If this National Assembly does not have the mindset required to produce a meaningful Iraqi constitution, then it is best to dissolve and re-elect the assembly than settle for a prop. It is more important to get it right, than to get it “right now.”

As Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari noted, “We should not be hasty regarding the issues and the constitution should not be born crippled.” The constitution must be meaningful – a living, breathing document that can be a foundation for the long road towards a real democracy in a united Iraq.

Thanks for your comments.

Your point is well taken.

On the other hand, there is something to be said for holding the politicians' to the deadline. Even if members of the Iraqi assembly are not professional pols yet, they soon will be. (Sadly, that is the nature of man when infected with power.)

They will talk the thing to death while the country disintegrates around them. The Iraqi people need the rule of law as soon as possible. For the time being, this law must be enforced by the military. Only the practice of freedom by all Iraqis will equip them to live in a country where no man is above the law.

It is best for them (and us) if they start as soon as possible.

Links to MPH's blogs, Disaffiliates - Think Twice and Michael Hussey Blog will be added to my list, although he does have a link to some of that Ayn Rand nonsense that always gives me the heebie-jeebies.
