It is time to kill, cook, and eat some baby cows, kiddies. From Mario Batali and FoodNetwork, here's
Veal with Marinated Mushrooms (Scaloppine Beneventana)
1 pound veal hip or top round, cut into 8 pieces, pounded to 1/8-inch thickness
Salt and pepper
1/4 cup flour, for dredging
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup Basic Tomato Sauce, recipe follows
1/2 cup white wine
1 cup marinated mushrooms, recipe follows, drained
1 large lemon, zested and juiced
2 tablespoons capers, rinsed
8 slices prosciutto, roughly the same diameter as scaloppine
1 bunch Italian parsley, finely chopped to yield 1/4 cup
Season each piece of veal with salt and pepper and dredge in flour.
In a 12 to 14-inch saute pan, heat the oil until smoking. Add 4 pieces dredged veal and cook until light golden brown on each side, about 2 minutes. Remove to a plate and continue with the remaining pieces. When second batch is browned, add the first batch back to the pan and add the tomato sauce, wine, mushrooms, lemon juice and capers and cook 2 to 3 minutes, until the sauce is quite tight.
Place a slice of prosciutto on top of each piece of veal. Remove the veal to a platter, add the parsley and pour the sauce over meat.
Sprinkle with lemon zest and serve.

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 Spanish onion, chopped in 1/4 inch dice
4 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced
3 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves, or 1 tablespoon dried
1/2 medium carrot, finely shredded
2 (28-ounce) cans peeled whole tomatoes, crushed by hand and juices reserved
Salt, to taste
In a 3 quart saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until soft and light golden brown, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add the thyme and carrot and cook 5 minutes more, until the carrot is quite soft. Add the tomatoes and juice and bring to a boil, stirring often. Lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes until as thick as hot cereal. Season with salt and serve. This sauce holds one week in the refrigerator or up to six months in the freezer. Yield: 4 cups
Marinated Mushrooms in a Bath (Funghi al Bagno)
3 to 4 pounds wild mushrooms, such as porcini, chanterelles and hen of the woods (you may substitute 1 1/2 pounds portobellos, 2 pounds shiitake and 1 pound crimini)
3 cups good white wine vinegar
1 bottle good dry white wine
4 fresh bay leaves
1 stem rosemary
1 tablespoon hot chili flakes
10 black peppercorns
1/4 cup kosher salt
2 liters extra-virgin olive oil
Equipment: 3 quart jars with lids, cleaned and sterilized
Clean the mushrooms of any dirt with a soft brush or a cloth, but do not wash with water. Cut the portobello caps into quarters and cut the stems into 1/2-inch thick rectangles, and set aside.
Remove the stems from the shiitake, leave the caps whole and set aside. Halve the crimini and set aside.
Pour the vinegar and the wine into a stainless steel, 8 quart saucepan and add the bay leaves, rosemary, chili flakes, peppercorns and salt and bring to a boil.
Add all of the mushrooms and, once the solution has returned to a boil, cook for 20 minutes. Drain the mushrooms in a colander, discarding the aromatics, and pour them out onto a stack of kitchen towels to drain and dry well, about 30 minutes.
Divide the mushrooms among the 3 jars, placing 3 or 4 peppercorns and a pinch of chili flakes in each jar. Fill each of the jars with oil to the very top and refrigerate overnight.
The mushrooms will absorb oil the first couple of nights, so it will be necessary to "top up" the oil after 3 or 4 days. Seal the jars with the caps and allow the mushrooms to marinate a week before serving.
In Italy, these mushrooms could easily rest 6 weeks before they're served. They are, however, ready after 4 days, and could be consumed as early as the first day following their marinating.
To serve, bring a jar to room temperature and place some of the mushrooms into a bowl with a little of the oil and a plate of grilled bread rubbed with garlic on the side.

KGTV: Police: Grandma Shot With Taser Gun For Interfering With Spanking
A man was ordered to stay away from his wife's grandmother, after he shot her with a Taser gun during an argument, according to authorities. It happened in Aaron and Caroline Debruin's home, in Washington.
The Debruins were spanking their child, when Caroline's grandmother, Rosemary Garlock, stepped in and asked the parents to stop, according to police.
Garlock was asked to leave, and when she didn't Aaron Debruin shocked her using a taser gun, police said. Garlock called police and Debruin was arrested, according to authorities.

