Undoubtedly, moderate mohammedans want you to know they will immediately and without hesitation report such activity to their friendly neighborhood law enforcement agents or the FBI.

In all likelihood, moderate mohammedans also want everyone to know they love democracy, republicanism, freedom of religion, and reality.

Congratulations, Trish Stratus.

TORONTO (CP) - Trish Stratus went out with a bang. Edge left the ring a banged-up mess.

Toronto-area wrestlers gained one championship and lost another Sunday at Unforgiven, World Wrestling Entertainment's September pay-per-view. Stratus, who officially retired after Unforgiven, defeated arch-rival Lita to claim the WWE Women's Championship. The 30-year-old tearfully waved to the sold-out Air Canada Centre crowd after she captured the title for a record seventh time.

Stratus, who is set to be married Sept. 30, subdued Lita using the Sharpshooter, a submission manoeuvre made famous by Calgary native and WWE Hall of Fame grappler Bret (Hitman) Hart.

ESPN: USC complains Musberger gave away team sign

Southern California formally complained that ABC-TV's Brent Musburger revealed privileged information in play-by-play commentary during Saturday's game against Nebraska.

The university sent a letter to ESPN, which oversees sports programming on ABC, saying Musburger, with less than 10 minutes to play and the Trojans leading 21-10, began describing how USC quarterback John David Booty lets receivers know he has spotted a certain kind of coverage.

"John David told us that his signal when he finds one-on-one and they're coming, it's that 'hang loose,' that familiar sign you've seen surfers use," said Musburger, referring to the sign where the thumb and little finger are raised.

USC sports information director Tim Tessalone sent a formal complaint to ESPN/ABC game producer Bill Bonnell on Monday and sent a copy to the Pacific-10 conference office.

In a letter to ESPN, USC said it considered the discussion private and background-only in nature.

"We're supposed to be partners in this, but this is certainly going to make us think twice about trying to help them have as good a broadcast as possible," Tessalone said. "What he did was unconscionable."

AP: Birth-control patch label warns of clot risk

The risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs may be higher for women using the birth-control patch instead of the pill, according to a warning on the product's label disclosed Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration said it updated the label on the Ortho Evra birth-control patch to reflect the results of one study that found women using the patch faced twice the risk of clots than did women on the pill.

AP: At U.N., Chavez calls Bush 'the devil'

UNITED NATIONS - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took his verbal battle with the United States to the floor of the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, calling President Bush "the devil."

"The devil came here yesterday," Chavez said, referring to Bush's address Tuesday. "He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world."
The leftist leader, who has joined Iran in opposing U.S. influence, accused Washington of "domination, exploitation and pillage of peoples of the world."

"We appeal to the people of the United States and the world to halt this threat, which is like a sword hanging over our head," he said.

He also said the U.N. "doesn't work" in its current system and is "antidemocratic." He called for reform, saying the U.S. government's "immoral veto" had allowed recent Israeli bombings of Lebanon to continue unabated for more than a month.

"Venezuela once again proposes today that we reform the
United Nations," he said. He drew tentative giggles at times from the audience, but also some applause when called U.S. "imperialism" a menace.

Chavez lambasted Washington for trying to block Venezuela's campaign for a rotating seat on the U.N. Security Council. He said if chosen over U.S.-favorite Guatemala in a secret-ballot U.N. vote next month, Venezuela would be "the voice of the Third World."

The U.S. government warns that Chavez, a close ally of Iran, Syria and Cuba, would be a disruptive force on the council.

Victim of McCarthyism

The Wall Street Journal has just run a moving story about Arturo Sandoval, a distinguished musician and Cuban refugee who has been denied U.S. citizenship by the infamous Immigration and Naturalization Service. The reason? Mr. Sandoval is technically a Communist.

The author of the article calls this decision “a McCarthyite outrage,” because Mr. Sandoval, as a subject of Fidel Castro, had to join the Communist Party in order to get permission to travel abroad. But he hated Communism, and when he got the chance, he fled to this country — only to find his constrained membership in the party used against him.

I sympathize. I would have sympathized anyway, but I have special reason to sympathize. For last month, after having been vociferously anti-Communist all my life, I too became a victim of McCarthyism.

In a review of my new book about who wrote the plays and poems traditionally ascribed to Shakespeare, Professor Paul Cantor of the University of Virginia accuses me of holding “a Marxist view of literature.”

Marxist? Moi?

I trust that my faithful readers will realize that Professor Cantor, in his disagreement with my chief thesis, has gone a little overboard. I’ve been called many things, but never a Marxist.

As a matter of fact, anti-Communism was my first political passion. For most of my adult life I was a Cold Warrior. I’ve written countless columns and articles denouncing the Soviet Union and Red China.

But all for nought. The damage is done. My reputation has been blackened, my career blighted, my future darkened. From now on my name will be indelibly associated with the word Marxist. Old friends will drop me. My children will be shunned, my grandchildren shamed.

In short, it’s time to write my memoirs. That’s how we victims of McCarthyism have always made ends meet. When you’re exposed as a Communist, your next move, if you have any sense, is to exploit the opportunity by going to a big publisher and writing about how you’ve been persecuted for your ideas. You can hold out for a lot of money.

And don’t forget the movie rights! Hollywood loves stories about people who have been picked on just because their ideals led them to work secretly for Stalin. I want to be played by Robert De Niro or Robert Redford, with Vanessa Redgrave as my mother.

I never actually finished grad school (I just hung around for several years, like most grad students), but as a known Marxist I should be able to land a good job teaching in a major university. I can’t wait to see the look on Professor Cantor’s face when I turn up as his colleague in the English Department at the University of Virginia! I’ll be the darling of the faculty.

And then, woe to Professor Cantor! I’ll have him hounded out of the university for having led the witch-hunt that left me a broken man. And that’s not all he’s done. He also accuses me of holding “Romantic notions of poetry” and places me in “the camp of today’s multiculturalists.” I didn’t even realize you could hold Romantic and Marxist views at the same time.

But this man will stop at nothing. He says I believe that “authors are the captives of the class into which they are born, and their works are merely the ideological superstructure of their class interest.” Well, yes. Does anyone disagree with that? It’s just common sense. Marx said it, I believe it, that settles it.

My experience has given me a new sympathy not only for my fellow accused Marxists, but for the underdog, the minority, the dissenter, the Other — in short, for all who are oppressed or marginalized by bourgeois society. I try to keep my chin up, but it isn’t easy, as people like Mikhail Gorbachev, the Chinese leadership, the Clintons, and now Tony Blair co-opt the working classes and betray the revolution.

My only hope lies in the internal contradictions of capitalism. That, and the fact that progressive-minded people still control the universities. Plus, my agent thinks we can get a decent book and movie package.
