It seems Pope Francis needs to brush up on his Tertullian!

It has been reported (in The ChristLast Media, I must note) that the current Pope does not like the phrase "lead us not into temptation...

"Let no freedom be allowed to novelty, because it is not fitting that any addition should be made to antiquity. Let not the clear faith and belief of our forefathers be fouled by any muddy admixture." -- Pope Sixtus III

Hero of the Day.

AP: NYC subway savior: Someone had to help
NEW YORK - Wesley Autrey said he made a quick decision to jump into a subway track to rescue a stranger from an ongoing train, an act he hopes other New Yorkers would follow.

"I did it out of a split-second reaction. And if I had to do it again, I probably would," he said on CBS' "The Early Show' Thursday. "I was like, 'Wow, I got to go get this guy ... somebody's gotta save this guy but I was the closest one.

"I'm still saying I'm not a hero ... 'cause I believe all New Yorkers should get into that type of mode," the 50-year-old construction worker said. "You should do the right thing."

Autrey's phone has been ringing off the hook since he helped the man on Tuesday by pushing him into a gap between the rails. Some callers were complete strangers so inspired by his bravery that they offered rewards.

Besides appearing on several morning television shows Thursday, he was set to tape an appearance on David Letterman's CBS "Late Show" and visit City Hall to be honored by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In hindsight, even Autrey was somewhat startled by his dramatic decision. But knowing he narrowly escaped injury or possibly death, he didn't regret his choice.

"I did something to save someone's life," he said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, while waiting for a downtown Manhattan train, Autrey saw Cameron Hollopeter, a 19-year-old film student, suffering from some kind of medical episode. After stumbling down the platform, Hollopeter, of Littleton, Mass., fell onto the tracks with a train on its way into the station.

Autrey, traveling with his two young daughters, knew he had to do something.

"If I let him stay there by himself, he's going to be dismembered," the Navy veteran remembered thinking.

Damn right he's a Vet!

He jumped down to the tracks, a few feet below platform level, and rolled with the young man into a drainage trough — cold, wet and more than a little unpleasant smelling — between the rails as the southbound No. 1 train came into the 137th Street/City College station.

The train's operator saw someone on the tracks and put the emergency brakes on. Some train cars passed over Autrey and Hollopeter with only a couple of inches to spare, but neither man suffered any harm from the incident.

Hollopeter was taken to a nearby hospital; Autrey refused medical attention — and then went to work.

Amen to that, Brother. That is what real men do.

Autrey went by the hospital Wednesday afternoon for a visit with Hollopeter and his family. Afterward, he and Hollopeter's father addressed reporters.

"Mr. Autrey's instinctive and unselfish act saved our son's life," Larry Hollopeter, his voice choking up, said Wednesday.

The Old Gray Whore: Construction Worker One Day, Subway Hero the Next

Wesley Autrey teetered back and forth on the edge of a subway platform yesterday, re-enacting how he dived onto the tracks of a southbound No. 1 train in Manhattan on Tuesday to save another man’s life.

A little boy with black hair and a bowl cut followed each of his moves. Other passers-by at the 137th Street station let loose the occasional hurrah or hand clap. Still others riffled through newspapers, which featured Mr. Autrey’s picture and headlines like “Subway Superman.”

A few subway stops away, at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center on 114th street near Amsterdam Avenue, Cameron Hollopeter underwent a second day of medical evaluation. Police said Mr. Hollopeter, a first-year film student at the New York Film Academy, had suffered a seizure, which sent him convulsing off the platform and onto the tracks, where Mr. Autrey held him down as the train rumbled just inches above them.

Moments after the train came to a halt, Mr. Autrey recounted yesterday, Mr. Hollopeter asked if he was dead. “I said, ‘You are very much alive, but if you move you’ll kill the both of us.’ ” Both men emerged from the episode with little more than bruises, but Mr. Autrey also emerged a star.

Mr. Autrey, a 50-year-old construction worker, said he knew something was different when he showed up for work later on Tuesday. His boss, he said, bought him lunch — a ham-and-cheese hero — and later told him to take yesterday off.

Then yesterday morning, as he walked to his mother’s apartment in Harlem, “a stranger came up and put $10 in my hand,” he said. “People in my neighborhood were like, ‘Yo, I know this guy.’ ”

Once at his mother’s apartment, he held interviews in the living room with some of the national morning news programs.