Washington's other newspaper: Troops Authorized to Kill Iranian Operatives in Iraq
The Bush administration has authorized the U.S. military to kill or capture Iranian operatives inside Iraq as part of an aggressive new strategy to weaken Tehran's influence across the Middle East and compel it to give up its nuclear program, according to government and counterterrorism officials with direct knowledge of the effort.
For more than a year, U.S. forces in Iraq have secretly detained dozens of suspected Iranian agents, holding them for three to four days at a time. The "catch and release" policy was designed to avoid escalating tensions with Iran and yet intimidate its emissaries. U.S. forces collected DNA samples from some of the Iranians without their knowledge, subjected others to retina scans, and fingerprinted and photographed all of them before letting them go.
Last summer, however, senior administration officials decided that a more confrontational approach was necessary, as Iran's regional influence grew and U.S. efforts to isolate Tehran appeared to be failing. The country's nuclear work was advancing, U.S. allies were resisting robust sanctions against the Tehran government, and Iran was aggravating sectarian violence in Iraq.
"There were no costs for the Iranians," said one senior administration official. "They are hurting our mission in Iraq, and we were bending over backwards not to fight back."
Three officials said that about 150 Iranian intelligence officers, plus members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Command, are believed to be active inside Iraq at any given time. There is no evidence the Iranians have directly attacked U.S. troops in Iraq, intelligence officials said.
But, for three years, the Iranians have operated an embedding program there, offering operational training, intelligence and weaponry to several Shiite militias connected to the Iraqi government, to the insurgency and to the violence against Sunni factions. Gen. Michael V. Hayden, the director of the CIA, told the Senate recently that the amount of Iranian-supplied materiel used against U.S. troops in Iraq "has been quite striking."
"Iran seems to be conducting a foreign policy with a sense of dangerous triumphalism," Hayden said.
The new "kill or capture" program was authorized by President Bush in a meeting of his most senior advisers last fall, along with other measures meant to curtail Iranian influence from Kabul to Beirut and, ultimately, to shake Iran's commitment to its nuclear efforts. Tehran insists that its nuclear program is peaceful, but the United States and other nations say it is aimed at developing weapons.
The administration's plans contain five "theaters of interest," as one senior official put it, with military, intelligence, political and diplomatic strategies designed to target Iranian interests across the Middle East.
The White House has authorized a widening of what is known inside the intelligence community as the "Blue Game Matrix" -- a list of approved operations that can be carried out against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon. And U.S. officials are preparing international sanctions against Tehran for holding several dozen al-Qaeda fighters who fled across the Afghan border in late 2001. They plan more aggressive moves to disrupt Tehran's funding of the radical Palestinian group Hamas and to undermine Iranian interests among Shiites in western Afghanistan.
In Iraq, U.S. troops now have the authority to target any member of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, as well as officers of its intelligence services believed to be working with Iraqi militias.
The policy does not extend to Iranian civilians or diplomats.
Though U.S. forces are not known to have used lethal force against any Iranian to date, Bush administration officials have been urging top military commanders to exercise the authority.
Why, you ask?

