Fox News parent 21st Century Fox has paid out $50 million to settle sexual harassment claims made against the network over the past year.

The disclosed amount, revealed Monday in the company’s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, is up from the $45 million that company said in May was incurred over the previous nine months.

The settlements have occurred since Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson’s lawsuit against then-Fox News chief Roger Ailes, charging him with harassment and retaliation, opened a floodgate of claims against the company. Ailes denied the charges but was forced out of the company, which paid a $20-million settlement to Carlson.

Carlson’s suit led to a companywide investigation. Dozens of women came forward to complain about treatment at a company where harassment and inappropriate behavior had been tolerated or ignored. Fox also faces a class-action racial discrimination lawsuit.

The company has acted quickly in recent months to respond to harassment claims. Two on-air hosts — Fox News Channel’s Eric Bolling and Fox Business Network’s Charles Payne — are currently suspended as harassment claims against them are being investigated by law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

The company noted that it faces more litigation and settlement costs related to the matters. But the SEC filing says that is not expected to have an adverse impact on its financial condition.

The figure does not include the contract payouts to employees accused of harassment and forced out of the company. Ailes, who died in May, reportedly received $40 million when he exited Fox last summer. Fox News prime-time star Bill O’Reilly received at least a year’s worth of the salary on his newly signed contract — about $25 million — when he departed in April after revelations that the company had paid off a number of harassment claims going back to 2004. O’Reilly denied the allegations against him.

The company did note that it had restructuring charges of $224 million in the past year “primarily related to costs in connection with management and employee transitions and restructuring” in several of its business units including Fox News Channel. The figure is within the range of restructuring charges made in the previous two fiscal years before the harassment charges hit.

Last year around this time, I was arguing with fellow conservatives about the insanity of finding any common cause with the so-called alt-right.

The issue wasn’t that every avowed nationalist who claimed membership in the alt-right was a Nazi or Klansman. It was that the alt-right was open to Nazis and Klansmen.

Right-wing cynics, hucksters and opportunists deliberately blurred these distinctions in the name of a right-wing popular front. Steve Bannon, now a White House consigliere, is by most accounts not a bigot. But when he ran Breitbart.com, he had no problem making it a “platform” for the alt-right.
Internet entertainer Milo Yiannopoulos was a Breitbart star for his defenses of the alt-right and its supposedly hilarious Holocaust jokes. He was only let go when it was revealed he was equally broad-minded about pedophilia as about Nazism.

In Bannon’s case, and for so many on the Right, the motivation wasn’t racism or anti-Semitism; it was the need to win at all costs.

Win what? Well, that varied. At first it was the war on the “establishment.” Ultimately it was the fight to get Donald Trump the nomination and the presidency.

In case you kids hadn't noticed, Orange Clump is The Establishment.

As the primaries wound down, the imperative for unity intensified. Why look under rocks when you can use them as stepping stones to victory? Besides, Trump was making it as clear as possible that he welcomed support and praise from any quarter.

The Right’s game of footsie with the alt-right ostensibly ended when Trump won. Bannon disavowed them once he made it to the White House. Like France after the liberation, everyone was a member of the resistance, nobody a collaborator. At least, that is, until Saturday, when the president invited speculation that the old popular front is still operational.

Whatever its status at the White House, the alt-right thinks it will replace the traditional Right. It won’t, for the simple reason that the vast, overwhelming majority of conservatives are patriotic and decent, like Americans generally. They want nothing to do with people who would overthrow the Constitution and set up racial Bantustans.

The real threat to traditional conservatism is the mindset that made it possible to form even a theoretical alliance with the alt-right in the first place: the idea that winning and fighting are self-justifying.

Over the last decade, many on the Right convinced themselves the real problem with conservatism is a lack of will. They quote left-wing activist Saul Alinsky and claim that “we” have to be like “them” by doing whatever is necessary to “win.”

During the campaign, when Trump attacked the ethnicity of an American judge or the parents of a fallen Muslim U.S. soldier, the response from his defenders was usually, “At least he fights!”

Fight? The Mess-iahdent is the biggest pansy to be elected president since Woody "No Wood" Wilson. It buys its undies where Marv Albert shops. (See Deadspin's The Comeback Pig: Marv Albert, And How To Survive Any Sex Scandal)

Such amorality was warranted, many explained, because if Clinton had won, America would be “over.” National security official Michael Anton dubbed it a “Flight 93 election,” arguing that conservatives must do anything for victory or accept certain death. In an interview with New York magazine, he went further. “If we must have Caesar,” Anton said, “who do you want him to be? One of theirs? Or one of yours?”