After that, it was back to the scene, where he recounted Mr. Hollopeter’s backward tumble off the platform and into the path of the oncoming train.

Throughout the day, Mr. Autrey’s sister, Linda, 48, played the role of administrative assistant, logging invitations for the talk-show circuit, including requests from the David Letterman, Charlie Rose and Ellen DeGeneres shows. Phone calls from well-wishers came pouring in, including one from the mayor’s office. Mr. Autrey said he had been offered cash, trips and scholarships for his two daughters, Syshe, 4, and Shuqui, 6, who watched as he dived to the trackbed.

“Donald Trump’s got a check waiting on me,” he said. “They offered to mail it; I said, ‘No, I’d like to meet the Donald, so I can say, Yo, you’re fired.’ ”

By the end of the day, the president of the New York Film Academy, Jerry Sherlock, had personally handed him a $5,000 check.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Autrey and Mr. Hollopeter met again. The meeting was closed to reporters, but afterward Mr. Autrey described how he stepped into Mr. Hollopeter’s hospital room, where they shared a few laughs as Mr. Hollopeter’s father stood by with tears in his eyes.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Mr. Autrey walked out of the hospital with Mr. Hollopeter’s father, Larry, and into a throng of more than 30 reporters and camera operators who jammed microphones into their faces.

“This is Cameron’s father,” Mr. Autrey began. “He’s a very, very, nice, nice man and, you know, I’m not used to this press,” he said, as reporters shouted at them to lean closer to the microphones and camera shutters popped like party favors.

Mr. Hollopeter was nervous, his hands shaking, as he read from handwritten notes.

“Mr. Autrey’s instinctive and unselfish act —— ” Mr. Hollopeter said, hesitating, as reporters inched closer. “There are no words to properly express our gratitude and feelings for his actions. Cameron is recovering and stable. Now he needs his rest, and our wishes are that you respect his privacy. May God’s blessings be with Mr. Autrey and his family.”

The teary father then slipped back into the hospital, apparently overcome with emotion.

You must be joking. "Apparently"? Only in the AmericaLast media...

“Me and the families are trying to make some plans so his family can meet my family and we can have a little gathering,” Mr. Autrey said, before breaking into a hearty laugh. “Without the media!”

Mr. Autrey was asked to reflect on the experience.

“Maybe I was in the right place at the right time, and good things happen for good people,” Mr. Autrey said.

Then he hopped into his brother-in-law’s tan Toyota Corolla. As the car pulled away, Mr. Autrey had some final words: “All New Yorkers! If you see somebody in distress, go for it!”

HOLY CRAP! A REAL MAN SNEAKED INTO THE UN?

International Herald Tribune: UN chief raises eyebrows by not repeating organization's opposition to death penalty

Instant translation: How dare he!

New York - The UN secretary general, Ban Ki Moon, ran into trouble on his first day of work Tuesday over Saddam Hussein's execution when he failed to state the United Nations' opposition to the death penalty and said capital punishment should be a decision of individual countries.

The UN has an official stance opposing capital punishment and Ban's predecessor, Kofi Annan, reiterated it frequently. The top UN envoy in Iraq, Ashraf Qazi, restated it again Saturday after the former Iraqi dictator was hanged.

Ban, however, took a different approach, never mentioning the UN ban on the death penalty in all its international tribunals, and the right to life enshrined in the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"Saddam Hussein was responsible for committing heinous crimes and unspeakable atrocities against Iraqi people and we should never forget victims of his crime," Ban said in response to a reporter's question about Saddam's execution Saturday for crimes against humanity. "The issue of capital punishment is for each and every member state to decide."

YIPPEE!

His ambiguous answer put a question mark over the UN's stance on the death penalty. It also gave the new chief an early taste of how every word can make a difference.

Michèle Montas, Ban's new spokeswoman, insisted that no change in UN policy was involved in what she described as Ban's "own nuance" on the death penalty.

Uh-oh. Mr. Ban is about to be "nuanced" by the UN's Thought Police.

"The UN policy still remains that the organization is not for capital punishment," she said. "However, the way the law is applied in different countries, he left it open to those different countries."

The death penalty is legal in Ban's homeland, South Korea, as it is in many other countries, including the United States, Russia, China and much of the Middle East.