AP: Fed panel nixes new birth control pill rules
Washington - The government shouldn't set failure limits on birth control pills because that could put less-effective but still beneficial contraceptives off limits to women, federal health advisers recommended Wednesday.
"Beneficial".
Newer, lower-dose birth control pills are less effective at preventing pregnancy than the first oral contraceptives approved beginning in 1960. Yet the newer drugs offer other health benefits or cause fewer side effects. That has split federal health officials on the need to define a pregnancy or failure rate that would be unacceptably high for next-generation pills.
Throughout the 1960s, the earliest birth control pills to win
Food and Drug Administration approval failed just once per 100 woman-years of use. That is, for every 100 women taking the pills for a year, there was fewer than one pregnancy on average among them.
Today, newer pills contain less estrogen and progestin. Those pills can reduce the risk of blood clots, stroke and other sometimes deadly side effects. But as the hormone content of the pills has dipped, failure rates have climbed.
"Sometimes deadly side effects".
Over the last decade, the FDA has approved some pills with failure rates that exceed two pregnancies per 100 woman-years of use, according to agency documents. That is twice the rate considered acceptable in the 1960s.
"Failure".
But allowing the less effective pills on the market can increase the options for women and their doctors, said Dr. Charles Lockwood of Yale University, acting chairman of FDA's reproductive health drugs advisory committee.
"Options".
"We don't want an arbitrary number to be ascribed," Lockwood said after the panel declined to define a pregnancy rate that would be considered unacceptable.
"Arbitrary".
While most women take the pill to prevent pregnancy, others rely on hormonal contraceptives to regulate their monthly periods or curb acne.
"Acne".
The FDA scheduled meetings both Tuesday and Wednesday with its outside experts to gather advice on future guidelines that drug makers could follow in seeking approval for new hormonal contraceptives.
The FDA is looking at how well studies done prior to approval of new birth control pills reflected their "real-world" use. Typically, that use is less consistent and reliable than it is in clinical studies.
"'Real-world'".
Also, newer versions of the pill aren't being tested on women who reflect the broader population. The women in clinical trials are younger, skinnier and healthier than are U.S. women on average, panelists and other experts said.
"Broader population".
The more clinical trials can mimic real-world use, the more confident women will be that the pills both work and are safe, Kirsten Moore, president of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project, a nonprofit advocacy group, told panelists.
"Work". "Safe".
"When expectations don't match up to reality, women are more likely to discontinue their contraceptive use and possibly expose themselves to unwanted pregnancies," Moore said.
"Reality"!
The exclusion of smokers, obese and older women from clinical trials also underscores the need for large follow-up studies that assess the real-world safety and effectiveness of the oral contraceptives, advisers said. Who would fund those studies remains unclear.
"Unclear".
For instance, the risk of pregnancy and blood clots both can rise in obese women who take the pill, Amy Allina, program and policy director with advocacy group National Women's Health Network, told the panel. The pills also appear not to work as well in overweight women, according to the FDA.
"Risk".
The FDA acknowledged its own staff is split over whether to establish an acceptable failure rate for pills and, if so, what that rate should be. The FDA isn't required to follow the advice of its advisory committees, but usually does.
"Acceptable failure".
Several panelists suggested that any birth-control pill that isn't highly effective or offers some other benefit simply wouldn't sell, making the issue moot.
"Moot".
"If a new product isn't as good as what's out there, clinicians aren't going to prescribe it — unless there's something there," said Lorraine Tulman, of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing and the panel's consumer representative.
"Product".
Nearly 12 million U.S. women were on the pill as of 2002, making it the nation's leading method of contraception, according to a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.
"12 million".

Borneo Bulletin: I didn't go to radical madrassah: Obama
US presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama fought back against an allegation that he was educated at a radical Islamic school as a child in Indonesia, determined to avoid being tripped up by unsubstantiated charges like those that undermined Sen. John Kerry in 2004.
Ha!
Interviews by The Associated Press at the elementary school in Jakarta found that it is a public and secular institution that has been open to students of all faiths since before the White House contender attended in the late 1960s.
Obama, who was born in Hawaii, moved to Indonesia at age 6 to live with his mother and stepfather, attending schools in the country until age 10, when he returned to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents. "The allegations are completely baseless," said Akmad Solichin, the vice principal at SDN Menteng 1, who added, "Yes, most of our students are Muslim, but there are Christians as well. Everyone's welcome here ... it's a public school."
A spokesman for Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs said Wednesday claims that Obama studied at an Islamic school are groundless. "SDN Menteng 1 is a public primary school that is open to people of all faiths," said the spokesman. "Moreover, he studied earlier at Fransiskus Assisi, which is clearly a Catholic school."
Where he was registered as a mohammedan.
The problem is not with Obama, it is with the goat rapists. If he was reared as a mohammedan and converted, he would be a very high profile target for someone interested in making him pay for his "apostasy".
The contention that Obama was educated at a radical Muslim madrassah surfaced on the Web site of the conservative Insight magazine the day after Obama declared his candidacy for the 2008 White House race by forming a presidential exploratory committee. Conservative Internet blogs and the Fox News Channel picked up the story and spread the charges just as his candidacy was getting off the ground. Obama on Wednesday called the reports "scurrilous," and his communications director e-mailed reporters a lengthy memo attempting to set the record straight. "I think they recognise that the notion that me going to school in Indonesia for two years at a public school there at the age of 7 and 8 is probably not going to be endangering in some way the people of America," Obama said.

