On this date in 1941 the US Pacific Fleet was attacked by forces of the Empire of Japan at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
You can tell this was a much simpler time in our history because we utterly defeated the Japanese and their German and Italian allies, then we rebuilt their devastated nations while establishing freedom and the rule of law in each. There was barely a peep of opposition, and that was all-American democratic (note the small "d") opposition. (Except of course for the commies who only came around when Hitler attacked his treaty partner, Stalin.)