Ban, who took over on New Year's Day from Annan, is the first Asian to serve as secretary general in 35 years. Tuesday was his first day of work at UN headquarters.

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy clemency hear and answer me. Amen.

St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse, pray for us.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me; Body of Christ, save me; Blood of Christ, inebriate me; Water from Christ's side, wash me; Passion of Christ, strengthen me; O good Jesus, hear me; Within Thy wounds hide me; Suffer me not to be separated from Thee; From the malicious enemy defend me; In the hour of my death call me; And bid me come unto Thee; That I may praise Thee with Thy saints and with Thy angels Forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer to St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire

Dear St. Anthony, you became a Franciscan with the hope of shedding your blood for Christ. In God's plan for you, your thirst for martyrdom was never to be satisfied. St. Anthony, Martyr of Desire, pray that I may become less afraid to stand up and be counted as a follower of the Lord Jesus. Intercede also for my other intentions. (Name them.)

Prayer To Saint Michael The Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the divine power, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Prayer to End Abortion

Lord God, I thank You today for the gift of my life, and for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part to end abortion. Today I commit myself never to be silent, never to be passive, and never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement, and never stop defending life until all my brothers and sisters are protected and our nation once again becomes a nation with liberty and justice, not just for some, but for all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer For Vocations

Send forth your Spirit, Lord, into the hearts of your faithful people, that we may be conscious of our vocation to holiness and sevice to others. Grant that many of us may dedicate ourselves to You through the priesthood and the religious life.We pray especially for the needs of our own parish and diocese. Grant that we may always have sufficient good and holy priests, and dedicated Sisters to serve our commumities. We pray, too, for religious orders; that generous men may join them to become zealous missionaries in preaching the Gospel in word and action, especially to the poor and abandoned. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Prayer Before The Crucifix

Behold, O kind and gentle Jesus, I kneel before Thee and pray that Thou would impress upon my heart the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, with true repentance for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment. At the same time, with sorrow I meditate on Thy five precious wounds, having in mind the words which David spoke in prophecy: "They have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones."

Almost Kansas City's Penguins Update.

The soon-to-be Kansas City Penguins are 17-15-6, good for 40 points. They are in fourth place in the Atlanic Division, 1 point behind the Islanders, 4 points behind the Rangers, and 8 points behind the first place Devils.

The Pens play the Sabres in Buffalo Friday night.

From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Pens start year in style
The Penguins couldn't have started 2007 off much better than they did Tuesday night in a near-perfect win over the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Lemieux in Kansas City today

Experts like offer to Penguins
A new Uptown arena could mean millions of dollars a year for the Penguins -- and might be enough to keep the team from leaving Pittsburgh.

Compared to a building as old as Mellon Arena, a new one with luxury suites, concessions and non-sporting events could bring in as much as an extra $20 million a year, said Andrew Zimbalist, a sports economist at Smith College in Massachusetts.

That's not all profit, but that money should go a long way toward covering the team's contribution for the building, experts said. Under the current 30-year offer, the team would have to pay $8.5 million up front and $2.9 million a year, while forgoing $1.16 million a year in naming rights.

"It's rare that another city can make that offer," said Darren Rouvelle, a CNBC sports business analyst. "Even with that up-front fee, that's still very much a sweetheart deal."

Team officials have agreed to sit down late Thursday afternoon with Gov. Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl to talk about how to pay for an arena. Team owners also plan to look at relocating.

Although the Penguins likely would have to help pay for an Uptown building, the team could make more money from an arena here, too. All of the revenue from a new Pittsburgh arena is available to "help keep the team viable," Onorato said recently.

"We're going to be able to put together a very competitive package because we have that flexibility," Onorato said. "We know there are a lot of revenues that are going to come out of a new building."

That could be a better offer than those of so-called "free arenas" in cities such as Kansas City or Portland.

Scheduled to open in September, Kansas City's Sprint Center does not have a main tenant, and is offering a guarantee that all luxury boxes will be sold through the first season for a National Hockey League franchise.

But the operator, AEG, a subsidiary of the Anschutz Company, invested $54 million toward the cost of the $276 million Sprint Center, allowing it to determine how much money would go to a main tenant.

"Revenues are certainly key to the sports franchise," said Neil Irwin, a sports analyst at Bryan Cave in Phoenix. "If they're not able to tap into other revenue sources, the sports side of it will usually not support itself."

