An Answer for Bill February 1, 2011 : 11:43 AM

Last week on his show Bill O’Reilly asked, “Why has southern New York turned into the tundra?” and then said he had a call into me. I appreciate the question.

As it turns out, the scientific community has been addressing this particular question for some time now and they say that increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with what they have been predicting as a consequence of man-made global warming:

“In fact, scientists have been warning for at least two decades that global warming could make snowstorms more severe. Snow has two simple ingredients: cold and moisture. Warmer air collects moisture like a sponge until it hits a patch of cold air. When temperatures dip below freezing, a lot of moisture creates a lot of snow.”

“A rise in global temperature can create all sorts of havoc, ranging from hotter dry spells to colder winters, along with increasingly violent storms, flooding, forest fires and loss of endangered species.”

From Upper St. Clair Patch:

Steeler Nation Welcomes New Arrivals

Little Brayden McQuillan was in the world for less than ten minutes Friday morning when the staff at St. Clair Hospital wrapped him in a gold Terrible Towel and placed a Steelers knit hat on his tiny head.

“They’re born Steelers fans here in Pittsburgh,” said Sharon Johnson, clinical supervisor at the hospital’s Family Birth Center.

The staff at the hospital in Mt. Lebanon wrapped up ten newborns in the towels Friday in celebration of the Steelers’ run to Super Bowl XLV. Each baby born this week at the hospital will also be wrapped up in the black and gold, a tradition the staff also did in 2008.

First-time dad Alexander Ameredes said his wife, Rachel, gave birth to their son Alexander on Wednesday, two weeks earlier than predicted. The Collier Township man said he thinks his son wanted to make sure he was around for the big game on Feb. 6.

“I was worried about the Super Bowl,” Ameredes said. “I think he was, too."

Just a few feet away, Joe Laffey, 34, of Bethel Park was gazing at his new daughter, Annabella Grace, born just a couple of hours earlier. Laffey said he and his girlfriend, Samantha Grimm, found out the due date a few months ago and he immediately went to check if it would coincide with the game.

“I already knew when the Super Bowl was, so I did the math and saw it was the bye week,” Laffey said. “I kept telling her during the AFC Championship game, ‘Don’t let your water break!’ I got all hyped up, but she tried to stay relaxed.”

He said the towel blanketing his new daughter would be a lucky charm for the family.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Laffey said. “I got a new baby and a new Terrible Towel. Couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Justin Eitel of Mt. Lebanon couldn’t help but take at least 50 snapshots of his new daughter wrapped up in the towel. He had no doubts about which team she would be rooting for when she grows up.

"She can choose her religion,” Eitel said, “but she can't choose what team she likes."

But it wasn’t just the fathers who were beaming with joy.

Dr. Paul Zubritzky, an obstetrician at St. Clair, delivered four of the babies, including little Brayden just in time to receive his new Steelers swag. He said the mother heard about what was happening and wanted her new son to be part of the celebration.

“She worked hard and got it done, just like the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Zubritzky said. “It’s a special time. You feel like you’re a part of it.”

The hospital previously did this two years ago before the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII. This around time, though, they had trouble finding Terrible Towels because of the demand before this year’s game.

Destinie Main of Scenery Hill hoped the birth of her second son, Noah, would bring another championship to Pittsburgh. Her first son, Kaden, was born October 2008 and the team won another Lombardi Trophy a few months later.

“We’re hoping this is our second good luck charm,” Main said. “He came with his own Terrible Towel.”

Her fiancĂ©, Ray Ayres, didn’t have a doubt which team his new son would be rooting for come next Sunday.

“You don’t have to make them fans,” Ayres said. “They’re born Steelers fans here.”

Ephrata Playhouse in the Park renamed for 2 longtime benefactors

Like many theater companies, the Ephrata Performing Arts Center has been facing tough economic times.

Having to pay off a huge mortgage/construction debt after the theater was rebuilt in 2003 has made those tough times even harder.

Enter a theater angel.

Terry Bigler, through the Michael Sharadin-Terry Bigler Fund, has donated $400,000 to EPAC to help pay off the debt over the next ten years.

In recognition of that generosity, the theater building, long called the Playhouse in the Park, is now the Sharadin Bigler Theatre.

"It's a good way to honor Michael now that he's gone," Bigler said. "Michael always loved theater and EPAC. I picked it up when we got together."

Bigler, who owns Zeller Travel, and Sharadin, who ran his family business, Mi-Jan Fabrics, were partners for 27 years before Sharadin's death in 2006.

Did you ever wonder why the "compassionate humanitarians" desperately want kids chopped into pieces?

Jennifer Love Hewitt Has 3 Engagement Rings Picked Out Just in Case

Unlike a slew of Hollywood stars, Jennifer Love Hewitt isn't engaged yet -- but she's got her Tiffany engagement ring all picked out. Three of them, in fact.

