The Michael and Cathryn Borden Memorial Book of the Day.*

I cannot recommend this one highly enough.

Red Star Rogue : The Untold Story of a Soviet Submarine's Nuclear Strike Attempt on the U.S.

Remember the Glomar Explorer, kiddies? It was the Howard Hughes ship financed by the CIA to recover a sunken Soviet sub.

It seems the sub in question was taken over by KGB thugs under the control of Yuri Andropov (The noted lover of jazz) and then attempted to fire a ballistic nuclear missle at Pearl Harbor on March 7, 1968. It was only destroyed when a failsafe system the bad guys had thought they had circumvented blew them all to Hell.

BTW, it turns out the failsafe was given to the USSR by LBJ and the CIA actually recovered almost all of the sub, despite the cover story of the Glomar's failure.

The truth is stranger than fiction.
