goal: to develop our country. Remember Genghis Khan and his great deeds," said President Nambaryn Enkhbayar , who usually wears a suit but was dressed in a traditional gold and cream silk robe for the occasion.
Mongolians and their leaders are reveling in Genghis Khan, finding a source of identity at an unsettling time.
Sandwiched between a voracious China and an assertive Russia, Mongolia faces international challenges , while at home the democracy and free markets that followed communism's collapse in 1990 have created wealth for some but left a third of the 2.8 million people in poverty.
Bless and protect the free people of Mongolia, Lord.
The greatness of Genghis Khan is something that most Mongolians agree on.
``I feel so proud to have been born in the land of the Great Khan who conquered most of the world," said Tserendulam, a recently retired cook who was among 800 singers at the ceremony. Like many Mongolians, he uses one name.
There's one reason progress may be slow. If you say "Hey, Tserendulam!" in a business meeting, eight guys may answer "What?"
The anniversary marks Genghis Khan's unification of fractious Mongol tribes in 1206 -- an event that gave Mongolians a nascent national identity and set them on a course to forge an empire that stretched from the Pacific to Central Europe.
Though the celebrations will last a year, yesterday 's ceremony was timed for maximum public impact: the start of an annual festival of horse racing, archery, wrestling and camaraderie known as Naadam.
It's a time when the harsh weather of the steppe mellows for a brief summer as Mongolians enjoy themselves and politicians try to burnish their appeal.
Ah, they do have politicians. That will certainly retard progress.
Images of Genghis Khan, often as a wizened elder, have been plastered on billboards, etched in white stones on a mountainside and used to promote tourism. A rock opera of the conqueror's life, modeled on ``Jesus Christ Superstar," is being staged by a popular band.
Oy vey!
The government tore down mausoleums of a 20th-century nationalist hero and a communist dictator on Ulan Bator's central square this year to build a $5 million monument of Genghis Khan in bronze.
Yippee!
At yester day's ceremony, the president and audience sang a newly altered version of the national anthem. The revisions, made by the government in recent weeks, deleted references to the communist past and replaced them with allusions to Mongolian independence.
Amen to that.
In the rush to capitalize on his name, Genghis Khan's legacy as a brutal conqueror is being played down. Instead, he's being cast as an agent of world change, a visionary statesman who promoted low taxes on trade, diplomatic immunity and religious tolerance.
See, kiddies, Genghis Khan was a Reaganite.
``We are forefathers of globalization," says one government slogan.
This marshaling of Genghis Khan's legacy to promote national pride, and the money being spent, has prompted cries of waste and political manipulation from some in the elite.
Oops, I guess he was a neo-con.
Mongolian politics has grown divisive, with partisan bickering between Enkhbayar's Mongolian People's First Party, a successor to the old Communist Party, and a coalition of newer democratic parties.
``As a small country sandwiched between large nations, globalization is felt day to day and it's a pressing matter," Tsend Munkh-Orgil, a member of Mongolia's parliament and Enkhbayar's party, said Monday. He said Genghis Khan can help forge ``the national unity and national consensus" missing since democracy and capitalism emerged 15 years ago.

RedState.com: Disgusting:DCCC Uses Dead Soldiers to Raise Money (You can view the video here as well.)
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has a new fundraising pitch going out. It uses September 11th and our troops to raise money. But, instead of using those images to show Democrats would be tougher on terrorists and make America more secure, it uses pictures of dead soldiers in their flag draped coffins and the subtle threat of harm from September 11th to make a threat to the GOP. See the outrage for yourself here.
In an email from Rahm Emanuel, he links to a new video from the DCCC that shows the flag draped coffins of American soldiers and a standing gun supporting the helmet of one of our fallen -- images of dead American soldiers -- to raise money for the DCCC.
Likewise, the DCCC shows a doctored image of Tom DeLay's mug shot from Texas. The image now has a number at the bottom: 091108GOP. Is September 11, 2008, to be the day the GOP gets wiped out by Democrats? Of all the random sequences of numbers to use, are we really suppose to believe that 091108 is not suppose to have any connection to September 11th and the deaths of so many Americans -- especially after starting the video with the images of dead American soldiers?
This is outrageous. This is disgusting. This is why the Democrats must lose in November. They refuse to hold sacred the lives of American soldiers. Instead, their dead bodies are instruments of fundraising for the DCCC. But remember, we cannot question their patriotism.

Amen.

Religion of Peace and Love Update.
The cowardly, cretinous mohammedans murder a Christian woman in the name of their false god. Justice awaits them.
Crosswalk.com: Mob in Nigeria Stones Woman for Evangelizing
Church leaders here said Muslim extremists overwhelmed police officers providing refuge for an unidentified Christian woman in this town in Niger state on June 28 and stoned and clubbed her to death for doing street evangelism.
David Atabo of the Roman Catholic Church in Izom said he witnessed the killing of the woman. He told Compass that she had met a group of Muslim youths, shared the gospel with them and gave them some tracts to read.
“As soon as the woman left, some Muslim elders standing by sought to know from the youths what the woman told them,” Atabo said. “When they learned that the woman had preached to the youths, they claimed she insulted the prophet of Islam, Muhammad, and directed that the woman must be killed.”
They know their pathetic beliefs are no match for the Word of God, so they do everything they can to silence His messengers. There is a particularly nasty place in Hell reserved for these evildoers.
Atabo said the Muslim leaders’ allegations inspired hundreds of Muslims to pour into the streets to track down the woman. They caught up with her around the River Gurara area and started beating her, he said, but police rescued her.
Officers took the woman into protective custody at the Izom police station. But the restive mob stormed the premises, demanding that the woman be released to be stoned to death in accordance with sharia (Islamic) law or else they would burn down the police station.
“The police, realizing that the Muslim crowd was overwhelming, smuggled the woman through a back door to escape with her, but the Muslims blocked all escape routes, and at this point the police abandoned the woman to save their lives,” Atabo said. “She was clubbed to death.”
Police later moved the woman’s corpse to the mortuary at the Suleja Government Hospital. Atabo added that three policemen were injured in the fracas.
Mystery IdentityChristian leaders in Izom said they were disturbed that police have not identified the woman.
“This woman was killed before the police could identify her or even question her,” Atabo said. “We have also tried to find out which church she comes from, but without success.”
The area Christian leaders suspect the murdered woman might have come from neighboring Suleja town.
Atabo, chairman of the local chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Izom town, said the Muslims claimed that the Christian woman dropped a document containing derogatory remarks about Muhammad.
When he asked the police to allow him see the alleged document, though, “there was nothing like that,” he said.
Daniel Mazuri, pastor of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) Good News Church in Izom, said those at the scene of the incident told him Muslims accosted the woman and accused her of insulting Muhammad. The Muslims claimed she dropped a letter in a mosque insulting Muhammad, he said, but friends of his in the police force told him this was false.
“I believe the Muslims just wanted to ignite a religious crisis in this town,” Muzari told Compass. “This is a very unhealthy development, and it has now opened the door for unending religious conflicts.”
Mazuri said his inquiries led to the conclusion that Muslims doctored a document in order to create a religious crisis in this town.
“They are known for this attitude, and we are not surprised at the occurrence of this incident,” he said.
The Rev. Tanko Madaki of the ECWA, Hausa section, also concluded that Muslims planned the attack with the aim of igniting a religious crisis in the town.
“We are aware of the antics of the Muslims,” he said. “They are always good in fabricating falsehood and then anchoring their actions on such falsehood.”
Another FirstIt is common in Nigeria to find Christians engaged in street evangelism – preaching the gospel in marketplaces, buses and trains. Muslims are believed to constitute about half of the residents of Izom town, in the Gurara local government area.
The death of the unknown Christian woman marks the first fatality of Niger state’s Islamic legal system, introduced in 2000. Niger is one of the 12 states that has implemented sharia in northern Nigeria.
“We are hoping that the police will be able to unravel the identity of this woman eventually, or that any of her relations may contact us soon,” Atabo said.
There are nine churches in Izom town, including the Roman Catholic Church, the ECWA, All Christian Fellowship Mission, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Apostolic Church, the Baptist Church, and the Deeper Life Bible Church.

If we continue to give a damn about the Beatles, the slave traders win.
The Columbus Dispatch: Penny Lane won't be renamed
LONDON — Penny Lane will keep its name. Liverpool officials said last week they would modify a proposal to rename streets linked to the slave trade when they realized the road made famous by the 1967 Beatles song was one of them.