"I actually have three because I feel like I'm doing the guy a favor," Hewitt, 31, explains during a Tuesday appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

No, I don't think she sounds crazy. Desperate maybe, but not crazy.

PHOTOS: What Jennifer and other stars wore to the Globes

"Women are very confusing. We never know what we want and we're not very good at nailing that down for them. I feel like I don't want to be upset if he picks a bad ring" explains the Lost Valentine star, who's been dating Alex Beh for about 7 months.

But not desperate enough to call ol' Fyodor.

Hewitt has never been married before -- but broke off her engagement to actor Ross McCall in early 2008.

PHOTOS: Stars' blingy engagement rings

But she's all set should Beh or another suitor bring up matrimony. "If it gets to that conversation. If marriage comes up, I'm like, "You know what's so weird. There is this store [Tiffany's] and there are three rings in it... And if you chose one of these three, I'm going to be really excited. And if you go off on your own, we can have an awful, awkward moment. So why would you want to do that?"

BTW, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Jen's backside.

'Honor killing' trial starts Monday in Phoenix

An Iraqi immigrant accused of killing his daughter because he believed she was too Westernized is going on trial in a case prosecutors call an "honor killing."

Police allege Faleh Almaleki slammed his Jeep into his 20-year-old daughter, Noor Almaleki, and her boyfriend's mother in the parking lot of a state Department of Economic Security office in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria in 2009.

The mother lived, but Noor was in a coma for two weeks before she died from her injuries.

Almaleki, 50, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a serious injury accident.

A jury will hear opening statements Monday in the murder case. Plea negotiations that had been under way for weeks failed just before jury selection began last week. His attorneys have not disclosed their defense strategy publicly.

The case caused outrage after prosecutors deemed Noor's death an "honor killing" because Almaleki had said his daughter dishonored his family and became too Westernized.

EPA decision to allow more ethanol gets mixed reviews
- Winona Daily News

The ethanol industry has won another round in its fight to put more of the corn-based bio-fuel into gasoline. The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday cleared use of 15 percent ethanol/gas blends for all vehicles made between 2001 and 2006.

But there's still a lot of opposition to "E15," as it's known.

Ethanol industry officials have been trying for almost two years to push E15 to the marketplace. Last October, the EPA approved the 15 percent blend for vehicles made in 2007 and later.

The agency's latest decision allows the fuel to be used in vehicles manufactured in 2001 or later, and is a significant step forward in boosting ethanol use, said Brian Jennings, executive vice president of the American Coalition for Ethanol.

"We're really pleased that EPA finally came forth with a decision regarding E15, that indicates a majority of the cars on the road can use the product," Jennings said.

That's about 150 million vehicles. But Jennings acknowledges there are still many hurdles to clear before E15 shows up at gas stations.

Several groups have sued to block sale of the fuel. They include some financially powerful organizations tied to the oil industry, such as the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association. It contends the EPA's testing of E15 has not been extensive enough to prove the 15 percent blend is safe for car and truck engines.

Another issue is how E15 will be labeled at the pump. The EPA has proposed a label which starts with the word ‘caution' followed by an exclamation point. Ethanol industry officials say that wording would scare consumers away from using the new ethanol blend.

Jennings expects the legal and labeling issues to be resolved. That would allow E15 to appear in the marketplace before year's end.

"I think it would be October of this year perhaps at the soonest," he said.

When E15 does reach the marketplace, it's unknown how many gas stations will decide to sell it.

Jeff Lenard, a spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores, which represents about 50,000 U.S. gasoline sellers, said many now sell 10 percent ethanol. He said stores will have to install new pumps, at $20,000 each, to handle the 15 percent blend.

Lenard said about 60 percent of the convenience stores in the U.S. are owned by individuals with limited financing. He doubts many will want to risk the money it will take to sell E15.

"It's probably well beyond their resources," Lenard said. "So you're looking at a fairly limited audience for the concept of selling E15 down the road."

Even with the hurdles though, ethanol supporters say the EPA's E15 decision is beneficial. Last year, the industry produced about 13 billion gallons of the fuel, consuming more than a third of the nation's corn crop.

By allowing more ethanol per gallon of fuel, the E15 decision will boost production and sales of ethanol, leaving the industry with another potential headache, supporters say.

With food prices already on the rise, more ethanol production could reignite complaints that the industry's demand for corn is fueling inflation.

...and the answer is NEVER.

Sen. Williams loses powerful post after fatal crash in Texas

State Sen. Suzanne Williams, D-Aurora, won't be promoted, as was expected, to chairwoman of the powerful Transportation Committee because of the fatal crash she caused in Texas last month, Majority Leader John Morse, D-Colorado Springs, said Monday.

We now move to further action.