Even without counting new revenues, the public seems to be making a fair offer to the Penguins, experts said. An average deal would require the team to put up 35 to 40 percent of the arena cost, Zimbalist said.

Under the latest offer, often called Plan B, the team would have to come up with 20 percent.

The state would pay $7 million a year from an economic development fund backed by gambling money, and Majestic Star Casino would pay $7.5 million a year from its profits at a new North Shore slot machine parlor. That would allow the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority to borrow $230 million toward the $290 million arena cost.

ACK!

"This is a better than average deal that the Penguins are being offered," Zimbalist said. "It's hard to imagine available cities out there that are better hockey cities than Pittsburgh. But I don't know what is the starting point for the Penguins."

Amen to that, Brother.

Both of Kansas City's hockey fans declined comment for this story.

Portland's hockey fan is vacationing in Hawaii.

The city offers the Penguins an established hockey market with a rich tradition and strong fan base. That can be a priceless commodity, especially in the National Hockey League.

"There is real concern when you have to start from zero season tickets," said Marc Ganis, president of Sportscorp Ltd. in Chicago. "Pittsburgh doesn't need to be dollar-to-dollar with the other markets."

Help paying for an arena?

As the Penguins prepare to negotiate terms for a new arena, the public is still paying for the old one. The Allegheny County Regional Asset District is obligated to make the following payments for debt and improvements at Mellon Arena:

Year -- Amount
2007 -- $1,000,000
2008 -- $1,000,000
2009 -- $1,000,000
2010 -- $965,000
2011 -- $925,000
2012 -- $893,000
2013 -- $849,000
2014 -- $817,000
2015 -- $788,000
2016 -- $741,000
2017 -- $991,000
2018 -- $685,000
Total $10,654,000

Double ack!

Washington's other newspaper offers more on the travails of Our Gal Hit, Senatrix Hitlery Schicklgruber (N-NY), as she struggles to seize total power.

Earlier this year, both the U.S. and Canadian press ran stories about Bill's periodic meetings with a Canadian auto-parts magnate turned politician, Belinda Stronach. Both have characterized themselves as just friends since they met in 2001 at a fundraiser. But tongues wagged nonetheless, because of the baggage.

Auto parts. Behold the genius of King Goober I! He can repair his AstroTurf-lined SodoMobile* for practically nil.

Folks around the Clintons believe -- or want to believe -- that Bill's indiscretions are a thing of the past, that he has faced his demons.

Since the Lewinsky scandal, Bill has received counseling for a sex addiction.

Senator Token Update.

From Washington's other newspaper comes the frightening news that I may have to change Senator Token's name to something much, much worse than Senator Big Ears.

Effect of Obama's Candor Remains to Be Seen : Senator Admitted Trying Cocaine in a Memoir...

Long before the national media spotlight began to shine on every twist and turn of his life's journey, Barack Obama had this to say about himself: "Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. . . . I got high [to] push questions of who I was out of my mind."

Senator Junkie? (It is his word, kiddies, not mine.) Senator Jug-Eared Junkie From Joliet? (So he's not from Joliet. Sue me.)

The Democratic senator from Illinois and likely presidential candidate offered the confession in a memoir written 11 years ago, not long after he graduated from law school and well before he contemplated life on the national stage. At the time, 20,000 copies were printed and the book seemed destined for the remainders stacks.

Today, Obama, 45, is near the top of polls on potential Democratic presidential contenders, and "Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance" has regularly been on the bestseller lists, with 800,000 copies in print. Taken along with his latest bestseller, "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream," Obama has become a genuine publishing phenomenon.

Obama's revelations were not an issue during his Senate campaign two years ago. But now his open narrative of early, bad choices, including drug use starting in high school and ending in college, as well as his tortured search for racial identity, are sure to receive new scrutiny.

Ah...racial identity. I'll bet he settled on the "identity" he thought would best serve his ambition.

As a potential candidate, Obama has presented himself as a fresh voice offering a politics of hope. Many say he offers something new in American politics: an African American with a less-than-traditional name who has so far demonstrated broad appeal.
What remains to be seen is whether the candor he offered in his early memoir will be greeted with a new-style acceptance by voters.

It was not so long ago that such blunt admissions would have led to a candidate's undoing, and there is uneasiness in Democratic circles that "Dreams From My Father" will provide a blueprint for negative attacks.