The election is over. Yet that spirit not only endures, it has intensified. Trump’s conservative critics, or “apostates” as Conrad Black calls us, face the same ultimatum. “The choice, for sane conservatives,” Black writes, “is Trump or national disaster.” The upshot is that the test for “sane” conservatives is loyalty to the president, not to any body of ideas/ideals. Even  truth takes a back seat.
I’d point out that such thinking could invite the worst, most opportunistic creatures to infiltrate the movement. Except they already have.

I don't know who the heck Conrad Blackhead is, but he's obviously a cretin. Even Jonah doesn't get it. AmeriKKKa is over. It is time to head into the catacombs to let the fascist right and the fascist left slaughter each other.

In the South during the Jim Crow era, the "one-drop rule," codified into law, asserted that if a person had just one drop of African-American blood, they were considered "black." I wonder what we'd learn if we gave former KKK leader David Duke and the "white nationalists" who caused havoc in Charlottesville last Saturday a DNA test to determine their racial makeup?

Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., a Harvard professor, discovered in "Finding Your Roots," his PBS series on race in America, that there are no purebred humans. Gates himself discovered through a DNA test that he is descended from an Irish immigrant and a slave.

Duke and his neo-Nazi followers are responsible for the deaths of three people and for injuring 19 others as surely as if they had driven that car into the crowd themselves or crashed the Virginia state police helicopter dispatched to control the protestors, which claimed the lives of two officers.

The white supremacists marching in Charlottesville said they want to "take America back." Take it back from whom and for what purpose? The left and the right occasionally convey a similar message. What is it about America that makes some people want to seize it from other people? Among other things, the demonstrators were upset that streets and statues memorializing men who led the South during the Civil War are being removed and replaced by those honoring men and women untainted by the stain of slavery.

The place to make their case is before elected representatives, or peacefully in the public square. They might ask how far those who want to abolish history wish to go. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Are their accomplishments enough to overcome their flawed belief that African-Americans were inherently inferior to whites and, therefore, tailor-made for subjugation? Should the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial be destroyed or renamed? Should the images of Jefferson or Washington be removed from our currency?

Washington, our first president, led the Revolutionary War and is considered the founder of the nation. Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and penned words in the Declaration of Independence that Frederick Douglass in the 19th century and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 20th century would refer to in an effort to hold America to Jefferson's statement that rights come from our Creator, not government.

President Trump said Saturday that he condemned the "egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides." Many sides? This was not a case of moral equivalency, but of moral clarity. On Sunday, smarting from criticism that he hadn't explicitly condemned white nationalists, a White House spokesperson released a statement denouncing the violence and naming "white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi and all extremist groups." Trump finally bowed to growing pressure on Monday and uttered the words himself.

The Washington Post editorial board, with which I am not usually in agreement, was correct when it said Mr. Trump should have gone further. It suggested he might have said the following: "Under whatever labels and using whatever code words -- 'heritage,' 'tradition,' 'nationalism,' -- the idea that whites or any other ethnic, national or racial group is superior to another is not acceptable."

During last year's presidential campaign, David Duke endorsed Donald Trump. It took Trump a while to reject that endorsement. Duke claimed in Charlottesville that whites elected Trump. Sufficient numbers of white voters also elected Barack Obama - twice - so what's his point?

The president should say no electoral victory is worth receiving votes from people who hate their fellow countrymen. He should also say that while he cannot prevent anyone from voting for whomever they wish, he will reject any endorsements coming from hate groups.

Not much can bring us together these days, but this kind of hatred should unite all Americans who have a spark of decency in their hearts.

Charlottesville 'Unite the Right' rally turns deadly - Al Jazeera

A gathering of hundreds of white nationalists in Virginia took a deadly turn when a car ploughed into a group of counter-protesters and killed at least one person.

The state's governor blamed neo-Nazis for sparking the unrest on Saturday in the college town of Charlottesville, where rival groups fought pitched battles using rocks and pepper spray after far-right protesters converged to demonstrate against a plan to remove a statue of a Confederate war hero.

The violence is the latest clash between white supremacists - some of whom have claimed allegiance to Donald Trump - and the US president's opponents since his January inauguration.

Also fittingly, that's all there is except for some AP photos you can get anywhere. With all that oil money behind them, you'd think they could do better than that.