The Dec. 26 crash critically injured Williams' 41-year-old son, Todd Edward Williams, and killed a pregnant woman, Brianna "Brie" Gomez, 30, of Amarillo, Texas, a passenger in the sport utility vehicle that Williams hit. Doctors were able to deliver Gomez's son, 3-pound Curran Blaec Gomez.

Ok, kiddies, here comes the good stuff.

The findings of the investigation into why Williams swerved into the path of oncoming traffic are expected to be presented to a grand jury.

Williams has said she doesn't remember what happened. Her son and two grandsons were passengers in her Honda CR-V when it collided with the Gomez family's GMC Yukon on U.S. 385 in Hartley County, Texas, about 40 miles northwest of Amarillo.

Brianna Gomez, who was seven months pregnant, grew up in the town of Ouray before moving to Dalhart, Texas, in her senior year in high school to live with her father.

Williams, an advocate for seat-belt laws, especially for children, was buckled in, but none of her passengers were. [Emphasis mine. - F.G.] Texas law requires all occupants to wear seat belts. A violation is punishable by a $500 fine.

In an initial report, Texas troopers found that Williams had returned her 3-year-old grandson to his car seat after he was ejected from the vehicle. [Emphasis mine - F.G.]

McCaskey tries new mentoring program - LancasterOnline.com

During a recent class period at McCaskey East High School, T'onna Johnson's class discussed a film, learned about a college-visit trip, talked about designing a class T-shirt and was encouraged to sign up for a seminar on the importance of a good education.

This all happened during homeroom — that fleeting period when teachers take attendance, principals make announcements and students, usually, don't do much of anything.

Not at McCaskey East.

Every junior at the school has been paired with an adult homeroom mentor who tries to squeeze as much information and activities as possible into six minutes each day and 20 minutes twice a month.

The intent of the program, implemented in mid-December, is simple, principal Bill Jimanez said: "Let's make these guys think for six minutes about their future."

Every junior — the class that will take PSSA tests this year — was matched with a teacher who already had a relationship with that pupil.

But in the case of T'onna's class, there are other ties that bind the homeroom.

Every pupil is a black female. And their mentors are both female African-Americans. Across the hall, two homerooms of black male students are led by black men.

The all-black homerooms are part of an experiment to determine if grouping students homogeneously for a brief period each day will help them socially and academically.

"At first I was kind of like iffy because why would we be in homeroom together?" T'onna recalled. "But we work together and we do problems together, so I like it.

"Here we learn about how we can basically make a difference and how we don't have to settle for less."

The idea originated with Angela Tilghman, a McCaskey East instructional coach who was alarmed at the poor academic performance of the school's black students.

Only about a third of McCaskey's African-Americans scored proficient or advanced in reading on last year's PSSAs, compared with 60 percent of white students and 42 percent of all students.

Math scores were even worse, with just 27 percent of black pupils scoring proficient or advanced.

Research has shown, Tilghman said, that grouping black students by gender with a strong role model can help boost their academic achievement and self-esteem.

She and fellow instructional coach Rhauni Gregory volunteered to mentor the African-American girls, and Michael Mitchell and Willie Thedford each took a homeroom of black males.

No other students were divided by race, Jimanez said, although pupils enrolled in the school's English language learners program were paired with ELL teachers.

Initially, some McCaskey East students and staff objected to separating out black students. Some juniors asked to go back to their old homerooms. Others complained that the experiment ran counter to the culture of McCaskey, long a melting pot of students and staff from many diverse backgrounds.

But Jimanez said the academic data dictated the school take a different approach with its black students.

"One of the things we said when we did this was, 'Let's look at the data, let's not run from it,' " he said. "Let's confront it and see what we can do about it."

In all homerooms, teachers are tracking their students' grades, test scores and attendance and encouraging them to engage in discussions around "goal setting and self-actualization," Jimanez said.

If the "data" do indeed indicate this is the proper course of action, why don't we build exclusively black schools and exclusively latino public schools? Then we would need white schools, asian schools, and schools only for Pacific Islanders.

I am only following the "data" to its logical conclusion. It seems the left-fascists can't even keep their own ignorant party line straight in their tiny little brains.

The lesson to be learned here, kiddies, is an oldie but a goodie. GET YOUR KIDS OUT OF THE GOVERNMENT INDOCTRINATION CENTERS AT ALL COSTS.

Rick Santorum cuts through Okhrana's babykilling crap.

From Yahoo! News:

Rick Santorum invokes Obama’s race in abortion debate

Rick Santorum says President Obama should be against abortion because Obama is black.

The Republican ex-senator, who is exploring a possible 2012 presidential bid, made the comments interview with CNSNews.com's Terry Jeffrey.

"The question is -- and this is what Barack Obama didn't want to answer: Is that human life a person under the Constitution? And Barack Obama says no," Santorum says in the interview, which was first picked up by CBN's David Brody. "Well if that person, human life is not a person, then, I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say, 'We are going to decide who are people and who are not people.'"