Two decades ago, Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit was forced to withdraw as a nominee for the Supreme Court after reports surfaced that he had used marijuana while he was a law professor. As a presidential candidate, Bill Clinton thought marijuana use could be enough of a liability in 1992 that he felt compelled to say he had not inhaled. And President Bush has managed to deflect endless gossip about his past by acknowledging that he had an "irresponsible" youth but offering no details.

Through his book, Obama has become the first potential presidential contender to admit trying cocaine.

Senator Blow? He is probably too bourgeois for Senator Crack...

"I believe what the country is looking for is someone who is open, honest and candid about themselves rather than someone who seems endlessly driven by polls or focus groups," said Robert Gibbs, Obama's spokesman. Gibbs said yesterday that Obama was not available for an interview.

Presidential aspirants tend to write more sanitized books for use as campaign tools. "Faith of My Fathers" by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) depicts his family's history of military service. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has reissued "It Takes a Village," which offers her views about child-rearing in contemporary society. In fact, Obama's latest book, "Audacity of Hope," lays out his policy positions.

But "Dreams From My Father" is not like that. Obama wrote the highly personal book when he was in his early 30s, after being approached by a publisher when he became the first black person elected editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Who writes a memoir in his early thirties?

"This is not the kind of book you would ever expect a politician to write," said GOP consultant Alex Vogel. "Anyone who has a career in politics has to be concerned with what's in their past, but there is no question that Americans have an appetite for redemption."

In fact, Bush himself has been a beneficiary of those sympathies. He has suffered little criticism from his conservative base after acknowledging that he drank too much in the past and is now a teetotaler.

Obama's partisan opponents and experts said it is too early to know whether the admissions will be a liability because the public seems to be enthusiastically embracing his openness at this point. What's more, they note that it is better for a politician to disclose his own transgressions, rather than be put on the defensive by revelations.

A senior Republican strategist who will be advising a GOP presidential candidate in 2008 said he did not see anything in the book that would be a "disqualifier," but he cautioned that Obama has not yet gone through an intense vetting process and that a problem could arise if there is more to his story than he has chosen to share. The strategist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also suggested that there will be high tolerance for marijuana use among voters because many baby boomers probably tried the drug in the '60s.

"Who's going to cast that first stone?" asked Anita Dunn, a veteran Democratic political consultant, who has advised Obama's political committee.

Rhodes Cook, a independent political analyst, said that Democratic primary voters, who are typically more liberal, would be more understanding of his drug use -- "and if he makes it to a general election, it will be old news."

Obama's supporters said his admissions in the book could work to his advantage.

"I think it will be received as refreshing," said Sen. Richard J. Durbin, Obama's fellow Democrat from Illinois. "If you compare similar books, many of us in the political business tend to have selective memories."

Says the CINO Senator Dick.

Obama writes extensively about his struggle to come to terms with being a black man whose African father returned to Kenya when he was 2, leaving him to be raised by his white Kansas-born mother and grandparents in Hawaii. He describes an identity crisis arising from his realization that his life was shaped by both a loving white family and a world that saw in him the negative stereotypes frequently ascribed to young black men. He recounts a search of self that took him from high school in Hawaii to Columbia University, and then to the streets of Chicago as a community organizer.

"We were always playing on the white man's court . . . by the white man's rules," he writes. "If the principal, or the coach, or a teacher . . . wanted to spit in your face, he could, because he had the power and you didn't. . . . The only thing you could choose was withdrawal into a smaller and smaller coil of rage.

Golly, I wonder if ol' Barack O'Chronic names all the evil Caucasoid authority figures who personally spit in his face when he was a boy...Those racist devils should be exposed, humiliated, and fired from whatever jobs they now hold! He should file federal suits against them for millions. They obviously violated his civil rights.

Of course, Whitey is almost always more clever than that. They probably spit in his face metaphorically.

"And the final irony: should you refuse this defeat and lash out at your captors . . . they would have a name for that too. Paranoid. Militant."

Obama has not expressed any regrets for his candor. In a preface to the new edition, he says that he would tell the same story today "even if certain passages have proven to be inconvenient politically."

In the book, Obama acknowledges that he used cocaine as a high school student but rejected heroin. "Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though," he says.

