Damon Wayans Jr.’s Independence Day tweet set off some fireworks online.

“Happy white people proud of their racist ancestors day,” the “Happy Endings” star wrote Tuesday afternoon.

In replies, Wayans said that his comment was a joke that “some took too personally.”

“Jokes aren’t illegal,” he wrote to one person who cited “another example of Hollywood talking down to Americans.”

Others blasted the 34-year-old actor for not appreciating his situation.

“Unbelievable. You just live in the best country in the world. You should thank God that you live in America,” someone wrote.

Wayans responded to several others, insisting his remark was a joke.

I'll bet he thinks he's not oppressing his Mexican gardener and pool guy.