Ha! Don't Hold Your Breath! Headline of the Day.
Roto-Reuters: Republican says feds readying crackdown on leaks..
The Bush administration is preparing a crackdown on intelligence leaks to the media and will try to pursue prosecutions in some recent cases, the chairman of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee on Tuesday.
Michigan Republican Rep. Peter Hoekstra also suggested some unauthorized leaks could have been deliberate attempts to help al Qaeda.
"More frequently than what we would like, we find out that the intelligence community has been penetrated, not necessarily by al Qaeda, but by other nations or organizations," he said.
If only we had executed Jonathan Pollard and Sandy Berger...
"I don't have any evidence. But from my perspective, when you have information that is leaked that is clearly helpful to our enemy, you cannot discount that possibility," he added.
In recent months, two major intelligence operations were leaked to the media: the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program and the Treasury Department's tracking of international banking transactions.
"There will be a renewed effort by the Justice Department in a couple of these cases to go through the entire process ... so they can prosecute," Hoekstra said in a speech to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.
Justice Department officials were not immediately available for comment.
Hoekstra also said the newly-installed CIA director Michael Hayden was conducting aggressive internal investigations against leakers.

The evil that is Aztec Math.
Michelle Malkin exposes the totalitarian racists infesting the ranks of Americans of Mexican descent. Does anyone seriously believe the millions of illegal invaders from the south are going to be more "moderate" than this?
Top White House adviser Karl Rove traveled to Los Angeles this week to pay homage to the anti-immigration enforcement lobbying group for Latinos: the National Council of La Raza.
"La Raza" is Spanish for "The Race."
It's bad enough the White House lent its prestige to The Race's annual conference. But did you know the Bush administration has forked over millions of federal tax dollars directly to The Race?
According to GOP Rep. Charlie Norwood of Georgia, The Race snapped up $15.2 million in federal grants last year alone and more than $30 million since 1996. Undisclosed amounts went to get-out-the-vote efforts supporting La Raza political positions. The U.S. Department of Education funneled nearly $8 million in taxpayer grants to the group for a nationwide charter-schools initiative.
Among The Race's most infamous government-funded charter schools is La Academia Semillas del Pueblo, the Los Angeles public school that teaches "Aztec math" (ancient dot math is the new math) and the Mexican indigenous language of "Nahuatl." The ethnic separatist principal of the school, Marcos Aguilar, told a sympathetic UCLA interviewer:
We don't want to drink from a white water fountain; we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts. We don't need a white water fountain. ... We are not interested in what they have because
we have so much more and because the world is so much larger. And ultimately, the white way, the American way, the neo-liberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction."
That's the tip of the iceberg. I found dozens of other publicly subsidized charter schools sponsored by The Race and funded with our money, including:
Aztlan Academy in Tucson, Ariz. According to The Race, the school's success rests on "Aztlan's ability to integrate a meaningful Chicano Studies program into their lives, language and academics, as a means of developing their intellects as well as their pride and self-esteem." The school's name – a
reference to a mythical swath of the vast Southwestern U.S. expanse, which Latino activists claim is their rightful homeland and which they seek to reconquer for Mexico – says it all.
Mexicayotl Academy in Nogales, Ariz. Who needs the three Rs? At Mexicayotl, it's all about the three Ms: me, me, me! The school's program is "structured and developed around the concepts of identity, culture and language." Second mission: supporting local ethnic lobbying efforts "to right social injustices by educating the community and helping create social change." Under "greatest achievements," the school's website lists its participation in a "Peace and Dignity Run"; its visit from Rigoberta Menchu (the Marxist academic fraud from
Guatemala who lied her way to a Nobel Peace Prize); and its sponsorship of the local annual Dia de los Muertos (the Mexican holiday).
The Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School in Pueblo, Colo. It's named after the far-left Latina labor union activist who recently railed that "Republicans hate Latinos," praised illegal-alien marchers and screeched that "We didn't cross the
borders, the borders crossed us" in a hate-filled tirade before Arizona students.
Academia Cesar Chavez Charter School in St. Paul, Minn. Board of Directors member Louis Mendoza, an activist Chicano Studies professor, pushed the school to lobby for the federal DREAM Act (providing in-state tuition discounts to
illegal-alien students not available to legal non-residents). The school's website features one flag on its front page: the Mexican flag.
The White House will tell you that the National Council of The Race is a "moderate," mainstream civil-rights group. But there's nothing "moderate" about The Race's advocacy of driver's licenses and in-state tuition discounts for illegal aliens. Or its opposition to strengthening security for identity documents and improving cooperation on immigration enforcement between state, local and federal enforcement immigration officials. Or its all-out war on the House GOP's border security and enforcement-first bill passed last December.
President Bush pays lip service to immigration enforcement and assimilation, while the White House sends Karl Rove to make nice with the separatist leaders of The Race and the Bush Education Department showers our tax dollars on radical Reconquista schools. It doesn't add up.
Unless, of course, you're using Aztec math. (Thanks to WorldNetDaily for the heads up.)

Amen.

Future Hype : The Myths of Technology Change
by Bob Seidensticker
We’re not the first generation to feel overwhelmed by technology, not the first to rearrange our lives to accommodate technology, and not the first to ask ourselves if technology’s good outweighs its bad. Generations past have dealt with disruptions every bit as challenging and exciting as our own. Our awe of today’s technology isn’t unique—it isn’t even particularly substantial.
Today, progress is quick in a few areas and slower in all the rest, as it has been for centuries. The PC and Internet are indeed unprecedented—just like every other major technology before them. The clumsy exponential-growth model must be replaced by a more accurate paradigm.
Three decades ago, Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock created a sensation with its portrayal of technology spinning out of society’s control. Future Hype approaches the same topic but arrives at a very different conclusion: that the popular view of technology change is wrong and that the future won’t be so shocking.
Come see how technology change really works and how to better evaluate it, anticipate it, and control it.
“Future Hype takes us on a technological rollercoaster over a landscape of exaggerated promises and failed dreams. Required reading for journalists, teachers, business managers and, well, everybody else.”
— A. K. Dewdney, author of Beyond Reason and Yes, We Have No Neutrons

From The Hank Aaron Is Still My Home Run Champion Department:
AFP: Major League Baseball sees indictment coming for Bonds
Several senior figures in Major League Baseball expect Barry Bonds will be indicted by a San Francisco grand jury investigating the record-setting slugger, a US newspaper reported.
The New York Daily News, citing several unnamed major league sources in a Tuesday internet posting, said indictments for perjury and tax evasion could be issued by next week or the end of July against the
San Francisco Giants outfielder.
A grand jury looking into revelations stemming from the BALCO steroid scandal is scheduled to expire by the end of the month.
The Daily News said their sources had no inside information regarding the grand jury but anticipated that Bonds will be indicted, which would create a nightmare scenario for Major League Baseball during its usual late-season peak.
That expectation, the newspaper reported, came from information about Bonds uncovered in a secret investigation launched more than a year ago - well before former US Senator George Mitchell was named in April to lead an MLB-inquiry into doping allegations.

Mom? Mom?
I get both sides of this story...
I guess Mr. Siegel should be thankful his mother didn't have him killed. That's a better break than a lot of kids get.
WIS-TV: California man sentenced for stalking biological mother
A California man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for stalking the woman he discovered had given him up for adoption almost 40 years ago.
The woman is now a lawyer in New York. She testified that she didn't want to reunite with her son, who was conceived in a rape by her ex-fiance.
Roger Siegel learned his mother's identity in 2002 after persuading a court to unseal his adoption records. He then bombarded the woman with phone messages and faxes.
Siegel said at his sentencing Friday that he's been "deeply hurt" and was "looking for what was missing in his life - a mom, a family."

Is it just me, or does the Slave China regime seem scared witless of a Japan willing to fight?
I know this is gong to upset a lot of people, but I think it is time for Japan to re-arm. The chances are excellent we are going to have to do something about China sooner rather than later...
Roto-Reuters: China says Japan over-reacts with UN resolution
China condemned a Japan-sponsored U.N. resolution to slap sanctions on
North Korea over its missile tests on Tuesday, calling it an over-reaction that would split the Security Council.
The statement came as a top U.S. envoy flew into Beijing, seeking a briefing on China's urgent efforts to resolve the crisis by diplomatic means.
The U.N. Security Council delayed a vote overnight on the resolution to impose sanctions on the isolated state to allow time for a high-level Chinese delegation to talk to Pyongyang.
"The Chinese side thinks the concerned draft resolution is an over-reaction. If approved, it will aggravate contradictions and increase tension," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a news conference. "It will hurt efforts to resume six-party talks as well as lead to the U.N. Security Council splitting."
Chinese President Hu Jintao told visiting North Korean parliamentarian Yang Hyong Sop that China opposed any action that would stoke tension on the Korean peninsula. State media said he urged all parties to take steps conducive to peace and stability.
Senior U.S. diplomat Christopher Hill, Washington's top man on North Korea, arrived back in the Chinese capital on Tuesday.
"We have the DPRK (North Korea) which, instead of coming to the six-party process, is firing off missiles of all shapes and sizes, missiles that are aimed at not just us but countries in the region," Hill told reporters at his hotel.
He said that he hoped to meet Chinese officials later on Tuesday, that he wanted to see what "kind of leverage" Beijing had over Pyongyang and that he hoped for progress in bringing North Korea back to the six-party talks on its nuclear program.
"At this point, the jury is still out, we don't know what the DPRK wants to do."
TALKS IN PYONGYANG
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei was still in North Korea, the spokeswoman said, contradicting earlier Korean media reports that he had returned home. Vice Premier Hui Liangyu flew to North Korea on Monday for a six-day visit.
"The problems cannot be resolved in one or two trips and solely through diplomatic efforts by the Chinese side," the spokeswoman said.
A State Department official said on Sunday Washington believed it had the backing in the 15-member council for the resolution to pass. Veto-wielding China opposes sanctions.