Whew! He has saved us the horror of seeing him roll up his sleeves during a nationally televised debate to prove he has no needle tracks on his arms.

Hmmm...What about the backs of his knees?

In an interview during his Senate race two years ago, Obama said he admitted using drugs because he thought it was important for "young people who are already in circumstances that are far more difficult than mine to know that you can make mistakes and still recover.

That is precisely the point, you yahoo. You have not recovered. You are a left-fascist totalitarian thug who is unqualified for the post of alderman. (Sorry. It is probably "alderthing" by now.)

"I think that, at this stage, my life is an open book, literally and figuratively," he said. "Voters can make a judgment as to whether dumb things that I did when I was a teenager are relevant to the work that I've done since that time."

No, not literally, you lamebrain.

The Rule of Law takes hold in Iraq.

Fitting, no?

AP: Iraqi official arrested for Saddam hanging video
Baghdad - The person believed to have recorded Saddam Hussein's execution on a cell phone camera was arrested Wednesday, an adviser to Iraq's prime minister said.

The adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, did not identify the person. But he said it was "an official who supervised the execution" and who is "now under investigation."

"In the past few hours, the government has arrested the person who made the video of Saddam's execution," the adviser said.

Iraqi state television broadcast an official video of Saturday's hanging, which had no audio and never showed Saddam's actual death. But the leaked cell phone video showed the deposed leader being taunted in his final moments, with witnesses shouting "Go to hell!" before he dropped through the gallows floor and died.

A miracle of the season!

Thanks to the El Nino currents, Al Gorehound, Bush's Magical Mystical Meteorological Machine, blind stupid luck, or his shrew of a wife, the guy down the street removed almost all of his Halloween decorations last weekend! (One large black spider and web still grace his front yard as of this morning.) This is a full six weeks earlier than last year! Congrats are due all around.

The Rational Response Squad and Beyond Belief Media challenge you to commit the unforgivable sin.

The Rational Response Squad is giving away 1001 DVDs of The God Who Wasn't There, the hit documentary that the Los Angeles Times calls "provocative -- to put it mildly."

There's only one catch: We want your soul.

It's simple. You record a short message damning yourself to Hell, you upload it to YouTube, and then the Rational Response Squad will send you a free The God Who Wasn't There DVD. It's that easy.

INSTRUCTIONS:
You may damn yourself to Hell however you would like, but somewhere in your video you must say this phrase: "I deny the Holy Spirit."

Why? Because, according to Mark 3:29 in the Holy Bible, "Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." Jesus will forgive you for just about anything, but he won't forgive you for denying the existence of the Holy Spirit. Ever. This is a one-way road you're taking here.

Terror's Surprise Loss
by Ralph Peters of The New York Post (Thanks to Laura Ingraham for the heads up.)

The new year is off to a bad start for Muslim extremists and their admirers in the media: After only a few months in power, the Islamist regime in Mogadishu collapsed overnight as Ethiopian troops drove out the fanatics. The global media line held that the Islamic Courts Council, which seized power last year and immediately imposed Sharia law, was in firm control of the country, with the legal government in Baidoa destined to fall. And Somalia did become the new Terror Central, a safe haven for al Qaeda and a strategic base for Islamist subversion in Africa. Then Ethiopia stepped in and spoiled the goat roast.

STEELERS' COACH RETIRES!

That's right. Longtime running backs' coach Dick Hoak is retiring.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
ABOVE: Dick Hoak runs over the Browns in his days as a Steeler player.
Brown: Steelers' Hoak to retire today
A Steelers coach will hold a news conference today to talk about his retirement.

Not that coach, but one who has been with the organization since the 1960s and became an anomaly in the itinerant world of assistant coaches.

Dick Hoak will leave the Steelers after 45 years of distinguished service with the team, including the last 35 as an offensive backfield or running backs coach.

Thanks, Coach.

He is the only assistant coach to serve under Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher, who also is contemplating retirement.

Hoak, who turned 67 in December, was the longest-tenured assistant coach in the NFL.

Hoak grew up in Jeannette, starred at Penn State from 1958-60 and did well enough during a 10-year playing career with the Steelers that he still ranks fifth on the franchise's all-time rushing list (3,965 yards).

A seventh-round draft choice in 1961, Hoak led the Steelers in rushing three times and made the Pro Bowl once.

