WIS News 10: Carolina-Clemson game turns deadly over $20 bet

Lexington - A Lexington County man is in jail charged with murdering his friend.

Authorities say the killing was the result a Carolina-Clemson football rivalry taken too far - a $20 bet turned into a murder charge. The rivalry runs deep, and on Saturday, it turned deadly.

Officials say it all started when two friends in Lexington bet each other $20 on the USC-Clemson game.

43-year-old Richard Johnson died instantly.

His friend, 42-year-old James Quick, is charged with murder.

Officials believe quick shot Johnson because Johnson wouldn't pay up after losing the bet.

"We've had arguments and we've had shootings, but for someone to actually kill somebody over a bet, his is the first time to my memory we've had something like this," said Sheriff Metts.