Smells like goat rapists...
...but if I was a Tamil mass-murderer, I'd do it the same way...
AP: 8 bombs on India commuter trains kill 147
Eight bombs hit Bombay's commuter rail network during rush hour Tuesday evening, killing at least 147 people and wounding more than 400 in what authorities called a well-coordinated terrorist attack.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility in the bombings, which came in quick succession — a common tactic employed by Kashmiri militants. The blasts came hours after a series of grenade attacks by Islamic extremists killed eight people in the main city of India's part of
Kashmir.
India's major cities were put on high alert. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called an emergency Cabinet meeting and said that "terrorists" were behind the attacks.
Pakistan, India's rival over the disputed territory of Kashmir, quickly condemned the bombings.
As they should. But that government does not speak for all Pakistanis.
Chaos engulfed the crowded rail network in India's financial capital following the blasts that ripped apart densely packed carriages on trains that police said had either pulled into stations or were traveling between them. Doors and windows were blown off the train cars, and witnesses said body parts were strewn on the ground.
After meeting with his Cabinet, Maharashtra state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Tuesday night that the death toll was 147, with another 439 wounded.
Deshmukh, the state's top elected official, also corrected initial reports of seven blasts, saying there had actually been eight, including two at one station.
Authorities struggled to treat survivors and recover the dead in the wreckage amid heavy monsoon downpours, and the effort continued into the night. Survivors clutched bandages to their heads and faces, and some frantically dialed their cell phones. Luggage and debris were spattered with blood.
There was no immediate indication if suicide bombers were involved. Police inspector Ramesh Sawant said most of the victims suffered head and chest injuries, leading authorities to believe the bombs were placed in overhead luggage racks.
Hmmmm...
Smarter than average goat rapists, perhaps?
"I can't hear anything," said Shailesh Mhate, a man in his 20s, sitting on the floor of Veena Desai Hospital surrounded by bloody cotton swabs. "People around me didn't survive. I don't know how I did."
Another man, bloody bandages over his eyes, held out a phone to a nurse, begging her to call his wife and tell her he was OK.
In Washington, the State Department said it had no information about whether there were any American casualties.
Commuter transit systems have been tempting targets for terrorists in recent years, with bombers killing 191 in Madrid, Spain, in 2004, and 52 in London last year.
A senior Bombay police official, P.S. Pasricha, said the Bombay explosions were part of a well-coordinated attack. Vilasrao Deshmukh, the chief minister of Maharashtra state, where Bombay is located, said bombs had caused all the explosions.
Police reportedly carried out raids across the country following the Bombay blasts. One TV station said a suspect was in custody.
Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil told reporters that authorities had had some information that an attack was coming, "but place and time was not known."
The bombings occurred after the stock markets ended. The commercial capital suffered similar serial blasts in 1993 that included the Bombay Stock Exchange, killing more than 250 people.
Tuesday evening's first explosion hit a train at a railway station in the northwestern suburb of Khar, said a police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
Other blasts followed down the line of the western railway at the Mahim, Bandra, Matunga, Borivili, Mira Road and Jogeshwari stations. Some passengers reportedly jumped from speeding trains in panic.
India's CNN-IBN television news, which had a reporter aboard one train, said a blast struck a first-class compartment as the train was moving, ripping through the compartment and killing more than a dozen people.
The Press Trust of India, citing railway officials, said all the blasts had hit first-class cars.
Class envy? Class warfare? I don't remember if this happened in the Spanish train attack.
Pranay Prabhakar, the spokesman for the Western Railway, said all train service had been suspended and appealed to the public to stay away from stations in the city of 16 million people — India's principal port on the Arabian Sea.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars since the subcontinent was partitioned upon independence from Britain in 1947, two over Kashmir.
Dozens of militant groups have been fighting Indian rule in Kashmir, demanding the mostly Muslim region's independence, or its merger with Pakistan.
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry late Tuesday strongly condemned the Bombay attacks.
Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf offered condolences over the loss of life, the Foreign Ministry said, adding: "Terrorism is a bane of our times and it must be condemned, rejected and countered effectively and comprehensively."
The General is a thug, but he's our thug. (For the most part.) There are worse alternatives. Much worse.
New Delhi has accused Pakistan of training, arming and funding the militants. Islamabad insists it only offers the rebels diplomatic and moral support.
Accusations of Pakistani involvement in a 2001 attack on India's parliament put the nuclear-armed rivals on the brink of a fourth war. But since then, Pakistan and India embarked on a peace process aimed at resolving their differences, including their conflicting claims to all of Jammu-Kashmir.
In Washington, two U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the events were still unfolding said it was too early to know for certain what group was behind the attacks. But both officials said they were likely part of the sectarian violence over Kashmir.
One of the officials said the attacks' coordinated nature and their targeting of trains at peak travel times match the modus operandi of two Islamic extremist groups that have been active in India during the last several years: Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, or Army of the Righteous, and Jaish-e-Mohammad, or Army of Mohammed.
The U.S. government has designated both groups as terrorist organizations and considers them affiliates of al-Qaida.

Hey, John Kerry! Where's the missle defense that's gonna protect us from your creepy commie buddies?
From Human Events Online:
'Star Wars' Critics Stay Silent
by Robert B. Bluey
A day after Human Events editorialized in favor of a comprehensive missile-defense system comes a hard-hitting editorial from the Washington Examiner that asks, "Where are ‘Star Wars’ critics now?
"It's an important question to ponder, and as the Examiner puts it:
Noticeably absent are the voices of those who, since President Reagan first proposed such a system in 1984, have fought development and deployment of the missile defense system the U.S. must now depend upon in dealing with North Korea. These folks have claimed over and over that the system they derisively call “Star Wars” can’t possibly work, would be too expensive, would incite a new world arms race, etc., etc. Names that come to mind in this regard include senators like Joe Biden, D-Del., Jack Reed, D-R.I., Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., Ted
Kennedy, D-Mass., and Carl Levin, D-Mich., and the Clinton-Gore administration that delayed and dilly-dallied with work on missile defense for most of the ’90s.
Kudos to the Examiner for calling out these senators -- as well as the bad decisions made by Clinton and Gore in the 1990s. As we learn more about North Korea's failed test -- that the missiles were actually aimed at Hawaii -- it's growing more apparent that the Democrats' policies of yesteryear could literally put our country at risk today. Remember that this November when you head to the polls to vote.

