It seems Pope Francis needs to brush up on his Tertullian!

It has been reported (in The ChristLast Media, I must note) that the current Pope does not like the phrase "lead us not into temptation...

"Let no freedom be allowed to novelty, because it is not fitting that any addition should be made to antiquity. Let not the clear faith and belief of our forefathers be fouled by any muddy admixture." -- Pope Sixtus III

The Steelers have approached these NFL playoffs with an us-against-the-world mentality.

And the chip on their shoulders is getting larger by the victory.

"We play our best football (ticked) off," linebacker Joey Porter said. "And we're in a (ticked)-off mindset right now."

Several Steelers players, led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, chastised media members awaiting entrance into their locker room following Sunday's heart-pounding, 21-18 victory over the highly favored Indianapolis Colts in an AFC divisional game at the RCA Dome.

They entered as 9 1/2-point underdogs against the top-seeded Colts, who were coming off a bye.

"Y'all want to come in now?" Roethlisberger said, admonishing the media contingent just moments after the Steelers avoided a near-catastrophe when Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt badly missed a 46-yard field goal that likely would have sent the game into overtime. "All the non-believers. You want to come in now?"

Roethlisberger was soft compared to what Porter said after this win, which earned the Steelers the distinction of being the first No. 6 seed in NFL history to reach a conference final.

They'll face the second-seeded Denver Broncos (14-3) at 3 p.m. Sunday at Invesco Field, with the winner moving on to Super Bowl XL in Detroit.

Porter accused the league of a conspiracy against the Steelers (13-5) after witnessing an interception by strong safety Troy Polamalu get reversed following video review. It seemed clear that Polmalu had possession of the ball on a diving catch -- after which he rolled on the ground, then lost it while attempting to rise to his feet -- but the officiating crew called the Colts offense back onto the field.

Four plays later, Indianapolis scored a touchdown and added a 2-point conversion to make the score 21-18 with 4:24 remaining. The Steelers ultimately survived, but only after Vanderjagt and the Colts failed to take advantage of Jerome Bettis' fumble at the Colts 2, which was returned to the 42 by Indianapolis defensive back Nick Harper with 1:01 to play.

"We dominated the whole game -- till the referees wanted to help them," Porter said.

The outspoken linebacker, who challenged the Colts' toughness in the days leading up to the game, did not stop there.

"I couldn't believe they were going to try to cheat us like that, for real," Porter said. "That was my thing. After we made that play (the near-interception), I thought the game was over. ... I'm going to get in trouble for it, I already know I'm going to get in trouble for it, but I'm ready to pay (the fine) anyway, because that's how mad I was with the refs out there. That was the worst I've ever been a part of. When you play in games, you feel (sometimes) like it might not be going your way. But that was cheatin' right there, man."

Referee Pete Morelli had a different view of things.

Do you think he has Mob ties? (I'm Italian. I can ask that.)

"I had the defender catching the ball," Morelli said in a statement. "Before he got up, he hit it with his leg, with his other leg still on the ground. Therefore, he did not complete the catch."

Porter's response?

"C'mon, y'all seen it, man," he said. "What do we gotta do to make an interception? He caught the ball, rolled on the ground, got up and knocked the ball out of his hand with his knee. How can you say that's not an interception?

"It was just one of those games, the world wanted Indy to win so bad, they were going to do whatever they could. It was like the 9/11 year when they wanted the Patriots (who beat the Steelers in the AFC final) to win it for the world, just for the patriotic of the world. That's what they wanted for Indy today. They wanted (quarterback Peyton Manning) to win that game no matter what happened. They want him to win that game and they were going to give him all the opportunities to win it."

Winners of six in a row, the fired-up Steelers jumped on the Colts, riding the arm of Roethlisberger (14 of 24 for 197 yards with two touchdowns and an interception) en route to scoring on their first and third possessions for a 14-0 lead. Roethlisberger outplayed counterpart Manning (22 of 38 for 290 yards with a touchdown), considered by many to be the best in the game, with a passer rating of 95.3 to Manning's 90.9.

The Steelers stretched their advantage to 21-3 on a 1-yard scoring run by Bettis with 1:26 left in the third quarter before the Colts made it 21-10 on a 50-yard touchdown reception by tight end Dallas Clark with 14:09 to play.
The Colts added a 3-yard score by tailback Edgerrin James after the controversial call against Polamalu.

"It doesn't matter what I think," Polamalu said when asked about the call.

"On the sports shows this week, people weren't even breaking down our game," linebacker Larry Foote said. "They were just going right to the other games, saying Indianapolis was going to beat Pittsburgh. But that doesn't matter. When the whistle blows, all that stuff is out the window."

About Me

My photo
First of all, the word is SEX, not GENDER. If you are ever tempted to use the word GENDER, don't. The word is SEX! SEX! SEX! SEX! For example: "My sex is male." is correct. "My gender is male." means nothing. Look it up. What kind of sick neo-Puritan nonsense is this? Idiot left-fascists, get your blood-soaked paws off the English language. Hence I am choosing "male" under protest.