During Hoak's early years as an assistant, Franco Harris became one of the top running backs in the NFL and helped the Steelers win four Super Bowls in the 1970s.

Jerome Bettis later rejuvenated his career in Pittsburgh and will likely join Harris one day in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Willie Parker, the Pro Bowler and team MVP, may be the unlikeliest of Steelers success stories.

The undrafted free agent just completed a season in which he rushed for 1,494 yards and set a Steelers single-season record for touchdowns (16).

Hoak coached just one season of high school football before Noll hired him in 1972. Cowher made the Greensburg resident the only coach from Noll's staff that he retained when he took over in 1992.

From '92-2005, the Steelers' 30,311 rushing yards ranked first in the NFL. (Thanks to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for the heads up.)

The Washington Times: China reportedly arrests 9 Catholic priests
Rome - Nine priests of China's underground Roman Catholic Church have been arrested in Heibei, a northern province, the Catholic press agency AsiaNews reported on Friday.

That would be the real Catholic Church, forced underground by the commie thugs who like to pretend to be reformers.

Yesterday in Beijing, however, a senior official in China's state-sanctioned Catholic church denied that his association was cracking down on churches loyal to the Vatican. AsiaNews, a missionary news service close to the Vatican, had said nine priests from the underground Catholic church in Heibei province were arrested by police Wednesday as they gathered near the city of Baoding to pray.

The AsiaNews report called the reputed arrests part of a campaign by the government-backed Catholic Patriotic Association to subdue the underground church in Heibei, a stronghold of Catholic sentiment in northern China. AsiaNews said the province has an estimated 1.5 million Catholics, most belonging to the unofficial church.

Liu Bainian, vice chairman of the Catholic Patriotic Association, said he had heard of no such arrests and denied there was a campaign under way to crush the church, which is loyal to the pope.

AsiaNews, a Rome-based agency with Vatican connections, said the motive for the reputed arrests was not known, "but it's probable they were arrested just because they met over the Christmas period for a prayer session in a place that has not been recognized by the government."

There are as many as 15 million Catholics in China, divided into the "official" church, which appoints its bishops under Chinese government control, and the underground church that maintains links with the Vatican.

The official church claims about 5 million adherents, and the clandestine church as many as 10 million. AsiaNews has reported that at least six bishops of the underground church had either disappeared or been detained in Heibei province.

May God have mercy on their brave souls.

New strains in relations between China and the Vatican appeared last month after Chinese government authorities approved the ordination of a new priest without the pope's approval.

The ordination last spring of three new Chinese bishops without Vatican approval led Pope Benedict XVI to denounce what he called a serious violation of religious freedoms. The strains occur despite ongoing discussions between Beijing and the Vatican on normalizing their relations, broken off in the 1950s after China's Communists took power.

Pray for all the Catholics of China, kiddies - those brave enough to remain faithful to The One, True Church as well as those who risk their immortal souls by worshipping the false god of The State.

Totalitarian Pennsylvania Update.

***** UPDATE *****

Ack! Term limits! Now!

Harrisburg Patriot-News: State House elects Philly Republican as speaker
It was an interesting afternoon on the House floor to say the least. But when the dust cleared, Philadelphia Republican Dennis M. O’Brien was elected House speaker.

O'Brien was elected speaker with 105 votes. He defeated outgoing Speaker John Perzel, who garnered 97 votes.

It is speculated that O'Brien will switch parties, but that has not been confirmed.

See what I mean? There is no difference. They are interchangeable.

Democrat Bill DeWeese, who this morning was still hoping to become speaker, made the surprise motion to make O’Brien speaker. "We live in interesting times," said DeWeese.

Rep. Rick Geist, R-Blair, nominated Perzel to continue in the speaker's post. "He knows how to do this job. He knows how to manage this house," said Geist.

"The day is full of surprises, obviously," noted Rep. Katie True, R-Lancaster, who seconded the nomination of Perzel.

The Gavel reports that Democratic Rep. Tom Caltagirone, D-Berks, who threw the leadership election into doubt when he announced he would support Perzel for speaker, has been spotted in the House chamber ... sitting with Republicans.

Rep. Jesse Stairs, R-Fayette, nominated Democrat Tom Tangretti of Greensburg to be speaker. Tangretti declined the nomiation.