Buffett and Gates use their billions to prop up whitey and slaughter the subhumans.
So...You thought old Fyodor was a bit of a crank, eh? How could a pro-business conservative call men like Warren "Bufu" Buffett and Bill "Kill all the brutes!" Gates muderers and racists?
I won't apologize for calling a spade a spade.
Well, I am not the only one, kiddies...
Human Events Online: Gates-Buffett Marriage Designed Not to Bear Fruit
by Joseph A. D'Agostino
Posted Jul 10, 2006
Two fanatically anti-people billionaires—the two richest men in the world—have announced that they will combine their enormous fortunes into one charitable foundation. Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway plans to give securities currently valued at about $37 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has already had its coffers swollen to $29 billion by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
The poor Ford Foundation, once the world’s largest, has only $11 billion. Gates has even let slip that the motivation behind reproductive health programs is actually population control, as PRI has argued for years (see below). Both men are dedicated to population control in the Third World, and now they have created an unfathomably large organization that will join the United Nations, the U.S. government, the European Union, and many private organizations in continuing the disastrous effort to reduce the Earth’s population.
An exagerration? Hardly. As readers of this column know very well, population control has been a huge success in almost every corner of the world. Birthrates have dropped dramatically in the past few decades and continue downward. Not only developed countries, but now many Third World countries have birthrates below replacement level. In a few years, most Third World nations will have socially suicidal birthrates, not having enough children to maintain their populations in the long term. Even Latin America, once the region of large Catholic families, has a birthrate of only 2.4 today, down from 4.5 just 30 years ago. Mexico’s is already below replacement, which is generally reckoned at about 2.1 children per woman in her lifetime. Most Third World nations now face rapid population aging over the next few decades and a dearth of young people to work and pay taxes, just as First World nations do—but without First World nations’ wealth or social security systems. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region of the world that still has consistenly high birthrates, and it needs them to replace populations decimated by wars, famines, and epidemics such as AIDS.
So why are the world’s elites still so bent on population control? Why aren’t they trying to prevent continued falling birthrates and massive population aging instead? This is, I think, a spiritual question.
Maybe it is a racial question...
Come to think of it, real racism is a spiritual problem too.
In any case, the Associated Press and some other media picked up on the dismay of pro-life organizations when Buffett announced his gift. AP quoted PRI and some other pro-life groups which, instead of hailing this tremendous foundation gift, had to criticize it. Both Buffett and the Gates Foundation have a long history of subsidizing abortion and population control. Claiming the money is for services other than abortion, the Gates Foundation gives millions to Planned Parenthood. But I called this position dishonest, because giving money to one wing of an organization frees up funds to be used for other activities—in this case, for abortions.
Someone who read my comments e-mailed me the following:
“I was disgusted and sickened by your comments regarding the Gates Foundation. Your comment that the foundation’s position ‘is simply dishonest’ shows your ignorance,” he wrote. “This foundation is one of the best organizations at helping people, yet you attack them. This blatant attack is just yet another example of the extremism inherent in the anti-abortion movement.
Your group does nothing but attempt to take choices away from women. Who made you (and POP) the decision-makers? I am well-educated and completely able to make my own decisions without your input. Instead of focusing on making the world change to your personal view, why not look inward and stop the hate you have for others.”
Sound familiar, kiddies?
Love Is Hate. Peace Is War. Et cetera.
First of all, let me acknowledge that the Gates Foundation does much good work. It funds research into disease eradication and many legitimate Third World health programs. In addition, it funds educational alternatives to our utterly catastrophic public school system, even venturing into school choice programs. But when a foundation also subsidizes the killing of unborn children and the ongoing destruction of Third World societies, it is not extremism to condemn it, even if such activities account for a relatively small part of the foundation’s funding.
How small? It’s difficult to say, since so much money spent on reproductive health and HIV prevention (condoms) has the effect of reducing population. But certainly, there is plenty of evidence of the anti-people inclinations of Gates and Buffett. And it’s especially shameful that Gates uses the profits from his near-monopoly on business operating systems to fund abortion. Large numbers of pro-life people are forced to buy his products. Why can’t Gates restrict himself to funding charitable activities that everyone can agree on?
“The one issue that really grabbed me as urgent were issues related to population… reproductive health,” Gates told PBS “Now” interviewer Bill Moyers, May 9, 2003 (all ellipses in original PBS transcript). “And maybe the most interesting thing I learned is this thing that’s still surprising when I tell other people which is that, as you improve health in a society, population growth goes down. You know I thought it was…before I learned about it, I thought it was paradoxical. Well if you improve health, aren’t you just dooming people to deal with such a lack of resources where they won’t be educated or they won’t have enough food?
You know, sort of a Malthusian view of what would take place.” So it would seem that Gates favors reproductive health programs, and maybe health programs in general, because they reduce population—exactly the argument against reproductive health programs that PRI makes (we’re not against health programs in general). Gates added, “My dad was head of Planned Parenthood.”
Ah...Planned Babykilling (A subsidiary of Big Babykilling)...that would explain it...
You see, kiddies, little Billy Gates has known for decades he was just lucky not to have been murdered by his parents, who must have been left-fascist thugs of the most vile sort. So, he uses his hard-earned billions (which no doubt fill him with all kinds of guilt) to kill the teeming masses of wogs "over there" who threaten little Billy's air, water, and food supply. (I don't know if the Freudians would buy my analysis, but it does make sense out of Citizen Gates' public statements.)
Gates has put his money where his mouth is. His foundation gave $2.25 million to Johns Hopkins to train Third World experts in population control in 1997. In 1998, his foundation—which is controlled by Gates, his wife, and his father—gave $1.7 million to a United Nations Population Fund program for controlling population growth.
As for that cur, Buffet, it seems he just hates "the Other"...
Buffett has given millions to pro-abortion and population control efforts over the years, and has even funded the anti-Catholic Catholics for a Free Choice. But how much of a priority is it for him? Reported the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Nov. 13, 1997, about his wife’s foundation, “One of the foundation’s directors, Mr. Buffett’s daughter, Susie, told The Chronicle that she did expect that population control would be the foundation’s top priority. ‘That’s what my father has always believed was the biggest and most important issue, so that will be the focus,’ she said. ‘I feel as his child that it’s important to carry out his wishes. It’s his money.’”
In fact, the foundation, named after Buffett’s late wife Susan, funded clinical trials of the RU-486 abortion pill in the 1990s. Helping to create a whole new way to kill children—that’s commitment.
May God have mercy on your souls, you black-hearted ghouls. And your enablers, too.
There is no telling how much Buffett will end up giving to the Gates Foundation. He intends to give 5% a year, and his overall fortune could continue to grow year-by-year despite these gifts. It could be much more than $37 billion.
Obviously, this could be a SEX IS DEATH story...
Buffett helped launch the human pesticide, RU-486. The Gates Foundation is working on its own sinister plans. On its website is an article by Gates’ wife Melinda that first appeared in Newsweek, May 15, 2006. Here, not only the anti-people agenda but the feminist agenda is on display.
“For many women, marriage is a risk factor for AIDS (Emphasis mine.) because of their husbands’ dangerous behavior,” she wrote. “Worldwide, 80% of women newly infected with HIV are practicing monogamy within a marriage or a long-term relationship. This shatters the myth that marriage is a natural refuge from AIDS.... Through our foundation, my husband, Bill, and I are working to develop tools that can put the power to prevent AIDS into the hands of women. Microbicides are one exciting new prevention tool in development.
These are colorless, odorless gels that a woman could apply vaginally—without her partner’s knowledge—to prevent sexual transmission of HIV. Microbicides may also prevent other sexually transmitted infections, such as syphilis and gonorrhea, and some act as contraceptives as well.”
Notice that last clause. “Contraceptives.” And, without their husbands’ knowledge—driving yet another wedge between family members in a world bent on driving wedges between them. And will the women be told that the microbicide gels they receive contain contraceptives, or will they be deceived by their government-run “reproductive health” programs as women in Peru, Mexico, China, the Philippines, Africa, and countless other places have already been?
The lesson here? Ladies, don't let creepy little white wimps put things in your body. And run away if they say "It's good for you.
Given the odds against transmitting HIV through normal heterosexual intercourse, such microbidices will likely do little to prevent the spread of HIV, though they could assist against other diseases. Wouldn’t America and Europe be suffering from a heterosexual AIDS epidemic if it were otherwise? The source of the African AIDS epidemic lies elsewhere, such as in the reuse of needles in the poorly run reproductive health clinics set up all over Africa with First World money.
Warren Buffett’s biographer, Roger Lowenstein, has written that Buffett once—still does?—had “a Malthusian dread that overpopulation would aggravate problems in all other areas—such as food, housing, even human survival.” Malthusian, the same attitude as Gates.
So, the so-called capitalists are afraid of the ultimate capital, humanity? It sounds like Gates and Buffett are nothing but small-minded jerks who are only interested in jealously guarding their wealth while everyone else be damned.
"Can't let some darkie become rich enough to buy and sell us, can we Warren?"
"No, Bill. We certainly can't. Let's not take any chances. Let's stop the non-Aryans from procreating."
"Exxxxxxxxcellent."
The Anglican Rev. Thomas Malthus predicted in the late 18th Century that human population growth would outpace food production increases, thus leading to massive famines and death. Other, similar doomsayers have made similar predictions. Of course, it’s more than 200 years later, the Earth’s human population has growth enormously, and none of these predictions has ever come true. But for some reason, smart men such as Gates and Buffett continue to believe.
That last paragraph is what is known as a statement of empirical fact, kiddies. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