Exactly!

Santorum was referring to Obama's comments at a 2008 forum with Pastor Rick Warren in which he said the question of whether a baby should have human rights was "above my pay grade." Obama later said his remark was too flip, but "I don't presume to be able to answer these kinds of theological questions."

Santorum took Obama to task for his position.

"Just about everything else in the world he's willing to do -- have the government do -- but he can't answer that basic question which is not a debatable issue at all," Santorum told Jeffrey. "I don't think you'll find a biologist in the world who will say that is not a human life."

The Atlantic's Garance Franke-Ruta points out that anti-abortion activists have raised the race issue before -- for example, seeing an "equivalent denial of personhood for two different categories of human beings, slaves and unborn children."

Don't ever forget that a disproportionate number of murdered kids are black. And Planned Parenthood was created to cut down the number of blacks in this country.

In a statement to CBN's Brody, Santorum stood behind his comment, says he's "disappointed that President Obama, who rightfully fights for civil rights, refuses to recognize the civil rights of the unborn in this country."

Where are the sweeps of Russian mobsters? What about the Triads and the Yakuza? What about all those vile Jewish gangsters on Wall Street who are continuing to make Dumbo the Presiphant sweat his reelection by refusing to create jobs and taxable income?

From the Hamilton Spectator:

FBI whacks mob with 127 arrests

In a mob bust described as the largest in FBI history, law enforcement officials Thursday said they had charged 127 members of the nation’s leading Mafia groups with crimes such as murder and drug trafficking and had arrested 110 of them in early-morning sweeps in three states and Italy.

By early Thursday, TV stations showed some of the suspects — mainly middle-aged or older men — being brought in for processing, their wrists handcuffed, bellies bulging over loose jeans and sweatpants. Many had nicknames that read like a Hollywood script: “Lumpy,” “Johnny Pizza,” “The Bull,” “Baby Fat,” “Mush,” “Jello,” and “Meatball” among them.

You can tell organized crime is in trouble because the nicknames are getting so lame. "Vinny Carwash"? Really? Unless he takes bets in the middle of a car wash while wearing a wetsuit, that's pathetic.

Some of the crimes linked to the suspects date back 30 years, including a barroom quarrel over a spilled drink that led to a double murder. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, flanked by local, state and federal officials, said more than 800 law enforcement agents were involved in the arrests, which began as many suspects were sleeping in their homes in New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island. One suspect was arrested in Italy. A total of 16 indictments encompassing hundreds of charges were unsealed.

Holder described some of the crimes as “classic mob hits” to get rid of perceived rivals, and standard mob activities such as racketeering and illegal gambling. “Others involve truly senseless murders,” Holder said, referring to the 1981 shooting at the Shamrock Bar in Queens as an example. The U.S. attorney’s office said that two men were killed after getting into an argument with an associate of the Gambino crime family over a spilled drink.

Wow, he's a regular Untouchable. What if members of the Sons Of Italy had scared black folks away from a Philly polling place? This clown would have called in Lon Horiuchi's Death Squad immediately.

“Our goal is to eradicate these folks as menaces to this nation,” said Holder, who said the mob’s ability to undermine local economies through loan-sharking and extortion of legitimate business owners was as much a threat as its use of violence. “It is an ongoing threat, a major threat, to the economic well-being of our nation,” he said.

No, dumbass. Getting shot in the back of the head and dumped in a landfill is worse.

Scam Of The Day.

From Shutdown Corner:

NFL to charge people $200 to stand outside Super Bowl stadium

For one-third the price of a regular ticket, NFL fans will be able to stand outside Cowboys Stadium and act like they are attending the Super Bowl XLV. The league announced on Wednesday that tickets to watch the game on large HD video screens on the east side of the stadium will cost $200.

They're calling it the "party plaza," because what's more of a party than spending two bills to go through a security line for the right to sit on a grassy knoll, pay $9 for a beer and watch a game that's freely available on television?

[Related: How Super Bowl ticket prices compare to other sports]

Tickets will first be offered to Cowboys season-ticket holders who will have to buy in blocks of four. The $800 will cover four tickets to watch the game, four programs, four scarves and a parking pass. Scarves? For that price, they better be Burberry.

"We've never done this before," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told ESPN Dallas of the league's plan to price-gouge folks who want to attend the Super Bowl without actually attending the Super Bowl.

[Related: Worst cities to be a sports fan]

Besides additional revenue, the biggest upside for the Cowboys is that those buying tickets to the party plaza will count toward the game's official attendance. Jerry Jones has expressed a desire to break the Super Bowl record for biggest crowd, which was set in 1980 when 103,985 attended the game at the Rose Bowl.