Did you see that poll about Iraq suggesting that…
What's that? Barack Obama? Oh, sorry. According to the new rules from the American Media Practitioners Association, we’re obliged to make at least one flattering reference to Barack Obama per column, preferably accompanied by that picture USA Today used with his head framed by a kind of luminous halo thing. So okay, all together now:
Barack Obama!
What a wonderful phrase!
Barack Obama!
Ain’t no passin’ craze!
It means no worries
For the rest of your days!
Barack Obama announced last week that he was forming an exploratory committee to explore whether he can really be as fabulous as the media say he is. And happily the answer is: yes! He’s young, gifted and black, and white, and Hawaiian, and Kansan, and charismatic, and Congregationalist, and Muslim. He rejects the way “politics has become so bitter and partisan,” he represents “a different kind of politics.” He smokes, which is different. He was raised in an Indonesian madrassah by radical imams, which is more than John Edwards can say. And he looks totally cool when he smokes! I haven’t smoked since I was fourteen but I’m thinking of taking it up again just because the sophisticated refreshing nicotine taste helps take the partisan bitterness out of the atmosphere. Barack Obama is Lauren Bacall to America’s Humphrey Bogart. Lauren Barack coolly blows smoke, leans against the wall and purrs:
“You don’t have to say anything and you don’t have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.”
Some commentators say he’s a blank slate. And how long is it since we’ve seen one of those? They used to have ‘em in the schoolhouses back when the kids still learnt stuff instead of just discussing their sexuality with the guidance counselor all week long. I’ll bet in those radical madrassahs they’re still using blank slates.
The madrassah stuff was supposedly leaked to Insight Magazine by some oppo-research heavies on Hillary Rodham Clinton’s team. Which if true suggests that Hillary’s losing her touch. It’s certainly the case that a foreign education doesn’t always assist in electoral politics: John Kerry didn’t play up the Swiss finishing school angle. But look at it from a Democratic primary voter’s point of view, the kind who drive around with those “CO-EXIST” bumper stickers made up of the cross and the Star of David and the Islamic crescent and the peace sign. Your whole worldview is based on the belief that deep down we’d all rub along just fine and this neocon fever about Islam is just a lot of banana oil to keep the American people in a state of fear and paranoia. What would more resoundingly confirm that view than if the nicest, most non-bitter, non-partisan guy in politics turns out to have graduated from the Sword of the Infidel Slayer grade school in Jakarta?
To be sure, the imams always knew young Barack was not your typical novitiate. No doubt when he was late for Friday prayers they stood around singing “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Obama?” How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand? Who knows? But, if your entire campaign is based on the fact that your slender resume represents national reconciliation, why be so modest? Why not upgrade it to represent full-blown global reconciliation?
That poll about Iraq I mentioned right at the beginning was very interesting. It came out last week and it posed various questions about whether folks thought the “surge” was a good idea or not. Including the following:
“Do you personally want the Iraq plan President Bush announced last week to succeed?”
And here’s how the American people answered: 63 percent said yes, 22 percent said no, 15 percent said they didn’t know.
Let me see if I understand that. For four years, regardless of this or that position on the merits of the war, almost everybody has claimed to “support our troops.” Some of us have always thought that “supporting the troops” while not supporting them in their mission is not entirely credible. But here we have 37 percent of the American people actually urging defeat on them. They “support our troops” by wanting them to lose. This isn’t a question about whether you think the plan will work, but whether you want it to work. And nearly 40 percent of respondents either don’t know or are actively rooting for failure. Which is to say: more dead American troops and more dead Iraqi civilians. Asked whether they want the surge to succeed, 34 percent of Democrats answered “No,” and so did 19 percent of independents and 11 percent of Republicans. What were the numbers like for D-Day?
The problem isn’t that our politics is “bitter” and “partisan,” so much as that it’s post-modern. In Congress, Democrats have decided to chip away at the war with various symbolic postures but not to oppose it outright: that way, if things go well, they can muscle in on the credit, but, if things go badly, they’ll be able to say they told you so without getting stuck with the blame. Over on the other side, the usual Republican squishes (Olympia Snowe et al) have decided that “the facts on the ground” have mysteriously changed and their position on the war is now “evolving.” By “the facts on the ground,” they mean the ground around the polling booths back home rather than any ground in Baghdad or the Sunni Triangle. Somewhere far away there is a real country called Iraq where real people live and die. But Iraq in domestic terms is now mostly a political calculation and, when it comes to calibrating the precise degree of Defeat Lite that works best for one, most Democrats and more and more Republicans are pushing the rest of the planet to the farthest fringes of the map.
Whether the rest of the planet will be content with a non-speaking part remains to be seen. But increasing numbers of the American people reject the post-9/11 paradigm, and there will be a lot of votes for the quiet-life option in 2008. A doctrinaire liberal disciplined enough to pass himself off as a blank slate with sappy soft-focus multiculti bonafides would seem to offer the most symbolically appealing repudiation of the war years. And all we have to do is whistle: we don’t have to say anything and we don’t have to do anything, which suits us just fine.
And, if Hillary thinks everyone’s going to pursue stories about some long-ago madrassah, she has a sweetly touching faith in the American media.

