Three Pennsylvania state troopers at the Amish school massacre rushed from the schoolhouse to another horrific scene - where they watched helplessly as a deranged man shot himself in the head.

The three unidentified troopers were back at work yesterday after receiving the mandatory counseling given to all troopers who worked at the schoolhouse, Pennsylvania State Police said.

"They're still on the job," said Commissioner Jeffrey Miller. "We just want to make sure we get them debriefed and reviewed and that they're cleared to go back on normal duty assignment."

The three were among the swarm of cops at the school Monday when they were sent racing to a farmhouse 18 miles away in Pequea.

Joseph Therrien, 45, had argued with his wife, then set a garage, a mobile home and two vehicles on fire, authorities said.

The troopers tried to negotiate with him to drop his gun and surrender but instead Therrien fired a bullet into his skull. He died at Lancaster General Hospital.

"They are back at work today and doing their jobs," Capt. John Laufer said of the troopers. "For most of them, doing the job is what it's all about. So that's their therapy."

State police officials were also concerned about the psychological burden faced by another unidentified trooper who held a dying girl in his arms for 40 minutes, waiting for a rescue helicopter to reach the school.

"I'm indebted to the trooper that spent the time with her and all the troopers that went out there," Miller said. "When I got out there to the scene, many of the troopers were covered with blood from triaging these patients, and they didn't skip a beat. They just kept doing their job."