How people standing outside a stadium counts as attendance is beyond me. If you're standing next to an unplugged TV, does that mean you'll be tallied in the Nielsen ratings?

You wouldn't understand. It's a Pittsburgh thing.

Myron Cope left us in 2008. He was the perfect antidote for bland talking head broadcasters. It would be silly for the Steelers to try to win another Super Bowl for a dead radio guy, wouldn't it?

PHILADELPHIA – An abortion doctor who catered to minorities, immigrants and poor women [Well, they've got to get rid of those wogs some how. - F.G.] was charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of a patient and seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors, prosecutors said Wednesday.

That's just partial birth abortion, isn't it? Since when is that illegal?

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 69, made millions of dollars over 30 years, [$$$$$$$$!] performing as many illegal, late-term abortions as he could, prosecutors said. State regulators ignored complaints about him and failed to visit or inspect his clinic since 1993, but no charges were warranted against them, District Attorney Seth Williams said.

Totalitarian Pennsylvania strikes again! I guess we can't expect them to enforce all the laws, can we? Especially the ones that might keep some of those vile fetuses alive...

Gosnell "induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord," Williams said.

This is the current definition of "humanitarian", kiddies. Compassionate liberals know it is better that those things be butchered rather than grow up poor and black.

[When I use the word "butchered", that is obviously hyperbole. If cattle or pigs or chickens were treated like that, the compassionate liberals would fire-bomb every meatpacking plant to the ground.]

Williams said patients were subjected to squalid and barbaric conditions at Gosnell's Women's Medical Society.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Women's Medical Society! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Authorities went to investigate drug-related complaints at the clinic last year and stumbled on what Williams called a "house of horrors."

"There were bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses were scattered throughout the building," Williams said. "There were jars, lining shelves, with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose."

I'll bet they wouldn't ever let Wes Craven make that movie.

The clinic was shut down and Gosnell's medical license was suspended after the raid.

Workers, some of whom were also charged with murder, were untrained and unlicensed, including a high-school student who performed anesthesia with potentially lethal narcotics, Williams said.

Gosnell and nine other employees are in custody, authorities said.

Gosnell has been named in at least 10 malpractice suits, including one over the death of a woman who died of sepsis and a perforated uterus.

May God have mercy on our souls.

From the people who brought the NFL to Jacksonville, it's Zodiac Expansion!

Ophiuchus - The 13th Sign of the Zodiac

The 13th sign of the zodiac, unlike the other 12 signs is actually associated with a real person. In the 27th Century BCE in Ancient Egypt lived a man known as Imhotep. Imhotep was known as ‘Aesclepius’ by the Ancient Greeks, however the attributes are the same under either name.

Wait a minute... isn't that the creepy mummy dude who tried to whack Brendan Fraser?
Arnold Vosloo ...

One of Imhoteps abilities was healing and it is said that it was he who introduced it to mankind. His accomplishments also included a wide knowledge of medicine. The serpent or snake symbol which is still used today to symbolize the medical profession was also used to represent Imhotep. Below is a list of attributes associated with the Serpent Holder, Imhotep i.e Aesclepius. The descriptions below are associated with the 13th sign - Ophiuchus.
  • Many people are envious of this subject as he progresses well throughout life.
  • A seeker of wisdom and knowledge [Yeah, right.]
  • Many people are jealous of this person [That's a bit redundant, eh, kiddies? See bullet point # 1 above.]
  • Tends to go for the more flamboyant in dress sense, favouring bright colours. [Uh-oh. Flamboyant.]
  • Authority looks upon him well. [Fascist.]
  • Would make a great architect or builder. [Ayn Rand, call your office.]
  • Number 12 is this persons lucky number. [That should help Ophiuchuleans win the Powerball drawing every time.]
  • This person will have a big family but leave home at an early age. [In this era of Big Contraception and 26 year olds on their parents' insurance policy? I think not.]

This is the Zodiac as some astrologers believe it should be:

ARIES = APRIL 19 - MAY 13
TAURUS = MAY 14 - JUNE 19
GEMINI = JUNE 20 - JULY 20
CANCER = JULY 21 - AUG 9
LEO = AUGUST 10 - SEPTEMBER 15
VIRGO = SEPTEMBER 16 - OCTOBER 30
LIBRA = OCTOBER 31 - NOVEMBER 22
SCORPIO = NOVEMBER 23 - NOVEMBER 29
OPHIUCHUS = NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 17
SAGITTARIUS = DECEMBER 18 - JANUARY 18
CAPRICORN = JANUARY 19 - FEBRUARY 15
AQUARIUS = FEBRUARY 16 - MARCH 11
PISCES = MARCH 12 - APRIL 18

THIS MESSAGE IS FOR WHATEVER REMNANT OF HUMANITY EXISTS IN THE YEAR 6710 [I KNOW WE ALL HOPE AND PRAY OUR BLOGS WILL STILL BE READABLE THEN.]:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ADD A NEW SIGN TO YOUR ZODIAC. IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THE HEAD OF A MAN OF MIXED RACE WITH ELEPHANTINE EARS, FANGS THAT DRIP BLOOD, AND IT SHOULD VOMIT EXCREMENT PERIODICALLY. IT SHALL BE CALLED DUMBOCULOUS AFTER THE GREATEST LAWGIVER OF ALL TIME. KIDDIES BORN UNDER THE SIGN OF DUMBOCULOUS WILL LIE, CHEAT, STEAL, AND KILL TO ACHIEVE PEACE AND HARMONY.