George Will celebrates the destruction of America.
As with most (easily more than half) men who claim the title "conservative", Mr. Will is actually interested in power. The Interstate Highway System is a tool used by social engineers to rip apart America's natural communities and neighborhoods that were based on family, ethnicity, and religion. If ol' Georgie was truly conservative, he would gnash his teeth and lament the concrete ghettoization of his nation. (sorry)
But Will is not a conservative by any meaningful measure of the word. The IHS is classic totalitarian politics - divide and conquer. People who have similar interests must be separated from each other so they cannot vote in blocs, like, oh...I don't know...like Catholics might! Then they are easier to control.
Don't fool yourself. "Conservatives" like George Will love control as much as Stalin did, as long as they are in power.
BTW, when Ike saw what the socialist social engineers had done with the IHS, he regretted ever having approved the idea.
New Hampshire Union Leader: Fifty years of high-speed progress
On Tuesday, the United States will become more geographically stable than it has ever been. It will have been 17,126 days since the admission of Hawaii to statehood on Aug. 21, 1959. The longest previous span between expansions of the nation was the 17,125 days between the admission of Arizona on Feb. 14, 1912, and the admission of Alaska on Jan. 3, 1959. Since then the nation has become, in a sense, smaller through the annihilation of distance and, to some extent, of difference.
An important part of the groundwork — literally, it covered a lot of ground — for today’s America was begun 50 years ago this summer. A conservative Republican President, who grew up in a Kansas town where hitching posts for horses lined unpaved streets, launched what was, and remains, the largest public works project in the nation’s history — the Interstate Highway System. Its ribbons of concrete represent a single thread of continuity through the nation’s history.
With that program, Dwight Eisenhower, the 13th Republican President, helped heal the wounds of the war won by another general, U.S. Grant, the second Republican President. That war was related to “internal improvements,” as infrastructure projects such as roads and canals used to be called.
In 1816, South Carolina’s Rep. John Calhoun — then a nationalist; later, a disunionist — introduced legislation for a federal program of internal improvements. The legislation passed, but President James Madison vetoed it because he thought Congress was not constitutionally empowered to do such things. So, prosperous Northern states built their own improvements while the South sank into inferiority and increasing dependence on slavery.
The military handicap of an inferior transportation system was one reason the South lost the Civil War.
Another reason was the industrialization of the North. Its transportation system (the Erie Canal, railroads) cut the price of shipping a ton of wheat from Buffalo to New York City from $100 to $10, and the difference between the wholesale price of pork in Cincinnati and New York plunged from $9.53 to $1.18. Suddenly, workers flooding into the North’s cities had more disposable income to spend on the North’s manufactured goods.
The first Republican President began his public life as a 23-year-old candidate for the Illinois General Assembly by telling voters of Sangamon County his “sentiments with regard to local affairs,” the first sentiment being “the public utility of internal improvements.” The vigor of the union also was a preoccupation of Teddy Roosevelt, the eighth Republican President, whose great internal improvement, the Panama Canal, was external, although he thought of Panama as America’s private property. And Eisenhower’s message to Congress advocating the IHS began, “Our unity as a nation is sustained by free communication of thought and by easy transportation of people and goods.”
No legislator more ardently supported the IHS than the Tennessee Democrat who was chairman of the Senate Public Works subcommittee on roads.
His state had benefited handsomely from the greatest federal public works project of the pre-war period, the Tennessee Valley Authority, which, by bringing electrification to a large swath of the South, accelerated the closing of the regional development gap that had stubbornly persisted since the Civil War. This senator who did so much to put postwar America on roads suitable to bigger, more powerful cars was Al Gore Sr.
His son may consider this marriage of concrete and the internal combustion engine sinful, but Tennessee’s per capita income, which was just 70 percent of the national average in 1956, today is 90 percent.
The IHS — combined, as Fortune magazine’s Justin Fox writes, with another bright idea from 1956, the shipping container — made America’s distribution system more flexible. This benefited manufacturers, foreign and domestic, especially in America’s hitherto lagging region, the South.
This is one reason there is a thriving Southern-based automobile industry (BMW in South Carolina; Mercedes in Alabama; Honda in both Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama; Toyota in Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky).
Furthermore, the South is home to some of today’s “big box” retailers — Wal-Mart (Bentonville, Ark.), Home Depot (Atlanta) — as well as FedEx (Memphis).
American scolds blame the IHS and the automobile for everything from obesity (fried food at every interchange) to desperate housewives (isolated in distant suburbs without sidewalks). Nikita Khrushchev, during his 1959 visit to America, told Eisenhower, “Your people do not seem to like the place where they live and always want to be on the move going someplace else.” Eisenhower knew that wherever people are going on their nation’s roads, they are going where they live.
I'd rather be a scold who's on the side of the angels, Georgie boy. You're just a shill for power-madness.

Corporal Ryan Cummings USMC, Requiescat in pace.
From President Bush's press conference on July 7, 2006:
There's been a lot of sacrifice in the war on terror. People have lost lives. We have lost, obviously, a lot of lives here on the homeland, and we've lost lives overseas.
I think of Corporal Ryan Cummings from right here in the
Chicago area. He was an honor student at Hoffman Estates High School. He volunteered for the United States Marine Corps.
He served two tours of duty in Iraq, and then he volunteered for a third. Ryan understood the stakes. He understood that we must win. And so he said, I'd like to go back. And he was killed in Anbar province last month.
Our prayers go out to Ryan's family. I marvel at the strength of his mother when she said, "He wanted to be doing something that made a difference. He was doing what he wanted to do."
I have confidence in the capacity of liberty to transform hostile
regions to peaceful regions. And I have confidence in our capacity to win the war on terror, because of people like Ryan Cummings are willing to step up and serve this nation.
From CBS 2 in Chicago:
During his nationally-televised news conference, the president remembered a Marine from the Chicago area killed in Iraq.
CBS 2 West Suburban Bureau Chief Mike Puccinelli spoke with the Marine's mother about what the president had to say.
He served two tours in Iraq, and then he volunteered for a third.
But Ryan Cummings never made it home from that last tour. He was killed by a roadside bomb last month.
His mother watched from her home in Northwest Suburban Streamwood as the president paid tribute to her son.
"I'm grateful that he recognized Ryan and his sacrifice," Jan Cummings said.
Jan Cummings agrees with Bush's position that now is not the time to leave Iraq.
"It was a job that Ryan believed in, and I think knowing that we're going to stay until we're done, it makes Ryan's sacrifice more meaningful. It helps to ease my pain a little bit," Jan said.
This mother's words put Cindy Seahag to shame.
As Ryan rests in peace, his mother has some measure of peace knowing that he died doing what he loved.
Ryan was a straight-A student at Hoffman Estates High School, but instead of choosing college he chose the Marines.
In her last conversation with Ryan on Mother's Day, Ryan told her he intended to become an engineer.
Now, his mother is left to think about what might have been and what she'd say to her 22-year-old son if she could.
"We all miss you and we love you," she said. "And can you believe how many people there are whose lives you touched?"
Ryan made an impact on people like a grieving mom in Streamwood, as well as the President of the United States.

US Military Meets or Exceeds Recruiting Goals.
I wonder how deeply the Old Gray Whore decided to bury this one?
NYT: Military Recruiting Successful
The Army surpassed its recruiting goal for June, the Pentagon said, the 13th consecutive month the service has met or exceeded its target. The Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps also met or exceeded their goals, Defense Department statistics showed. The active-duty Army, which offered a wider array of financial incentives for potential recruits and put more recruiters on the street, found 8,756 recruits in June, compared with its target of 8,600, the Pentagon said.
Judging from its length, (You just read the whole thing.) I'd say they crammed it into their classifieds section between Rent-A-Sodomite ads.

Rachel Carson - deadlier than Stalin?
The quest of honest scientists and interested laymen (like Your Humble Servant) to destroy the lies of this ignorant cow who is responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of poor people of color continues apace.
The bottom line, kiddies? The lives of all the animals that have ever lived are not worth as much a single human life, not even the most evil and depraved human life. Not even Hitler's.
Bring on the glorious DDT! Save the baby humans!
From Robert Matthews of The First Post:
Her ideology has led to more deaths than Stalin's purges, and brought misery to hundreds of millions more. But now, over 40 years after her death, her grip on the fate of countless developing nations may finally be at an end.
As the founder of the modern ecological movement, the American naturalist Rachel Carson is not an obvious candidate for the pantheon of evil. Her best-selling book Silent Spring, published in 1963, is widely credited with putting the interconnectedness of nature on the political agenda, and led to international bans on the use of the pesticide DDT, which she claimed was causing ecological disaster. Yet while her actions may have been motivated by the best of intentions, the consequences in human terms have been catastrophic. The ban on DDT robbed developing nations of a cheap, safe and effective means of combating malaria, which kills two million people each year.
That tots up to at least 50 million deaths since the bans took effect in the early 1970s. And for what? Even at the time, Carson's claims that DDT was responsible for everything from the thinning of eggshells to cancer in humans looked shaky. By the mid-1980s they had been utterly discredited. Yet by then Carson's claims had achieved the status of holy writ among environmentalists - and among right-on officials in government ministries. Third World nations were threatened with trade sanctions if they even suggested using DDT in fields or homes.
Now, finally, the giant US Agency for International Development is supporting the widespread use of DDT in Africa to combat malaria. The effect is likely to be quite simply breathtaking, for DDT is truly a miracle cure for this deadly mosquito-borne scourge. When it was first used in developing nations in the early 1960s the effect was like flicking a switch. In 1948, Sri Lanka had 2.8 millioncases of malaria; in 1963, following the introduction of DDT, the number had fallen to just 17.
Tragically, the effect of the bans on its use in the wake of Carson's claims were no less dramatic. Within just five years of banning DDT, the number of malaria cases in Sri Lanka had risen from those 17 cases back up to 500,000. Today, around 400 million people are infected each year.
The economic impact of reintroducing DDT is likely to be no less impressive. According to the UN, malaria costs Africa around £7 billion annually - about 40 per cent of what the continent spends on health.
In years to come, the ban on DDT will be seen for what it is: a scandalous example of half-baked ecological concerns being put above the needs of humans. That realisation will come too late for the tens of millions who paid for this folly with their lives. (Thanks to the conservatives' favorite serial adulterer and Viagra addict for the heads up.)

Amen.

