WGAL: FDA May OK Over-Counter Morning-After Pills

The government has agreed to take another look at whether to allow over-the-counter sales of the morning-after pill.

Almost a year after access to the emergency contraceptive was considered a no-go, the Food and Drug Administration has notified the maker of the Plan B pill that it wants to discuss marketing to women 18 and older.

Barr Laboratories has been fighting for three years to sell the pill without a prescription to at least some women.

The announcement comes just 24 hours before President George W. Bush's nominee to lead the FDA is scheduled to appear before a Senate committee -- and answer questions about why the morning-after pill had disappeared into bureaucratic limbo.