Believe it or not, kiddies, it is time once again for savants, shamans, and assorted snake oil salesmen to rip the entrails out of a chicken or two and predict the future. (Past results do not predict future performance. Or necessarily get you within the margin of error.)
Time magazine (Yeah, I know. But they are still around.) sacrifices a fine feathered friend in the name of what they call democracy...
Hillary Clinton is the clear front-runner to win the Democratic party's nomination for President in 2008, but the Republican race will be a close contest between Senator John McCain and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani — with McCain edging Giuliani by a three- to four-point margin. And a presidential face-off between Clinton and McCain, right now, would be close to a dead heat. Those are some of the key findings of a new TIME poll earlier this week that canvassed a random sample of 1,064 registered voters by phone.
Despite the buzz generated by Senator Barack Obama entering the race, the survey found that Senator Clinton would beat him for the Democratic nomination by a margin of 40% to 21%. Senator John Edwards is a distant third with 11%. Obama clearly suffers a disadvantage in profile among likely voters, with only 51% indicating that they knew enough about him to form an opinion, compared with 94% saying the same of Hillary Clinton. In Obama's favor, however, is his far lower negative ratings. While 58% of voters familiar with Hillary Clinton have a positive view of her, 41% give her negative marks, for a net favorability score of +17. By contrast, Obama's net favorability score is +47. On the Republican side, Giuliani has a net favorability rating of +68, with only 14% having a negative view of him. McCain's net favorability score is +45.
McCain, however, holds a narrow lead of 30% to 26% over Giuliani for the GOP nomination. A race between McCain and Clinton would be a virtual tie (47%-47%), according to the poll, while McCain would beat either Obama or Senator John Edwards by a 7-point margin.