SEX IS DEATH. (Mind control = womb control)
I came to Carthage, where I found myself in the midst of a hissing cauldron of lusts. I had not yet fallen in love, but I was in love with the idea of it, and this feeling that something was missing made me despise myself for not being more anxious to satisfy the need. I began to look around for some object for my love, since I badly wanted to love something. —St. Augustine, Confessions
Ironically, this lunacy appeared in the Health section of the paper...
The birth control divide
Poor and uneducated women have higher rates of unplanned pregnancy. But why?
By Stephanie Simon of the LA Times
The students were giggling, trading gossip, but they stopped when Maria Elena Chavez dumped her stash of teaching aides on the table: Cola-flavored condoms. A cervical cap. An IUD. A diaphragm.
As the room quieted, Chavez unrolled a condom and stretched it over her hand.
"Many men will say they don't fit, but you can see how much this can stretch," she said. The students nodded, murmuring in surprise. One hand shot up, then another.
"Do they come in different sizes?"
"Should we put water in them first, to test them?"
"Can you use two at once for extra protection?"
These students in East L.A. were not inexperienced teens. They were women in their 30s and 40s, many of them married, all of them mothers — and, yet, still uncertain how to protect themselves from pregnancy. (Emphasis mine.)
They are far from alone.
A new statistical analysis, published this month, shows that poor and uneducated women have fallen farther behind their more affluent peers in their ability to control fertility and plan childbearing.
The nation's overall rate of unintended pregnancies held steady from the mid-1990s through 2001, the most recent year such data is available. But that stability masked huge disparities between demographic groups, according to the new analysis by the Guttmacher Institute, a research group affiliated with Planned Parenthood.
Teenagers, college graduates and women in the middle or upper class dramatically reduced unintended pregnancy and abortion rates. Among poor women, though, the unplanned pregnancy rate jumped nearly 30%.
As a result, poor women are now four times more likely to face an unintended pregnancy than those who are better off. They're also three times more likely to get an abortion.
Analysts at the Guttmacher Institute blame the problem largely on a lack of access to affordable contraception. Prominent Democrats echo that theme, arguing that the nation has a moral responsibility to improve access, both to ensure women's health and to bring down the abortion rate.
Ha! Abortion is contraception to Big Babykilling and The Party of Blasphemy, Buggery, and 'Bortion. Planned Babykilling isn't going to choke (sorry) off its main source of income. (After your tax dollars, that is.)
"We have to make sure families have more options," said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "If you don't have the resources … they don't get the services."
But public health experts say more funding is not necessarily the answer.
Ooooooh! Throw the Christian Nazis a bone! Tell us how, all-knowing and all-seeing antique media.
California spends $124 on family planning for every woman in need, more than any other state except South Carolina and Alabama. The state's Family PACT program offers teens and low-income couples easy access to free or affordable birth control. Yet California has one of the highest abortion rates in the country — the same rate as Nevada, which spends only $32 per woman in need, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
Nebraska presents the opposite scenario. The Guttmacher Institute ranks it worst in the nation at helping poor women avoid unintended pregnancies. Yet Nebraska has one of the country's lowest abortion rates.
Hmmm...That's downright counter-intuitive to a leftist.
On a national level, the jump in unplanned pregnancies came even as the federal government began offering to cover 90% of the cost if states would subsidize birth control for low-income women through Medicaid. At least 23 states, including California, have set up such programs. Details vary, but most offer exams and contraception to women earning up to twice the federal poverty level.
Here comes the mind control portion of the program, kiddies...
Former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher applauds such subsidies, but warns that free birth control alone won't bring down the unintended pregnancy rate. He calls instead for broad social change: Low-income women must build self-esteem and confidence in a better future. Only then, he said, will they be motivated to protect themselves. "To gain control of these issues, you really have to get beyond sex," said Satcher, who worked in the Clinton administration. "You have to dig deep and look at what's happening in their lives, their relationships and their minds." (All emphasis mine.)
You see, kiddies, these women are just too stupid to appreciate the sublime benefits of filling their bodies with the latest gimcrack inventions of Big Pharmaceutical. But don't worry, our world is filled to overflowing with morally and intellectually superior busybodies just dying to teach 'em up right.
Laura Gaydos came to a similar conclusion after holding recent focus groups with low-income women of all ages and races in cities across Georgia. A health researcher at Emory University in Atlanta, Gaydos said many of the women she interviewed simply didn't see the urgency in going out of their way to prevent pregnancy. "There's never going to be a perfect time to get pregnant," she heard again and again. And: "Might as well let what happens, happen."
There you have it. The Socially Backward Elements must be re-educated so their values will fall into line with that of The Party. And modernity.
The bottom line? Poor chicks just don't know how to date.
I can just imagine The Next-to-Final Solution for this problem. Like something out of A Clockwork Orange, poor women all over the world will be strapped to chairs with their eyelids wired open and forced to watch Sex and the City reruns until the accept the historical necessity of being nulliparous.
Even when low-income women take the initiative to pick up birth control, they are often ambivalent about using it — or too disorganized to remember. Nearly half of all women who get abortions say they used birth control at some point during the month they conceived. In some cases it failed. In many others, they just didn't use it correctly or consistently.
"To get people to use contraceptives is an effort," said Cynthia Harper, an assistant professor at the Center for Reproductive Health Research and Policy at UC San Francisco. "It's really hard for people to take care of themselves in the area of sexuality."
They fear the birth control pill will make them fat, so they stop taking it. The patch irritates their skin, so they peel it off. They put a half-hearted faith in one of the many urban myths that pass from friend to neighbor: If a man drinks enough Mountain Dew before sex, his sperm will die. If a woman takes a bath, or jumps around, or douches with vinegar, she won't conceive.
Chavez runs through several of those myths during her two-hour class in an East L.A. elementary school. It's part of a six-month program — Promotoras Comunitarias — sponsored by Planned Parenthood. Taught in Spanish, the class trains Latinas to be health educators for their neighborhoods, with sessions on domestic violence, prenatal care and sexuality. The idea is to empower the women to push for healthier habits in their families and their communities.
Planned Babykilling thinks there is still much too much Catholicism in those Spanish-speaking babes.
During the session on contraception, Alicia Mendoza, 32, understood for the first time why she had conceived her son just a few months after giving birth to her daughter.
She had figured she couldn't get pregnant again so soon, but her teacher told her firmly that wasn't true; even nursing a baby would not fully protect her. "No one told me I had to be careful," Mendoza said. (Emphasis mine.)
Many of the students had never heard of newer forms of birth control such as the ring and the patch. Even more common methods drew quizzical stares: When Chavez held up a vaginal suppository filled with spermicide, one student looked at the large white capsule with alarm. "Where do you put it?" she asked.
"You don't swallow it, if that's what you mean," Chavez said, laughing. Patiently, she explained — then took question after question:
"Does it hurt?" "Does it protect you from disease?" "If you use it often, does it make you infertile?"
Hey, wait a minute...Why no answer to that last one, babykiller?
Planned Parenthood runs similar programs in Arizona, Colorado, New York and Texas. Overall, however, the organization and its affiliates devote just 30% of a $49-million educational budget to women 20 and older. The rest is aimed at teens.
Instant translation: "Blacks and browns must not be allowed to reproduce so that Aryans may continue to run the world." - Margaret Sanger
The federal government too, focuses most of its sex education resources on teens, with a strong emphasis on abstinence.
Though women 20 and up account for nearly 80% of all unintended pregnancies, "you'll find almost no intervention or prevention programs targeted at older women," Gaydos said.
In part, that's because such programs tend to get tangled in ideological disputes. Though liberals urge more classes and cheaper birth control, some conservatives warn that expanded access will only encourage reckless behavior.
This spring in Missouri, for instance, state Rep. Susan Phillips shot down a proposal to subsidize birth control for low-income women. That would be like subsidizing promiscuity, she argued.
Phillips, a Republican, explained by e-mail: "It is my hope that reducing access to contraception for recreational users and those not prepared to parent will give them time to consider the consequences" of having sex.
That "sex has consequences" message is pushed on teens through TV shows, magazines, movies and schools; some experts say it's time to extend that campaign to adults as well.
"People don't worry about problems they don't know exist," said Sarah Brown, director of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
Your Humble Servant has an easy fix for this one, kiddies. In fact, I was shocked the educated woman from the LA Times and the various and sundry big-brained agents of Big Babykilling quoted in the article did not mention it:
Get married, stay married, and do not cheat on your spouse.

Fyodor's Badass Mexican-American Character Actor of the Day.
Danny Trejo
You've seen him in Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, Con-Air, Reindeer Games, Spy Kids, and many other films. (Seriously, he must make twenty movies a year.) Mr. Trejo has gone from addict and convict to Hollyweird tough guy.
He makes one scary vampire and I'll never forget his knife-filled vest in Desperado.

