Massachusetts coffee shop closes after anti-police post - WCVB-TV
LYNN, Mass. — The owner of a Massachusetts coffee shop says she's closing her business because of the firestorm created when her daughter, the store's manager, made anti-police comments on Facebook.
Kato Mele, owner of the year-old White Rose Coffeehouse in Lynn, said she is closing "so I can stop being harassed."
You are absolutely correct, madam. Everyone also has the right to overreact and ruin your business. The point is this: People should not do either of these things.
Mele tried to make amends after her daughter, Sophie, wrote on her personal Facebook page last weekend that the business would never host a "Coffee with a Cop" event. During the ensuing back and forth, she called police bullies and racists.
Mele fired her daughter and wrote police an apology calling the remarks "distasteful, biased and hateful." She invited officers to the shop Monday for coffee.
"I don't agree with what she said. It is not my opinion. I should never have been linked to my business and that's where I parted ways with my daughter, in regards to the business," Mele said.
The police did not show, and the usual morning crowd never materialized either.
"This is a community that's on the rise," Mele said. "We were hoping to be a part of that. It's very sad for me knowing we're not going to be a part of that."
Bonny Eagle High School senior Wade Gelinas says he wanted his picture to feature hunting because it is a family tradition.
Principal Lori Napolitano tells WCSH-TV the school in Standish does not allow weapons in yearbook photos because administrators don’t want to be forced to decide which images are promoting violence and which aren’t.
Anyone with a brain and a modicum of sense can tell the difference, Principal Lori.
The photographer says she thought there was “no way” Gelinas would be allowed to use it.
Gelinas says he will submit a different photo but hopes the school will change its policy.
