Steelers sign James Harrison
Backup linebacker James Harrison signed a four-year contract with the Steelers on Thursday.
Harrison will receive $5.5 million over the course of the contract, which included a $1.375 million signing bonus. Harrison can earn another $1 million if he becomes a starter.
"We're excited with the prospect of him staying with the Steelers. It doesn't get any better than that," Harrison's agent Bill Parise said. "We're very pleased with the contract. It's indicative of the Steelers. They're visionaries. They look down the road four to five years and want to build a football team for the future, as well."
Harrison serves as a backup at three of the four linebacker positions, including both outside spots. He started three games last season for the injured Clark Haggans and contributed 18 tackles, a sack and an interception in those contests.
He made a strong impression on at least two occasions last season -- hurdling San Diego Chargers tailback LaDainian Tomlinson on an interception return and body-slamming a fan who ran onto the field during a Christmas Eve game in Cleveland.
Harrison, 6-foot, 242 pounds, finished with 30 tackles and three sacks during the regular season. He also added 18 special-teams tackles. He missed two of four postseason games with an ankle injury but rebounded with three special-teams tackles in Super Bowl XL.