San Jose Mercury News: Will Obama's message excite black voters?
Chicago - Looking around at the overwhelmingly white audience enthusiastically applauding Sen. Barack Obama's recent luncheon speech on Iraq at a downtown hotel, the Rev. Herbert Martin expressed both satisfaction and concern.
Martin, who said he was the only black person in the crowd, was thrilled that Obama, the only African-American in the Senate, could engender such enthusiasm from a white audience because it offered further proof that the Illinois Democrat would be a formidable presidential candidate. But Martin also worried that in order to run successfully, Obama would have to become a different kind of politician than the one who earned the trust of voters on Chicago's mostly black South Side as a state legislator before he was elected to the Senate in 2004.
Be careful, Senator. After all, Clarence Thomas is darker than thou.
"How does he identify himself?'' asked Martin, who was pastor to the late Harold Washington, Chicago's first black mayor. "Will he continue to be an African-American or will he become some kind of new creation?''
Eek! Clones!
The question of how Obama chooses to define and approach race looms large as he moves closer to formally launching his campaign next month. Although he rides a wave of enthusiasm among Democrats who like his vision of a different kind of politics and see him as an alternative to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, N.Y., it is unclear that his multiracial message can also excite black voters hungry for affirmation of the issues most important to them.
Independent thinker
Now that's funny. Whenever you see that phrase in the AmericaLast media, you can bet your mortgage the person in question has been spewing nothing but socialist mumbo-jumbo (sorry) since puberty.
"You can be elected president as a black person only if you signal at some level that you are independent from black people, which is guaranteed to'' make black people angry, said Melissa Harris-Lacewell, a Princeton University professor who has followed Obama's political ascent. "He is going to have to figure out whether there is a way not to alienate and anger a black base that almost by definition is going to be disappointed.''
Already, that balancing act is causing some strains. Some of Obama's longtime black supporters in Illinois are grumbling about the largely white crowd of advisers who now surround Obama as he gears up his national campaign. "Who does he represent? That is what people are worried about,'' said Lorenzo Martin, publisher of the Chicago Standard newspapers, a chain of black-oriented weeklies in the southern suburbs. "When you look and see who is surrounding him, you are not going to see too many brothers. What you see is the liberal left.''
Wait just a darn minute! Plenty of mob bosses had Jewish gangsters and lawyers around them and that didn't make them less Italian...or less criminal.
Complicating matters is that Obama appears certain to encounter fierce competition for the black vote from the other leading Democratic presidential contenders. Black Democrats prefer Clinton 3 to 1 over Obama, and four out of five of black Democrats view her favorably, much higher than the 54 percent who have a favorable view of Obama, according to combined findings from two Washington Post-ABC polls taken in December and January. Clinton also enjoys close ties to top black elected officials, and her husband, former President Clinton, remains extremely popular among African-Americans.
To be fair, Goober II was all black.
Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., who launched his presidential campaign from the devastation of New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward to highlight his commitment to attacking poverty, is also expected to make a strong appeal to black voters.
Waiting in the wings is another African-American, Al Sharpton, a 2004 candidate who is considering running again.
The Miracle Worker? Please.
As for Sharpton, even leftist blacks don't take him seriously.
Jesse Jackson, whose presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988 created a sensation across black America that swept millions of new voters onto the rolls, said there is no guarantee that Obama could expect the same kind of support. "He faces some real challenges,'' Jackson said. "First, there will be intense competition for black votes. The other reason is that most black people met him two years ago on television from Boston.''
Jackson was referring to the speech at the 2004 Democratic convention that propelled Obama onto the national stage when he was still an Illinois state senator.
In case you have forgotten, kiddies, that was Senator War Criminal's convention.
His heritage
Born to a white mother and a black Kenyan father, reared in Hawaii by his white grandparents and for a few years in Indonesia with his Indonesian stepfather, Obama in many ways embodies the one America he often talks about: He identifies himself as African-American, but his experiences are at once those of African-Americans, whites, Asian-Americans and immigrants.
"I've never had the option of restricting my loyalties on the basis of race, or measuring my worth on the basis of tribe,'' Obama wrote in his latest book, "The Audacity of Hope,'' in which he also observed that he has blood relatives who resemble Margaret Thatcher and others who could pass for Bernie Mac.''
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That's what we need. A pol who can laugh at his high yellow relatives.
Still, Obama chose to build his political career by rooting himself in the black community. In 1983, soon after resigning from a high-powered financial consultant's post in Manhattan, he moved to Chicago as a $10,000-a-year organizer for the Calumet Community Religious Conference.
He left Chicago to attend Harvard Law School, then returned to head a statewide voter-registration effort before joining a small, civil rights law firm. In 1996, he was elected to the Illinois state Senate from a mostly black South Side district.

Barack Obama faces a tough balancing act in his effort to appeal to nation's black voters.
And, finally...Senator Barry Hussein Obama? Oy vey...

The Plameplot Dome scandal grinds toward its farcical conclusion.
AP: Faulty memories abound at CIA leak trial
Washington - The CIA leak trial has so far been memorable for forgetfulness.
One by one, Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's first three witnesses said they discussed with former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby the fact that a prominent Bush administration critic was married to a CIA operative.
And one by one, each witness conceded a memory problem. One could not actually remember the conversation. Another recalled it differently than when he first spoke to investigators. A third said his memory improved as time went on.
The early testimony points up the difficulty prosecutors will have proving their perjury and obstruction case against Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney. In a case that hinges on whether Libby lied to investigators or simply remembered poorly, defense lawyers are eager to show a bad memory is in good company.
Libby is accused of lying to investigators who were trying to figure out who leaked CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity to the journalists. Plame's husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, was a vocal critic of the administration.

It Takes A Village To Staff A Gestapo Unit Update...

The New York Sun: Hillary Sees Bill's Allies Fall Away
One of the biggest advantages Senator Clinton enjoys as she launches her presidential bid is the vast web of politically active Democrats who worked in the federal government under her husband, President Clinton. But not everyone who served during the Clinton years is promoting a reprise.
A handful of top Clinton administration officials and a smattering of lower-ranking ones have taken up with Mrs. Clinton's rivals for the Democratic nomination. Most cite pre-existing personal or professional loyalties. In some instances, however, the Democratic activists seem to have concluded that they will have more of an impact in the leaner ranks of a rival campaign than in the hierarchy of Mrs. Clinton's long-planned bid. And a former White House counsel to Mr. Clinton, Abner Mikva, told The New York Sun he thought the candidate he is backing, Senator Obama, has a better chance of winning than Mrs. Clinton does. The highest-ranking defectors include a political aide who shadowed Mr. Clinton for years and is advising Senator Dodd of Connecticut, Douglas Sosnik; a former secretary of commerce now backing Senator Obama of Illinois, William Daley, and a former chief of staff to Vice President Gore now in the camp of Senator Biden of Delaware, Ronald Klain.
"Most of the people have some sort of pre-existing connection or relationship," a former Clinton White House aide, Christopher Lehane, said. He said he doubted there were hard feelings in those circumstances, though there might be in cases where people had no obvious prior ties to one of Mrs. Clinton's rivals. "There are different gradations to all of this," Mr. Lehane added.