They saved Hitler's brain!

Scientists find 34,000-year-old organisms still alive

It's a tale that has all the trappings of a cult 1960s sci-fi movie: Scientists bring back ancient salt crystals, dug up from deep below Death Valley for climate research. The sparkling crystals are carefully packed away until, years later, a young, unknown researcher takes a second look at the 34,000-year-old crystals and discovers, trapped inside, something strange. Something ... alive.

Thankfully this story doesn't end with the destruction of the human race, but with a satisfied scientist finishing his Ph.D.

"It was actually a very big surprise to me," said Brian Schubert, who discovered ancient bacteria living within tiny, fluid-filled chambers inside the salt crystals.

Salt crystals grow very quickly, imprisoning whatever happens to be floating - or living - nearby inside tiny bubbles just a few microns across, akin to naturally made, miniature snow-globes.

"It's permanently sealed inside the salt, like little time capsules," said Tim Lowenstein, a professor in the geology department at Binghamton University and Schubert's advisor at the time.

Lowenstein said new research indicates this process occurs in modern saline lakes, further backing up Schubert's astounding discovery, which was first revealed about a year ago. The new findings, along with details of Schubert's work, are published in the January 2011 edition of GSA Today, the publication of the Geological Society of America.

Schubert, now an assistant researcher at the University of Hawaii, said the bacteria - a salt-loving sort still found on Earth today - were shrunken and small, and suspended in a kind of hibernation state.

"They're alive, but they're not using any energy to swim around, they're not reproducing," Schubert told OurAmazingPlanet. "They're not doing anything at all except maintaining themselves."

The key to the microbes' millennia-long survival may be their fellow captives - algae, of a group called Dunaliella.

"The most exciting part to me was when we were able to identify the Dunaliella cells in there," Schubert said, "because there were hints that could be a food source."

With the discovery of a potential energy source trapped alongside the bacteria, it has begun to emerge that, like an outlandish Dr. Seuss invention (hello, Who-ville), these tiny chambers could house entire, microscopic ecosystems.

Schubert and Lowenstein are not the first to uncover organisms that are astonishingly long-lived. About a decade ago, there were claims of discoveries of 250-million-year-old bacteria. The results weren't reproduced, and remain controversial.

Schubert, however, was able to reproduce his results. Not only did he grow the same organisms again in his own lab, he sent crystals to another lab, which then got the same results.

"So this wasn't something that was just a contaminant from our lab," Schubert said.

The next step for researchers is to figure out how the microbes, suspended in a starvation-survival mode for so many thousands of years, managed to stay viable.

"We're not sure what's going on," Lowenstein said. "They need to be able to repair DNA, because DNA degrades with time."

Schubert said the microbes took about two-and-a-half months to "wake up" out of their survival state before they started to reproduce, behavior that has been previously documented in bacteria, and a strategy that certainly makes sense.

"It's 34,000 years old and it has a kid," Schubert said. And ironically, once that happens, the new bacteria are, of course, entirely modern.

It's time to stop acting like slaves, boys.

Galatians 4:4-7

4
At ubi venit plenitudo temporis, misit Deus Filium suum factum ex muliere, factum sub lege,

4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent his Son, made of a woman, made under the law:
5 That he might redeem them who were under the law: that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying: Abba, Father.
7 Therefore, now he is not a servant, but a son. And if a son, an heir also through God.

U.S. EPA Removes Saccharin From List Of Hazardous Substances

Saccharin, an artificial sweetener in the form of a white crystalline powder, is 300 times sweeter than sucrose or sugar. It is typically an ingredient in diet soft drinks, juices, sweets, and chewing gum. Saccharin can also be found in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

In December, 2010, EPA amended its regulations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to remove saccharin and its salts from the lists of hazardous constituents and commercial chemical products which are hazardous wastes when discarded or intended to be discarded.

EPA also amended the regulations under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) to remove saccharin and its salts from the list of hazardous substances.

In response to a petition submitted to EPA by the Calorie Control Council (CCC) to remove saccharin and its salts from RCRA and CERCLA, EPA will no longer list these substances as hazardous on the above mentioned lists.