Should we dismiss Kim Jong Il as we did Hitler?
Have you noticed how Kim is called a goofy looking little madman? He may very well be just that. But we tried to laugh Hitler off the world stage throughout the 1930's while that goofy looking little madman was preparing to kill millions.
So, is Kim a looney film buff with unlimited power or is he a calculating totalitarian who takes that whole total thingee very seriously? The following story makes me wonder.
From BijouCafe.com comes the disturbing tale of Dictator Kim's foray into the monster movie genre.
Pulgasari (View Cover)
Starring Chamg Sun Hwi, Jong Guk & Satsisu Kembachiro. Directed by Shin Sang-ok & Chong Gon Jo.
The great appeal of many cult flix lies in the life stories not of the onscreen characters , per se, but the folks behind the scenes who were guiding them...
PULGASARI (1985) is just such a flick. The story line, production and characters are as bad as they come , not unlike an Ed Wood effort in its own respective genre in that regard.
So why set PULGASARI apart? The life stories behind the flick are more interesting than what's onscreen, which -- perversely -- makes subsequent viewings of PULGASARI actually much "deeper" with political sub-text (if you're willing to wade beyond the obvious monster vs. society surface; not advised, by the way, in most giant monster flix).
The twisted, sinister tale of PULGASARI's origins begin with the kidnapping of South Korean director Shin Sang-ok by North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il (left). According to Mr. Shin, he was gassed, bagged and delivered into North Korea one night, only to find himself at the personal behest of his 'host' Kim Jong, a self-admitted movie fanatic with one of the world's largest private flix collections. In fact, his Daddy let a younger Kim Jong Il actually write the film production primer that all North Korean flixmakers must 'adhere' to... or else. In North Korea, you see, all film production is state funded so therefore state controlled; flixmakers are routinely paid 'unexpected' visits by government goon squads checking up on them and the content.
Turns out that the now middle-aged dictator not only grooves on kaiju flix, but now wanted to make one that was equal parts GORGO and MAJIN himself. Jong's vision: a towering, iron-eatin' behemoth intent on overthrowing the capitalist exploiters who've been subduing the beloved home land. Despite his intent only to return to South Korea, Shin was now under 'contract' on terms he literally could not refuse: make PULGASARI or die trying, 'comrade' (and you thought Hollywood contracts were Machiavellian!)
The production process went on for years. Kenpachiro Satsuma -- the famed actor who has played Godzilla for many years now (though not the original actor) -- was brought in to play Pulgasari. Obviously, Kim Jong knew his kaiju. Alas, while the effects are occasionally good, most of the time they are distinctly on par and sometimes sub. This has as much to do with the mish mash of production as any intent or lack thereof on Shin's part.
For you see, Shin was actually plotting (along with his wife who had also been kidnapped) to defect to America and soon the grateful couple did so. But though infuriated at the loss, the North Korean dictator decided the show must go on (kind of like his discredited state philosophy), rest/west of the world be damned. So he appointed a new stooge director named Chong Gon Jo to complete his epic.
That 'rest/west be damned' bit sounds eerily familiar as of late coming out of North Korea, eh? But what else do you expect from a post-Stalinist monster save hard love and fast rockets? That's the weirdest irony of all about this giant monster who devours iron and then every bit of metal before it: hidden in the subtext is a clear perversion and rejection of the peasants (I think that was supposed to be "by the peasants". - F.G.) of not only capitalism but also later the liberating communist monster Pulgasari itself.
Wow, no wonder Mr. Shin was ready to risk life and limb to escape...

You think you know what the Spanish Civil War was all about, but you don't know.
The New Spanish Martyrs
By Robert Royal
Most Americans who have even heard of the Spanish Civil War have been led to believe that it was a conflict between democratic, freedom-loving Republicans on the one hand, and Fascists led by General Francisco Franco on the other. Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls and George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia portray the war in that light, though both have the decency to admit that widespread murder of Catholics took place.
Thousands of idealists from other nations volunteered to fight on the side of the Republicans in "International Brigades." Franco’s forces were characterized as reactionary and authoritarian Catholics. But at the time, no western nation supported the Republicans, precisely because of their anti-religious atrocities. Only the Soviet Union, then closely allied with the Spanish Republicans, and Mexico, itself perpetrating atrocities against its own church at the time, backed Republican Spain.
The other countries of the world were right. In Spain, one of Europe’s most staunchly Catholic countries, large numbers of Catholics were butchered during the 1936-1939 Civil War solely for being Catholic. Unlike the martyrdoms in most parts of the world, whole sectors of the religious community were liquidated. At least 6,832 priests and religious were martyred, including 13 bishops. In the 20th century, probably no country witnessed so much bloodshed among its clergy.
The male religious martyred included 259 Claretians, 226 Franciscans, 204 Piarists, 176 Brothers of Mary, 165 Christian Brothers, 155 Augustinians, 132 Dominicans, and 114 Jesuits. The toll among the female orders was lower, but still shocking when we recall that these women could have had virtually nothing to do with the political struggle: 30 Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, 26 Carmelites of Charity, 26 Adoratrices, and 20 Capuchins, along with many others.
But perhaps the greatest fury fell upon diocesan clergy, though it varied a great deal from one place to another. Pamplona, a Nationalist and pro-Catholic stronghold, had no diocesan casualties. Barbastro in Aragon saw 123 of its 140 priests lost to Republican anarchists who were violently anti-clerical. Elsewhere, too, the pattern reflected the fortunes of war. Seville was captured early by the Nationalists and therefore lost only 4 priests. But the other large cities that remained in Republican hands for the duration of the civil war had far higher casualty figures: Barcelona, 279; Valencia, 327; Madrid-Alcalá, 1,118. In percentage terms, these represented 22, 27, and 30 percent of the diocesan clergy in the respective cities.
Remarkably, most of the murders were carried out in only the first six months of the civil war. Probably half of all clergy were, within a week of the uprising, protected in areas controlled by the Nationalists. Without the Nationalists, the slaughter could have been much greater. As it was, about a quarter of the male clergy in Republican-controlled areas disappeared. Almost none of them gave up the faith when they were threatened with death.
The threats took bizarre forms: besides the usual mayhem, in several instances priests were killed and had their ears cut off and passed around as trophies — as if they had been bulls killed in a bullfight. Their witness indicates that the claims that the Spanish Church was corrupt and deserved harsh treatment were false. In fact, it seems, they were quite sincere and heroic.
Nor were lay people spared. One of the most impartial analysts of the civil was has described their plight as follows: "an incalculable number of lay persons were killed because of their religious associations, either as well-known church-goers, members of fraternal and charitable religious organizations, or as the fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends of clerics. Some were killed because they professed their faith by wearing some outward symbol of belief, perhaps a religious medal or scapular. Some were killed for acts of charity, for granting refuge to clerics attempting to escape the fury. It is impossible to determine the number of these lay persons who were slain for their faith. . . .Nor was the anticlericalism limited to killing. Thousands of churches were burned, religious objects were profaned, nuns’ tombs were opened and the petrified mummies displayed to ridicule, and religious ceremonies were burlesqued. Indeed, practically any imaginable anticlerical act was not only possible but likely."
Of the 20th century martyrs beatified by Pope John Paul II, it is no surprise then that the great majority resulted from the civil war in Spain. In 1996, before the wave of beatifications and canonizations associated with the Jubilee year began, of the 266 he beatified, 218 were Spaniards.
Whatever might be said about the complex politics on either side in the Spanish Civil War — and in fairness it ought to be mentioned that Franco and the Nationalists were certainly not Fascists nor the Republicans simply Communists — it is a simple fact that this massive slaughter of Catholics within supposedly civilized Europe has never received the attention it deserves. Many peoples have been the object of murderous hatred in the 20th century. We should not forget that Catholics in Spain figure prominently among them.

