Atheist allowed to wear ‘pastafarian’ pasta strainer in license photo
Score one for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
When Niko Alm, an Austrian member of the U.S. based atheist group, presents his driver’s license from now on, it will show him wearing a pasta strainer on his head.
Alm told Austrian officials the headgear was a requirement of the “pastafarian’ faith.
The BBC reports he was allowed to wear the strainer for the photo because his “face was fully visible in the photo.” Alm was, however, required to submit a doctor’s certificate affirming he was “psychologically fit” to drive a car.
Alm first applied for the license three years ago in response to the Austrian government allowing confessional headgear in ID photographs.
The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a tongue-in-cheek organization that satirizes organized religion, touted Alm’s win on its website this week.
Alm told Austrian news agencies his next step will be to petition for pastafarianism to be recognized as an official religion.