EPA granted CCC's petition based on a review of the evaluations conducted by key public health agencies concerning the carcinogenic and other potential toxicological effects of saccharin and its salts. In addition, EPA assessed the waste generation and management information for saccharin and its salts, concluding that the wastes do not meet the criteria for hazardous waste regulations.

American Legion Applauds House's Constitutional Reading

"Music to America's ears," was how The American Legion's National Commander characterized today's reading of the U.S. Constitution on the floor of the House of Representatives.

"The Constitution should be revered by all Americans but it is especially so by the veterans of this country, all of whom swore an oath to defend this document with their lives," said National Commander Jimmie L. Foster. "While The American Legion has its own constitution under which it operates, it is the U.S. Constitution that guides our reason for existing. The freedoms which it guarantees are the values that many of our brothers- and sisters- in-arms have died for. We operate a number of youth programs designed to instill a deep appreciation for this remarkable document among the next generation. The American Legion applauds Congress for providing this poignant reminder of America's greatness."

Speaking of the Jews, their crackup continues apace.

Challenging orthodoxies, Shas maverick seeks to put Israeli haredim to work

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Not so long ago, few Israelis had heard of Rabbi Chaim Amsellem, a soft-spoken Shas backbencher in the Knesset.

Over the past few weeks, however, Amsellem has emerged as a maverick in Israeli politics. Having broken ranks with the Orthodox-oriented Shas and its haredi leaders, he is talking about establishing a new party to challenge for the Sephardic vote.

It’s not so much the politics that makes Amsellem’s move significant; the chances are slim that other Shas Knesset members will break with the party to join Amsellem.

Rather, Amsellem’s very public rejection of Shas orthodoxy is part of an emerging movement in the Israeli Sephardic world against the rigid Orthodoxy that Shas leaders have tried to impose on followers.

Indeed, Amsellem speaks of nothing less than a Sephardic "social and cultural revolution," which his new party would both tap into and promote.

At the heart of the movement is a novel reassessment of the idea of the "society of Torah scholars," perhaps the most fundamental formative principle of the haredi world.

Both Shas and the Ashkenazi haredi parties hold that virtually all young haredi men should devote themselves solely to Torah study, as a society of Torah scholars who are exempted from mandatory army service as long as they stay in the yeshiva. This has led to deep poverty in the haredi community because rather than serve in the Israel Defense Forces, many haredi men choose to stay on indefinitely in the yeshivas.

Amsellem and others want to change this approach. Amsellem advocates a society of Torah scholars comprising only a small elite of specially gifted students, with all others serving in the army and joining the labor force. This, he argues, is the true, more lenient Sephardic approach: a productive, working life combined with Torah study whenever time allows. Amsellem says excessive Ashkenazi or "Lithuanian" influence led Sephardim to embrace the model of an all-inclusive society of Torah scholars.

Now, he says, it’s time to break free from such thinking, mainly because it perpetuates a state of poverty among the haredim.

Good luck, Rabbi. You will need it.

"Our goal is that people who genuinely study should get a real cost-of-living stipend, not just pennies,” Amsellem told JTA in an interview. “This will be possible only when those who are genuinely part of the society of Torah scholars devote themselves to study, and those who aren't combine Torah study and work, the way the Sephardim down the ages have always done.”

Amsellem's ideas reflect major social changes already under way in the haredi world.

"Over the past few years we are witnessing a dramatic increase in the number of haredim enlisting in the army,” said Asher Cohen, a Bar-Ilan University political scientist who focuses on religious parties and movements. “We also see a growing trend of both men and women going to colleges of higher education. People are trying to break out of the vicious cycle of poverty, as happens in any normal society. They are studying and looking for work."

Cohen believes the notion of the society of Torah scholars is already collapsing; it’s just that haredi leaders are not ready to admit it or condone it.

The numbers alone suggest that something serious is happening. A decade ago, hardly any haredim served in the IDF. When a special haredi infantry battalion was established in 1999, it had just 30 soldiers. Today it numbers more than 1,000, including three companies at various stages of training and two combat units. Another 1,000 haredim serve in special haredi technological units in the Air Force, Navy and intelligence corps.

In Israel, where the IDF is a vehicle for giving young Israelis marketable skills for later in life, these numbers are significant not just to the military but for Israeli society as a whole: These haredim are picking up skills for the job market.

An additional 1,000 haredim are enrolled in National Service, an alternative to military service that makes it possible for them to join the job market without being drafted into the IDF.

The number of haredim studying mainly vocational secular subjects in haredi colleges or secular colleges with special programs for haredim has more than quadrupled since 2005, to approximately 5,000. Most of the students are women -- many of them, ironically, in institutions supported by Shas.

The government also is playing a key role. Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar has proposed a blueprint to increase the numbers by another 3,000 over the next five years. The Trade and Industry Ministry has launched special vocational courses for haredim and offers incentives to businesses that employ them.