Ken Lay's Last Evasion
To Some, (There's the dodge, kiddies. - F.G.) CEO Is Cheating Them One More Time
By Henry Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, July 6, 2006; Page C01
Ah, Kenneth Lay of Enron: America hardly knew you before your trial, but learned after your big-hammer jury conviction that you had left countless suckers broke, employees cheated and stockholders betrayed.
There were also the electricity customers swindled, along the lines of Mr. and Mrs. Front Porch USA, who wanted to leave a night light on without sending Enron their whole Social Security checks for the privilege.
Many people had looked forward to knowing more about Ken Lay, especially how he liked prison.
But now that he's died of a heart attack in the luxury of his Colorado getaway while awaiting sentencing for his crimes, none of his victims will be able to contemplate that he's locked away in a place that makes the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel look like Hawaii; that he might be spending long nights locked in a cell with a panting tattooed monster named Sumo, a man of strange and constant demands; and long days in the prison laundry or jute mill or license plate factory, gibbering with anguish as fire-eyed psychopaths stare at him for unblinking hours while they sharpen spoons into jailhouse stilettos.
He will not be ground into gray jailhouse paste by listening to the eardrum-scarring symphony of 131-decibel despair that is the Muzak of penitentiaries, by gagging on the dead prison air, by choking on the deader food, by watching the blue sky taunt him with freedom over the exercise yard, and by feeling his nervous system rent by the cruel grenades of memories -- explosions of nostalgia for the days when he knew he'd be swanning forever through the comfy laps and cool lawns of luxury and infinite possibility. Sweet Gulfstreams through sweet skies, the pools, the jewels, the Maybach limousines, a life in which he didn't just pimp his ride, he pimped the entire world as he knew it.
Actually, some folks who got the news, the particularly enlightened and civilized ones, are glad they won't have to know that Kenneth Lay is going through these agonies. They may even reflect that if they'd known him personally, they would have known a wonderful father, husband and friend. Isn't that what people always say about people like Ken Lay? And shouldn't people always try to think the best of everyone?
Yes, they should, but so many people may well have responded to the news of Lay's untimely death by feeling cheated, by saying that death wasn't good enough for him, by sensing a frustrated craving for revenge burning in their backbrains like a fire in a tire dump.
Is it possible that a micron below the surface of our liberal and enlightened beliefs lurks savagery? Was the French Enlightenment wrong about our essential goodness, and were the medieval churchmen right about our innate depravity?
We should consider these things in days to come, so that Ken Lay may not have died in vain.
Meanwhile, for those who are baffled by the strange and vicious outrage that greeted news of Lay's passing, at least among some people, there is a story, an old story, a very old joke in fact, that seeks to explain it.
It gets told with many variations, of which the following is one:
Three anthropologists are taken captive by a cruel and remote tribe.
Their chief comes to their hut and informs the anthropologists that they have a choice: death or chi-chi.
The first anthropologist says: "Chi-chi, of course."
There ensues three days of screams, moans, pleadings, whimpers, then silence.
The chief comes to the hut to speak with the second anthropologist. He picks chi-chi, too.
Three more days of shrieks and begging.
The chief comes to the third anthropologist.
"Which do you choose, death or chi-chi?"
"I've heard too much," says the anthropologist. "I'll take death."
"A very wise choice," says the chief, who then adds with a sad smile: "But first, chi-chi."
That's why some of us are disappointed to know of the death of Ken Lay.
Depraved as we may be, what we really hoped was that crimes of his super-size sort might bring him just a little chi-chi.

Pope Benedict XVI tries to convert Spain's pagan socialists.
From the Gulf Times of Doha, Qatar:
Benedict XVI stresses family values at start of Spain visit
VALENCIA, Spain: Pope Benedict XVI launched a message in favour of the traditional family yesterday at the start of his two-day visit to an increasingly secular Spain, where the government has angered the Vatican by legalising gay marriage.
The family founded on the union between man and woman was an “irreplaceable” institution, the Pontiff said on arrival in the eastern city of Valencia.
Speaking to tens of thousands of ecstatic believers in front of a basilica later on, he said concord and fidelity between parents helped to foster pastoral vocations within families.
Later in the afternoon, Benedict held meetings with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
The Pope came to Valencia to close the fifth Catholic World Meeting of Families.
Today, the Pope will celebrate a mass which is expected to draw more than 1 million people.
Valencia was decorated in yellow-and-white drapes and flowers, the Vatican colours, which alternated with black ribbons paying tribute to the 42 victims of Spain’s worst underground train accident on Monday.
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world had come to see the 79-year-old Pontiff on his third trip abroad since his election in April 2005.
Benedict previously made papal visits to his native Germany and to Poland.
Believers lined the streets cheering, chanting, waving flags and balloons and tossing confetti on the Popemobile as the Pope smiled and waved back at them.
After welcome ceremonies at the airport, Benedict visited the Jesus underground station.
He prayed for the victims of Monday’s accident, laying a wreath at the station’s entrance in the presence of fire-fighters who participated in the rescue effort.
The Pope’s visit came under criticism from leftist and ecology groups accusing Valencia’s conservative city authorities of wasting public money on promoting one religion in a secular state.
The city has not disclosed the budget of the Pope’s visit, but the Socialist opposition estimated it at more than 30 million euros ($36 million).

yippee...Italy won in a draw...
For the non-Italian-enabled among you, let me summarize the World Cup final:
The game ended in a 1 - 1 draw after 120 minutes of play. According to the latest in FIFA rules innovations, a chicken was then ritually slaughtered at midfield and its entrails were read by a pagan priestess, who declared the Azzurri champions of the world. Fittingly, the only thing people want to talk about is that foo-foo French punk Zidane, his red card, and his ball of gold.

For those of you with an interest in 20th century history, all but one of the martyrs advanced were killed in the Spanish Civil War. If you can't for the life of you imagine which side would slaughter faithful Catholics wholesale, look here.
Martyrs
-- Servants of God Bonaventura García Paredes, Spanish, professed priest of the Order of Friars Preachers (1866-1936), Miguel Léibar Garay, Spanish, professed priest of the Society of Mary (1885-1936), and 40 companions killed in 1936.
-- Servants of God Simón Reynés Solivellas (1901-1936), Spanish, and five companions of the Congregation of Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Mercy, and Prudenza Canyelles i Ginestá, Spanish, laywoman, all killed in 1936.

Heroic virtues
-- Servant of God Marco Morelli, Italian, diocesan priest and founder of the Congregation of Handmaidens of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Agony (1834- 1912).

-- Servant of God Antonio Rosmini, Italian, priest and founder of the Institute of Charity and of the Sisters of Providence (1797-1855). [From EWTN: Perhaps the most interesting case in the last group is that of Father Antonio Rosmini, whose controversial theories prompted the placement of his works on the Index of forbidden books in 1849. In 1887, the Holy Office specifically condemned 40 propositions attributed to the Italian priest. But in June 2001 the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith-- the successor to the Holy Office-- wrote that the works of Father Rosmini should be recognized as "idealistic and not ontological," and when his writings are seen in that perspective he was faithful to the teachings of the Church.]

Fyodor loves the Philadelphia Eagles!
And ESPN too, I guess...
The News Journal: Reid, Eagles help make boy's wish come true
For one day, Charlie Pena coached the Philadelphia Eagles.
He dissected the playbook with coach Andy Reid. He threw warmup passes with Donovan McNabb. He led the team's postpractice huddle. Pena even met with the media.
It was a dream come true for the 12-year-old Manhattan boy stricken with sickle cell anemia and made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America and ESPN.
The charity organization and sports network teamed to grant 10 children across the country with life-threatening medical issues their sports-related wishes to comprise a series, "My Wish," hosted by Chris Connelly. It will air on "SportsCenter" beginning today and run until July 23. The first segment, centered on Pena and his visit to Eagles minicamp last month, airs at 10:30 a.m. today. The rest air at 6 p.m.
Among the star athletes and professional teams that appear in the series are Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Roger Clemens, Tracy McGrady, Jeff Gordon, Tedy Bruschi, Todd Helton and the Seattle Mariners.
"We used our connections and Make-A-Wish's connections to go to the athletes and get them involved," ESPN senior coordinating producer Stephanie Druley said. "The result was some amazing stories of families and the experiences they had on that day."
Looking for a special summer presentation, ESPN approached the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants about 12,500 wishes yearly, 60 percent of which are celebrity-related, according to president and chief executive officer Dave Williams.
Using a narrowing process that included sport and geographic diversity and the willingness of the afflicted child's family to appear on camera, the organizations found 10 children to spotlight.
Many of the athletes involved, Druley said, had previously worked with the foundation and went to extremes to accommodate the sick children for the segment.
Clemens brought 15-year-old Matthew Vosjpka, of Lonsdale, Minn., to the Astros facilities the day before he made his season debut. McGrady took it upon himself to plan an entire day of events for 10-year-old Daemon Hanna, of Madison, Wis.
"I certainly think you get reacquainted with the power these athletes have in the lives of young people," Connelly said. "On the other side, you see ... how these athletes respond to these kids ... just glowing in the presence of these kids and really responding to them as individuals and taking an interest in them and understanding the role they play. The mutual admiration you see at the end of these pieces is pretty special."
Druley said ESPN picked Pena's story to kick off its series because it best illustrates the joy a child and family feel from having a dream fulfilled.
The moving piece details Pena's painful battle with sickle cell anemia, a debilitating disease that affects millions of people, and chronicles Pena's day with the Eagles.
His wish, however, came with an unusual request.
"He didn't want to just meet a player or shake someone's hand," Connelly said. "He wanted to be a coach."
Added Druley: "When he's on the field with Andy Reid, they are both all business."

You know The Church is in trouble when...
...the Hee Haw Mass (guitar and fiddle) can seamlessly transition to a gypsy/voodoo Mass (tambourines and conga drums) and nobody (apparently) cares...
...and what is laughingly referred to as "the closing song" sounds suspiciously like "The Gambler" .

Just in case you are wondering what exactly Catholics believe, here is
The Apostles Creed
Amen.

About Me
- Fyodor Garibaldi
- First of all, the word is SEX, not GENDER. If you are ever tempted to use the word GENDER, don't. The word is SEX! SEX! SEX! SEX! For example: "My sex is male." is correct. "My gender is male." means nothing. Look it up. What kind of sick neo-Puritan nonsense is this? Idiot left-fascists, get your blood-soaked paws off the English language. Hence I am choosing "male" under protest.
