Pope Benedict XVI yesterday refused to declare Islam "a religion of peace."
Asked by reporters whether Islam could be considered a religion of peace shortly before entering a meeting with priests and deacons of Valle d'Aosta in northwest Italy where he is spending a brief holiday, the pontiff refused to reply positively.

"I would not like to use big words to apply generic labels," he replied. "It certainly contains elements that can favor peace, it also has other elements: We must always seek the best elements."

The day before, he asked God to stop the terrorists.

"Even these days of serenity and repose have been disrupted by the tragic news of the execrable terrorist attacks which have brought death, destruction and suffering to various countries such as Egypt, Turkey, Iraq and Great Britain," he said. "As we entrust to divine goodness the dead and injured and their loved ones, victims of gestures that offend both God and man, we call on the Almighty to block the murderous hand of those who, driven by fanaticism and hatred, committed these acts, and we ask that He convert their hearts to thoughts of reconciliation and peace."

He asked Muslims to embrace peace.

"Renounce the way of violence which causes so much suffering to civilian populations, and instead to embrace the way of peace," he said in a statement issued through Vatican Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano, in response to terrorist attacks at the popular Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh in Egypt.

Pope Benedict has yet to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflictIsrael has summoned the Vatican's ambassador to explain why the Pope left the country off a list of those recently hit by terrorism.

Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday deplored attacks in "countries including Egypt, Turkey, Iraq and Britain".

Israel said he had failed to mention a 12 July suicide bombing in Netanya that killed five Israelis.

The foreign ministry said it would be interpreted as "granting legitimacy to... terrorist attacks against Jews".

"We expected that the new Pope, who on taking office emphasised the importance he places on relations between the Church and the Jewish people, would behave differently," the ministry said in a statement.
The Vatican embassy declined to comment.

Pope Benedict has accepted an invitation to visit Israel but has yet to comment on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in public since taking office in April.

Pope condemns terror, but not against Israelis

Pope Benedict XVI faced the first major conflict of his three-month-old papacy when Israel summoned the Vatican envoy Monday and expressed outrage that the pope "deliberately failed" to condemn terrorist attacks against Israelis.

The German-born (OMG! - F.G.) Benedict, who has consistently reached out to Jews since assuming the papacy, was criticized by Israel for remarks he made Sunday from his Alpine vacation retreat in northwestern Italy.

He prayed for God to stop the "murderous hand" of terrorists and referred to the recent "abhorrent terrorist attacks" in Egypt, Britain, Turkey and Iraq but did not mention attacks in Israel.

"The pope deliberately failed to condemn the terrible terror attack that occurred in Israel last week," a Foreign Ministry statement issued in Jerusalem said.

A July 12 suicide bombing in the seaside city of Netanya killed five Israelis. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.

"We expected that the new pope, who on taking office emphasized the importance he places on relations between the Church and the Jewish people, would behave differently," the statement said.

The statement called on the pope to condemn attacks "against Jews in the same way he condemns terror attacks against others."

Later, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom appeared to soften the criticism, saying he hoped that failure to mention the attack in Netanya "was a mistake and not a deliberate omission."

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls, accompanying Benedict on vacation, issued a one-line statement saying the papal envoy "has already replied to the Israeli government." It did not elaborate.

Later, Navarro-Valls released a second statement in which he noted that Benedict's words expressly referred to terror attacks in "recent days."

"It's surprising that one would have wanted to take the opportunity to distort the intentions of the Holy Father," Navarro-Valls said in the statement.

"Obviously the other week's grave attack in Netanya referred to by Israel falls under the general and unreserved condemnation of terrorism."

Benedict has issued a series of condemnations of terrorist attacks since the July 7 London bombings.

On Monday, the pontiff said he didn't see any anti-Christian motive in the recent wave of terrorist attacks blamed on Islamic extremists and urged dialogue with the best elements of Islam.

Speaking to reporters at his vacation retreat in Les Combes, Italy, Benedict attributed the violence to "a much more general intention."