These programs clearly are meeting a growing need. In a recent poll conducted by Chakima, an institute that helps haredim prepare for higher education, 53 percent of haredim said they would be interested in studying for a secular profession in a religious, gender-segregated classroom environment.

The new trend seems to be fueled by a confluence of interest between haredim desperate to break out of the cycle of poverty and a government eager to bring them into the labor force. Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz has even suggested waiving for haredim the national requirement to serve in the IDF, so they can go straight into the workforce.

Employment of haredi men will increase rapidly over the next decade, the Ministry of Trade and Industry forecasts. Some Israelis are talking about the emergence of a haredi middle class.

Others, however, see a much slower change. They note that some 50,000 haredi students still have IDF exemptions that are valid only as long as they stay in yeshiva and don't work (until a certain age).

Holding back change are haredi leaders who believe that dramatic or rapid change may destroy the very fabric of haredi society.

"It's only happening at a snail's pace because there is no real leadership," Amsellem said. "No one has stood up and openly said this is the way things ought to be except me."

Amsellem wants to build a genuinely socially concerned party independent of rabbinic fiat. Unlike conventional haredi Orthodoxy, which turns its back on modernity and often on the secular Israeli state, Amsellem is willing to entertain a working symbiosis between haredi Orthodoxy and the modern world. He also is unabashedly ready to call himself a Zionist.

His positions have earned him rogue status in Shas. In late November, the Shas Council of Torah Sages expelled Amsellem from the party and demanded that he hand over the Knesset seat he had won on the Shas ticket. Amsellem refused, resulting in a campaign of discreditation. Placards in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak compared Amsellem to Amalek, the biblical Israelites' worst enemy.

Among the haredi leadership, Amsellem is very much a lone figure. His ideas, however, enjoy wide public support. In an early December poll by the Panels Research Institute, 52 percent of Israelis polled said enlisting haredim in the army and having them join the workforce was the only way to save haredi society. An astonishingly high 22 percent of haredim concurred.

Despite evidence of some support among haredim for such change, the chances of Amsellem being politically successful are minimal as long as Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the nonagenarian spiritual mentor of the Shas Party, is alive. His impolitic remarks about non-Jews notwithstanding, Yosef commands universal praise within Shas, and even from Amsellem.

"I don't think anyone could defy Rabbi Ovadia and win votes," Bar-Ilan University's Cohen observed. "And I don't see rabbis, even those who say privately that Amsellem is right, joining a political movement that challenges a rabbinical authority of Ovadia's stature."

From IsraelNationalNews.com:

Egyptian Official Blames Mossad for Sinai Shark Attacks

Egypt's Governor of southern Sinai lays the blame for recent shark attacks on Israel's foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad. Southern Sinai Governor Abed Al-Fadij said: “We must not discount the possibility that Mossad threw the shark into the sea, in order to attack tourists who are having fun in Sharm al-Sheikh.”

"Mossad is trying to hurt Egyptian tourism in any way possible, and the shark is one way for it to realize its plan,” he explained.

Last Thursday, Egyptians killed two sharks that were suspected in a series of attacks on bathers. One of the sharks was 2.1 meters long and weighed 150 kg. The other was 30 cm longer and weighed 250 kg.

In the last few days, Egypt has lifted the ban on bathing that was issued after four Russian tourists were attacked by sharks.

And from The Register:

MOSSAD SPY VULTURE seized in Saudi Arabia

A cunning Israeli plan to use Mossad-operated spy vultures to glean valuable intelligence on Arab nations went seriously awry when one of the feathered spooks was arrested in rural Saudi Arabia.

According to Israel's Ha'aretz, government operatives' attempts to disguise the bird as a participant in a vulture migratory study - by equipping it with a GPS transmitter and a tag bearing the ID code "R65" and "Tel Aviv University" - didn't fool locals, who quickly alerted the powers that be.

Residents and on-the-spot reporters were happy to denounce this "Zionist plot" to Saudi Arabia's Al-Weeam newspaper, and the black helicopters were soon circling in force as the accusations went viral and "hundreds of posts on Arabic-language websites and forums" decried the vulturine black op.

Claims that Israel is mounting a zoological assault outside its borders are not without precedent. Sinai regional governer Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha recently suggested that a shark which killed and maimed tourists off the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh was playing Jaws at the behest of Israeli agents.

Reports that the beast was equipped with a frikkin' laser stamped "Made in USA" are unconfirmed.

First of all, the word is SEX, not GENDER. If you are ever tempted to use the word GENDER, don't. The word is SEX! SEX! SEX! SEX! For example: "My sex is male." is correct. "My gender is male." means nothing. Look it up. What kind of sick neo-Puritan nonsense is this? Idiot left-fascists, get your blood-soaked paws off the English language.