See if you can spot the most interesting line in this story, kiddies.
Honolulu Advertiser: Islanders object to portrayal in MTV's Maui Fever
Ka'anapali, Hawaii — Some Maui residents are objecting to the latest MTV reality show, "Maui Fever," saying its sexual content and all-white cast gives viewers a skewed impression of their island.
The first episode highlights a group of men who target tourists for fast, easy, and noncommittal hookups.
Previews for the eight-episode series — which airs on MTV Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. — hint at cheating, fighting, partying and hooking up. The first episode aired last week.
"I don't want (tourists) to come to Maui and think that people are going to come up to their daughters, so 'I better keep them away,"' Nathan Ugale, 16, who was born and raised in Lahaina told The Maui News. "It's good for TV but not when it's happening in the town that you live in, that you've been a part of your whole life."
Dingdingdingdingdingdingdingding! You're a winner.
If only Fresno got that many tourists...
Abcde Shibao, 16, also of Lahaina, said Maui residents come across as one-dimensional in the program.
Abcde? I can only hope that is a typo. (If it isn't, I should not complain. I have often thought of changing my name to Abacab.)
"I thought it was kind of insulting. ... They just show partying," Abcde Shibao, 16, of Lahaina told the newspaper. "But (young people are) active in school, community and sports. We do other things besides partying."
Other objections stem from how the show fails to represent the ethnic and cultural makeup of Maui.
The show's seven main stars — two women and five men — are all Caucasian.
Are they saying it would be better if non-white guys were screwing the daughters of the tourists? Would that make native Hawaiians look good?
According to the 2000 census, Maui County is 31 percent Asian, 10 percent Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 22 percent mixed race. Caucasians account for 33 percent of the county, which includes the small islands of Lanai and Moloka'i along with Maui.
None of the players was born on Maui, though three graduated from Maui schools.
"Players". How hip of thee.
"(The show) is a really good idea, but these people aren't from here," said Kim Cabanilla, 18, of Lahaina. "The haole thing is not a big deal, but I'd like to see people who are from here." "Haole" is local slang for white.
Again, taking advantage of tourist babes is fine and makes wonderful entertainment as long as our own hometown non-white studs are doing it.
Series creator Morgan J. Freeman told The Honolulu Advertiser that casting was a challenge because of the need to find a group of people who already were friends and who didn't mind getting intimate on television.
"You can only film people who are willing to be filmed, and a lot of the people we wanted (for a more diverse cast) didn't want to be filmed. You can't control that," Freeman said. He added some of the supporting characters are nonwhite.
I know how sick you have to be to do this, but how extra-special sick do you have to be to want to be filmed doing it?
Freeman said Maui was an ideal setting for the show because of its exotic backdrops and spicy mix of tourists and locals.
"There's an allure to the tropics and to Hawaii, and of living on a tropical island and being on permanent vacation," Freeman said.
State Film Commissioner Donne Dawson said her office was unaware of the show's details when producers pitched the idea.
She added that film permits can't be denied based on content, unless a proposed project violates state pornography laws or other state rules.
Brilliant!
Dawson and Benita Brazier, Maui County film commissioner, said her office hasn't heard whether the show would be shooting a second season.