Rep. Ron Marsico, R-Lower Paxton Twp., bemoaning the lack of midstate representation in the leadership, later nominated Rep. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, who also declined the nomination.

***** UPDATE *****

From The Not A Dime's Bit Of Difference Between 'Em Department:

John "Captain Pay Hike" Perzel may have found a way to hold on to his precious power.

The good news? The Democrasses are really pissed off.

Harrisburg Patriot-News: Democrat offers vote to Perzel for House Speaker

House Democrats might lose much of their majority clout before having a chance to wield it when the General Assembly reconvenes today for its 2007-08 session.

With Rep. Thomas Caltagirone, D-Berks, planning to support Rep. John Perzel, R-Philadelphia, as speaker of the house, Republicans have a chance to elect a speaker from the minority caucus for the first time in more than a century.

Coming days after the final certification of vote totals ensuring a 102-101 Democratic House majority, Caltagirone's move -- the result of a bitter relationship between he and Democratic speaker-nominee H. William DeWeese, D-Greene -- has left the vote in a state of flux.

Perzel, an old-guard legislative leader who recast himself as a reformer, made part of his pitch this winter to dissident Democrats like Caltagirone a power-sharing plan in which each party would get chairmanships of 11 of the House's standing committees. Committee rosters would include 12 members from each party, as opposed to the 14-10 majority/minority split now in place.

Other reforms proposed by the GOP leadership would require all bills to be in final form for at least one day before final votes on the floor and a 10 p.m. cutoff for floor sessions.

"The people said they wanted to see major change, and we're going to give them major change," Perzel said last night.

Ha!

Attempts to reach DeWeese and Gov. Edward G. Rendell yesterday were unsuccessful.

While Caltagirone's support gives him the upper hand, Perzel's re-election as speaker was not certain because of the prospect that reform-minded lawmakers from both parties might vote for a third candidate.

"We're certainly having discussions about a lot of options, and that is one of the options," said Rep. Dave Steil, R-Bucks, and a leader of the Jefferson Reform Initiative. "I'm making no commitment [to any candidate] at this time."

A third candidate nominated from the floor could pull enough votes to prevent Perzel or DeWeese from getting the majority needed to become speaker.

That might be a good idea.

Some members of the midstate's mostly Republican House delegation said they could take a wait-and-see approach, but it was also clear that none was considering a defection to DeWeese.
"If it's two candidates, I'm going to vote for John Perzel," said Rep. Jerry Nailor, R-Mechanicsburg. "If there's a third candidate, then I haven't committed myself. ... I'd have to see who that is and give them consideration."

Incoming Rep. Susan Helm, R-Susquehanna Twp., called Perzel "a proven leader" last week, adding, "Obviously, last year was not a good year for him. Some things happened that I truly believed he's learned from and ... he's trying to make improvements."

Ha!

Credibility with members is a large part of the problem facing DeWeese. One factor that moved Caltagirone to make his jump, sources say, was his belief DeWeese reneged on a promise to support him for a caucus leadership post in the fall.

"I don't always agree with leadership," said Rep. Christopher Sainato, D-Lawrence, "but we now have the opportunity to show the people of Pennsylvania that we can lead. You can't let petty differences that may have happened over the years step in the way."

Some Democrats see Caltagirone as the double-crosser.

State Democratic Party chair T.J. Rooney led a demonstration of about 50 people at Caltagirone's district office in Reading yesterday, where he called for Caltagirone to support DeWeese or resign and run for re-election as a Republican in a special election.

"Caltagirone's act only empowers an ... ineffective Republican Party that suffered enormous losses on Election Day by the will of the voters," Rooney said. "If he feels so strongly about providing Perzel and the Republicans this holiday gift, he should join their ranks and stop pretending that he's a Democrat."

You don't get it, Citizen Rooney...NO MATTER WHO YOU VOTE FOR, THE POLITICIANS GET IN!

The opening of the state Senate is expected to have no such intrigue. Republicans hold a solid 29-21 majority in that chamber.

My photo
First of all, the word is SEX, not GENDER. If you are ever tempted to use the word GENDER, don't. The word is SEX! SEX! SEX! SEX! For example: "My sex is male." is correct. "My gender is male." means nothing. Look it up. What kind of sick neo-Puritan nonsense is this? Idiot left-fascists, get your blood-soaked paws off the English language. Hence I am choosing "male" under protest.
