UPI: Slovakia criticized for anti-Hungary signs

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - Criticism of Slovakia over anti-Hungarian incidents is on the rise as the two countries' leaders trade condemnations.

Harsh criticism was triggered by last week's attack on a 23-year-old ethnic-Hungarian woman, who was robbed, beaten and whose T-shirt was marked with a nationalist slogan, "Hungarians, return to behind the Danube," the EU Observer reported Monday.

The next day, police arrested three men who were carrying 36-foot-long banner reading, "Death to the Hungarians."

In Budapest, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry on Monday summoned the Slovak ambassador to explain the incidents.

Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany condemned what he called "atrocities and increasing hatred against foreigners" and demanded Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to do the same.

Fico denounced "all acts of extremism," but added it is not up to Hungary to decide when and how Slovakia should respond to incidents.

He does have a point, kiddies.

About 500,000 ethnic-Hungarians live in Slovakia.

In July, Fico's social-democrats formed a government with the far-right nationalists of Jan Slota, known for his anti-Hungarian and anti-Romany stands, the EU Observer said.