From The Keep It In Your Pants Department (Part One):
FOX 21: Arrests, Sex, and Lies, At Upstate High School
Ware Shoals, SC - Accusations of sex, lies and scandals run rampant at one upstate high school. On Monday, deputies arrested the principal of Ware Shoals High School for allegedly covering up for the school's cheerleading coach. The coach is accused of giving alcohol to her cheerleaders, and a whole lot more.
Last week, Greenwood county deputies arrested Jill Moore, the cheerleading coach at Ware Shoals High School for "moral offenses" involving some of her cheerleaders. On Monday, deputies also arrested Principal Jane Blackwell at the school. She's accused of knowing about the offenses and doing nothing about it.
Remember when women used to know better? Or was I just hallucinating?
After her release from the detention center, Blackwell said, "I would just like to say that these charges are- I have not done anything wrong, and the evidence will prove that."
Greenwood County deputies say Principal Blackwell is lying.
They say she knew what was going on since the incidents began last summer. Sheriff Dan Wideman said, "You see it all over, California, New York, but you don't think Greenwood, and you don't think Ware Shoals. Shocker, without a doubt."
I was probably hallucinating.
FOX Carolina has learned some of the shocking details involving Moore, the cheerleading coach. According to FOX Carolina sources, Moore was dating a National Guard recruiter and was recruiting cheerleaders to party. In at least one incident, a 16-year-old student had sex and drank alcohol with another National Guardsman.
What, do these guys think they work for the UN?
Jessica Applewhite, a tenth grader at Ware Shoals High, said, "The kids are shocked about it. Some were crying today. I was really shocked to hear about it."
FOX Carolina called the National Guard about this story, and they released the following statement:
The South Carolina National Guard is working closely with the Greenwood County Sherriff's Department investigation of matters relating to alleged misconduct of certain Ware Shoals faculty and/or administration, as well as any related misconduct by any National Guard soldier.
The South Carolina National Guard takes our relationship with local communities and schools very seriously. This is because not only are they the communities we serve, they are ultimately the source of our citizen soldiers. Because of this relationship with the schools and the communities and the recurring contact our Recruiting and Retention personnel have with local high schools they receive mandatory training on how to deal with situations such as these and given specific guidelines to follow both as professionals and as soldiers. We do not condone actions such as the ones alleged and we have opened our own military equivalent investigation into the matter in conjunction with the ongoing civil investigation.
The South Carolina National Guardsmen allegedly involved have been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
If the investigation determines that there was wrongdoing on the part of any member or members of the South Carolina National Guard, appropriate action will be taken up to and including court martial and separation from the Guard.

The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.
Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy clemency hear and answer me. Amen.
St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse, pray for us.
Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from Christ's side, wash me; Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O good Jesus, hear me; Within Thy wounds hide me; Suffer me not to be separated from Thee; From the malicious enemy defend me; In the hour of my death call me; And bid me come unto Thee; That I may praise Thee with Thy saints and with Thy angels Forever and ever. Amen.
Prayer to St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire
Dear St. Anthony, you became a Franciscan with the hope of shedding your blood for Christ. In God's plan for you, your thirst for martyrdom was never to be satisfied. St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire, pray that I may become less afraid to stand up and be counted as a follower of the Lord Jesus. Intercede also for my other intentions. (Name them.)
Prayer To Saint Michael The Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the divine power, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God, I thank You today for the gift of my life, and for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part to end abortion. Today I commit myself never to be silent, never to be passive, and never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement, and never stop defending life until all my brothers and sisters are protected and our nation once again becomes a nation with liberty and justice, not just for some, but for all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer For Vocations
Send forth your Spirit, Lord, into the hearts of your faithful people, that we may be conscious of our vocation to holiness and sevice to others. Grant that many of us may dedicate ourselves to You through the priesthood and the religious life.We pray especially for the needs of our own parish and diocese. Grant that we may always have sufficient good and holy priests, and dedicated Sisters to serve our commumities. We pray, too, for religious orders; that generous men may join them to become zealous missionaries in preaching the Gospel in word and action, especially to the poor and abandoned. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
Prayer Before The Crucifix
Behold, O kind and gentle Jesus, I kneel before Thee and pray that Thou would impress upon my heart the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, with true repentance for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment. At the same time, with sorrow I meditate on Thy five precious wounds, having in mind the words which David spoke in prophecy: "They have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones."
Divine Praises
Blessed be God.
Blessed be His Holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.
Blessed be the Name of Jesus.
Blessed be His most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be His most Precious Blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception.
Blessed be her glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.
Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse.
Blessed be God in His angels and in His saints.
May the Heart of Jesus in the most Blessed Sacrament
Be praised, adored and loved
With grateful affection at every moment

- First of all, the word is SEX, not GENDER. If you are ever tempted to use the word GENDER, don't. The word is SEX! SEX! SEX! SEX! For example: "My sex is male." is correct. "My gender is male." means nothing. Look it up. What kind of sick neo-Puritan nonsense is this? Idiot left-fascists, get your blood-soaked paws off the English language.
