Did you ever wonder why pilots make good money?

A JetBlue airliner with a landing gear problem has landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport.

The A-320 Airbus, with 139 passengers and crew, had circled for about two hours to burn off fuel.

The FAA says Jet Blue Flight 292 took off from nearby Burbank at mid-afternoon, bound for JFK in New York City. The mechanical problem was quickly noticed and the plane was quickly redirected toward Long Beach, which has a longer runway. It was later diverted again, this time to LAX.

TV pictures showed the extended nose wheel at a right angle to normal. Other wheels extended normally.

The plane balanced on its back wheels as it slowed on the runway at LAX. When the front landing gear touched down it created sparks and then flames, which went out as the aircraft eventually stopped.

Firefighters were standing by. Passengers left the plane on steps brought out on the tarmac. (Thanks to WTSP in Tampa for the heads up.)
